BATTERY TERMINAL CONNECTER Filed Sept. 50, 1929 I N V EN TOR A TTORNE Y.
Patented May 31, 1932 UNITED STATES WILL J. AGNEW, OF WALKER, IOWA BATTERY TERLHNAL CONNECTER Application filed September 30, 1929. Serial No; 396,263.
This invention relates to a battery termi nal connecter and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of the class referred to for insuring a l firm contact with respect to the battery terminal and for reducing to a minmium the possibility of the connecter becoming loose with respect to the terminal and further to set up a battery terminal connection which can be 19 more readily or easily manufactured than the present type of battery terminal connection now generally used.
Further objects of the invention are to pro.- vide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a
' battery terminal connecter which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efiicient in its use, readily installed with respect to the terminal, establishing a firm contact with the .9 terminal, quickly assembled and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
lNith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can -9 be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in top plan of a battery showing the adaptation with the terminal thereof of a connecter in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the con- 19 necter disassembled.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of a battery showing the adaptation with the terminal thereof of a modified form of connecter in accordance with this invention.
. 9 of a battery showingthe adaptation with the terminal thereof of still another modified form of connecter in accordance with this invention.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of one of the elements of the form of connecter shown in Figure 5.
Referring to Figure 1, 7 indicates a bat tery and 8 a terminal thereof. The upper portion of the terminal 8 is reduced diametrically to provide a vertically disposed eXten- 00 slon 9 having plane sides each extending throughout in a like plane and with the planes of the sides of the extension 9 disposed in parallelism. The providing of the terminal 8 with the extension 9 forms theterminal with a pair of oppositely extending shoulders 10, 11. The body portion of the terminal 8 is of circular cross section. The top edge of the extension 9 is rounded. The extension 9 is flat and of uniform width in cross section.
Referring to Figure 3 of the drawings 12 indicates a battery and 13- a terminal thereof and the latter is provided with a tapered upper portion 14. The taper on each side of the terminal 13 is slightly curved as indicated at 15, Figure 4. The top of the tapered extension 14 is rounded.
Referring to Figure 5 of the drawings 16 indicates a battery and 17 one of the terminals thereof, and the latter is of circular cross section. i
In Figures 1, 3' and 5 of the drawings a cable or conductor is indicated at 18.
The connecter shown in Figure 2 is adapted to be used in connection with the form of terminal 8. The connecter shown in Figures 3 and 4 is for employment in connection with the form of extension 14 and the connecter shown in Figure 5 is employed for use in connection with the form of terminal 17.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings the connecter comprises a coupling member having a substantially oval-shaped outer portion 19 which is socketed for fixedly receiving the terminal of the cable or conductor 18. The socket in said portion 19 opens at one endthereof. The outer portion 19 is in electrical contact with the cable 18. Formed integral with the portion 19 and extending inwardly therefrom and at right angles thereto is a yoke-shaped part provided with a base 21 of less length than the length of the outer portion 19. The base 21 is formed integral with the inner side of portion 19. The yokeshaped part further includes a pair of spaced parallel arms 22, 23 having the faces thereof plane. The inner faces of the arms 22, 23 are arranged in opposed, uniform spaced relation and are flat throughout and further are adapted to abut against the flat sides of the extension 9. The free ends of the arms 22, 23 are provided with alignin openings 24, 25 respectively, and which register with an opening formed in the extension 9. Each arm gradually increasing in width from its inner to its outer end. The end edges of the arm are rounded.
Extending through the registering openings is a clamping bolt 26 provided with a head 27 and threadedly engaging with the bolt 26 is a clamping nut 28. The nut 28 in connection with the head 27 securely binds or clamps the arms 22, 23 against the side faces of the extension 9 whereby a direct contact is had and further element-s and 28 function to prevent the loosening of the part 20 with respect to the extension 9. The part 20 is formed of conducting material. The length of the arms 22, 23 is greater than the width of the extension 9, whereby when the conductor 18 is electrically coupled ith the terminal 8 the outer portion 19 to which the conductor 8 is secured will be positioned in proximity to a side of battery 7.
The form of connecter shown in Figures 3 and a is the same as that shown in Figures 1 and 2, with the exception that the inner faces of the arms 29, 30 through which exten l the clamping bolts 31 have their inner faces conform in contour to the shape of the sides of the extension 14 so that said arms will tightly bear against the sides of the extension and in this connection see Figure 3. Otherwise than that as stated the form of connecter shown in Figures 3 and i is the same as that shown in Figures 1 and 2.
lVith reference to Figure 5 there is com bined with the connecter an adaptor referred to generally at 32 for clamping to the terminal 17. The adaptor consists of a split, circular part 33 provided with a pair of apertured ears 3%. The ears 34 are adapted to extend between the arms 35, 36 of the yokeshaped part 37, which corresponds to the yoke-shaped part 20 shown in Figures 1 and 3. Formed integral with the yoke-shaped part 3? is an oval shaped outer portion 38 provided with a socket in which the terminal of the cable or conductor 18 is fixedly secured. The portion 38 corresponds to the portion 19.
The apertures in the ears 34 are indicated at 39 and are adapted to register with the openings 40 formed in the arms 35, 36. EX- tending through the registering openings is a headed clamping bolt 11 and which carries a clamping nut 42. The arms 35, 36 in connection with the bolt 41 and nut l2 clamp the part 33 tightly around the terminal 17 and further tightly clamp the cars 34: to the yokeshaped part 37.
The cable terminal can be quickly removed from the battery terminal when occasion re quires by a connecter in accordance with this invention. Furthermore the connecter enables a firm connection to be easily maintained with new terminals, or with old terminals which have become thin by corrosion or flaking.
Shoulders or stops on the terminal 8 enable the holding of the cable terminal at any desired angle as well as prevent any rotation about the terminal or clamping bolt. The connecter provides for direct contact with the battery terminal whether the adaptor 32 is employed or not.
It is thought the many advantages of a battery terminal connecter in accordance with this invention and for the purpose set forth can be readily understood, and al though the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
