IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR SHAVING SHINGLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,188, dated January 9, 1877 application filed November 11, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSHUA R. KIDDER, of Albion, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Shaving Shingles and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine for shaving shingles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a hori zoutal section on line a 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on line 3/ y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of table E. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of knife and gage, and Figs. 6 and 7 are sectional details of table E.

A represents a suitable frame-work, in the center of which. is vertical roller B, provided with a sweep, O, for the attachment of a horse for rotating the roller. Through the roller B, at a suitable point, is passed a horizontal beam, D, on the under side of which, at each end, is attached a knife, a. In front of this knife is a yielding gage, b, cdlilnected to arms 01 d, projecting from the beam D. E is the worktable, secured in the frame A, and provided in its upper surface with two inclined recesses, e 0. At the shallow end of each recess are teeth f, projecting up through the table, and attached to a spring-bar, G, underneath. For each spring-bar G there is a shoe, H, in a mortise in the table, and connected by a pin, 5, with the spring-bar.

For operation, the machine is staked to suitable logs, and the horse hitched to the sweep O and started around. One shingle is then placed in the first sink or recess e at the left hand. As the knive a passes over this shingle it shaves one side thereof. This shingle is then turned over and placed in the righthand sink, and another in the left hand, and the knife passes over them both, and shaves the left-hand shingle and finishes the righthand shingle. In the right-hand sink or recess e is a pin, h, attached to a spring-bar, I, to throw the shingle out of the recess, the bar being operated by a shoe, J, when the beam D passes over the shoe and presses the same down.

The shingles are held in the sinks by the teeth f, which are pressed down by the beam passing over the shoes H. After the shingles are shaved by this machine they are edged by an ordinary edger.

By the use of my machine the shingles will be all of uniform size.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The yielding gages b b, arranged in front of the knives a a, in combination with roller B and beam D, as herein set forth.

2. The combination of the table E, having sinks or recesses e e, the stopsff, spring-bars G G, and shoes H H, as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The pin h, spring-bar I, and shoe J, arranged in the table E, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
