TILE FLOOR lOOV'ERINGr Application filed September This invention relates to improvements in linoleum or like tile construction for fioor coverings or similar purposes.
An object of the invention is the provision 5 oi` a novel construction which is of light durable material adapted to be constructed in sections or unit-s for removal or replacement of a section in the linoleum or like tile floor` A. ing.
o Another object is the provision of a unit including linoleum or like tile and light metal such as aluminum securely bonded together as a unit.
.W A further object is to provide such a unit 3 which will have resilient or cushioning properties and is provided with a removable bottom for ease of assembly, which when in in terlocking position will securely bind the whole together.
Other objects will appear hereinafter from the accompanying description and claims which set forth and particularly point out the features, combination, and arrangement of parts constituting the invention.
The drawing is illustrative of my invention. in which,
Figure 1 is an enlarged sectional view showing one tile portion of a unit of linoleum or similar tile floor covering, which unit is shown in plan in Figure 2 as comprising six such tile portions or sections.
Figure 3 is a view of the bottom plate provided with slotted openings for interlocking engagement with the projecting heads of fasteners secured to the body of the unit.
Figure 4 is a sectional elevation of the tile floor covering units applied to the floor and a. molding strip adapted to cooperate with the floor covering units by occupying the space between them and the wall and having a part overlying the said units.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the frame or body of a unit of my improved floor covering, which together with other and similar units placed in juxtaposition with each other constitutes a floor covering in which the units are removable and replaceable.
The unit 1 of aluminum or other soft metal, in the embodiment shown, is provided with six recesses 2 in its upper face forming up- 9, 1930. Serial No. 480,790.
standing wall portions 3. The invention is not limited to any particular size of unit'containing any particular number of recesses. ln the embodiment shown in Figure 1v the recesses may be about one foot square and the unit about three feet square.
The recesses or dished openings 2 extend but part way of the depth of the metal frame or unit, and the bottom 4 of the frame or body 1 is provided with an opening 5 therethrough.
A tile member 6 which maybe of linoleum, cork or rubber compound or composition is inserted in each of the recesses 2' and-cemented therein at 13. The tile member is preferably somewhat resilient while presenting a hard wearing surface. The body or unit 1 is then inverted and a filler 7 vof asbestos composition or other soft and resilient material, is pressed into the opening 5in the bottom 4 offthefbody,
and bonded or cemented firmly to said tile i member 6 at 14.
A base plate 8 of aluminum or other soft light metal is then applied to covery the lbottom 4 of the body and'to overlie the plugged or filled opening and to be securely though detachably connected to said asbestos plug or filler and to the bottom of said unit, to bind the whole firmly together:
T he insert or plug 7 of'resilient asbestos serves as a connecting means between said base plate and tile member so that these members are firmly secured togetherin interlocking relation with the recessed unit. The resilient insert 7 also serves as a cushioning means between the tile member and the base plate and being disposed substantiallyY centrally beneath the tile member makes the floor covering resilient and desirable to walk upon.
Screws 9, or similar headed fastening means are fastened to the bottom 4v of the unit and to the plug 7 withthe heads 1() projecting therefrom.
Slots or openings having a wide portion 1l to receive the heads and a narrow portion 12 to embrace the shank of the screws beneath the heads, are provided in the base plate 8 as shown in Figure 3.
The base plate is appliedwith the openings 11 receiving the heads of the fasteners CTI and is then moved to embrace the heads and to clamp the whole construction firmly together.
In place of screws other forms of projecting headed fastening means may be used such as nails or bolts or rivets extending entirely through the filler 7 and firmly secured thereto.
In Figure 4 is shown a molding having a base 15 adapted to space the edge of the unit 1 from the wall 16 of the room, and having a flange 17 overlying the unit, and having an opening 18 for receiving fastening means 19' which secures the molding to the .wall 16. The unit 1 and molding 15 are shown resting upon Hoor 20.
I claim: Y
.1. In combination in a linoleum or like tile construction, a unit having a recess and an opening in its bottom, a filler in the recess and a filler in the opening bonded t0- gether, and a base plate secured to the bottom of said unit and covering the said filler in the opening.
2. In combination in a tile unit, a body having a recess in its upper portion and an opening in its bottom communicating with said recess, a tile member in thevrecess and a resilient filler in the opening bonded to the tile member, and a base plate secured to the bottom of said unit and covering and secured to the filler in the opening.
3. A. tile unit according to claim 2 in which headed fastening means are secured to the bottom of said .unit and to the filler in the opening with the heads projecting therefrom, openings in said base plate having an enlarged portion to receive said heads and a narrow portion joining the enlarged portion whereby the base plate is applied over said heads and moved to locking position embracing said heads.
4. In combination in a tile unit, a body of soft metal having a recess in its top and an opening in its bottom communicating with the recess, a tile in said recess, and a filler of soft Aresilient asbestos composition in said opening, said tile and ller being bonded together by means of a cement, said tile being secured in said recess by cement, headed fastening means secured in the bottom of said body and in the asbestos filler with the heads projecting downwardly therefrom, and a base plate having openings therein of varying width adapted for interlocking engagement with said heads to securely clamp itself and the tile and asbestos fillers to the body.
5. In combination in a tile unit, a body member having a recess in its upper side, and an opening extending through its bottom portion and communicating with said recess, resilient material in the recess, resilient material in the bottom opening, united with the material in the recess and a base plate eX- tending over the opening, and covering the bottom of the body member, and means for securing the said plate to the body member, and to the resilient insert in the bottom opening, substantially as described.
