Patented June 7, 1932 GUSTAV WOLF, OF GUTERSLOH, GERMANY APPARATUS FOR MANUFACTUR Application filed November This invention relates to an apparatus for reducing the twist tensions of wire ropes and strands, according to which the finished rope or strand'is bent repeatedly in different planes 6 radial to its axis. There are twist-removing devices known which bend the finished ropes and strands in one plane by means of a set of rollers, but they are unable to bring about the removal of twist in a direct manner. It
10 has further been proposed to remove tension by simultaneously'bending, during the-passage of the rope, two neighboring parts thereof in opposite directions on circulating paths so that the points of application of the bending forces travel in a helical line about the rope and each portion of the rope and strand is bent only in two different directions.
Similar defects are found in a known device whose bending rolls, though arranged in tandem order, have equi-directional axes of rotation and move transversely to the longitudinal axis of the rope. The bending rolls will thus be applied to only one point of the rope ata time, which may easily cause a loosening of the rope layers. Furthermore, it is disadvantageous to mechanically cause the bending rolls to rotate in circular fashion.
The drawbacks mentioned are eliminated by the twist removing device according to the invention by arranging several three-roller sets one behind the other, the axes of rotation of which intersect each other. As the bendin rolls rotate in the direction of the longitu inal axis of the rope, the laying of the latter is not destroyed and the bending of the rope can be carried out at any twisting de-' ree. a Roller devices of a similar type are known per se, but they serve for straightening rods and the like with solid structure and differ fundamentallyfrom the object of the present invention in so far as they are unable to carry out a bending action in order to remove the twist from ropes and the like, although they are capable of bending rods into the straight longitudinal axis, it being the characteristic requirement of twist-removal by bending to extend the bending of the rope material beyond the latters longitudinal axis and elastic limit. The invention may evidently be realized also with other rolling devices, for instance by making the sets of rolls intersect one another not regularly successively but by carrying out the repeated bending with several sets of rolls first in one plane and then in a similar manner in another plane. The bending may be done in less or more than four planes. The form of construction which will be hereinafter described has been found to be the most practical. It is also not necessary, to arrange the twist-removing device directly in the rope-forming machine.

For removing of the twists preferably sets of bending rolls e, e, f, f, P, g, g, 9 and 71 h, It? of known type are provided and arranged the one behind the other behind the grooved rolls 6 and 0, the axle bearings of the rolls of said sets being successively situated in different radial planes.
In the embodiment illustrated the roll sets for each rope bending are arranged behind and transversely to one another in their axial directions, so that the bending of the strand or rope s is possible in difi'erent radial directions. The degree of bending of the strand or of the rope and the number of bendings are selected, so that by the frequent bendings the natural tension ofthe material and consequently the twist is suppressed.
Herefrom follows that the degree of bending of the strand or of the rope must be greater than the twisting degree of the wires in the strand or in the rope.
After the twist-removing the strand or the rope .9 must be straightened again by means of two pairs of rolls '5, arranged in a known manner transversely to one another and which might be also grooved.
The calibrating, untwistingand straightening-devices are preferably mounted in a common frame (Figs. 3 and 4) the rolls 1' being, if necessary, rotatable in ball bearings and guided in adjustin blocks m. Screw spindles n serve for a justing and securing the adjustable blocks.
What I claim, is:
Apparatus for reducing the twist tension of wire ropes and strands by bending as described,comprising a plurality of roller sets disposed one behind the other in zigzag order and adapted to bend the wire and strands beyond their longitudinal axis and in different planes radial to their axis, the individual rolls rotating in the longitudinal direction of the rope and strands.
