' IoE CREAM FREEZER Application filed December 14;";1928. Serial No. 325,996.
This inventionrelates to ice cream freezers,
and particularly to freezers comprising a rotative drum, one face of which is'refriger ated and another face of which 1s in contact with the mixture to be frozen, said mixture forming, through rotation of the drum, a more or less thin layer of ice cream upon the last mentioned face. adapted to be removed by a scraper or other suitable'means. 1
An object of the invention is to adapt a receiver for the ice cream scrapings to be also utilized as a channel forfdelivering an ice-cream-forming liquid into the casing of the freezer. I fl Another object isto establish' an improved mountingin such casing of said receiver so as-to facilitate its removal and replacement. Afurther objectis to provide ascraper for removing a layer of ice cream from the surface of a revolving drum and to adapt said scraper fora further use in packing the V scrapings in a suitable receiver. 1 i
Still 'another object 'is to provide a 'dru m for receiving a suitable freezingmixture and to provide in an improved manner for journaling said drum for quick removal from'and replacement in the casing of a'freezer.
' A still further objectisto' provide in one end -of such a drum an- -0pening'for :introducing a freezing mixture into the drum and to provide an improved mean's for quickly establishing a closure for said opening in sealing engagementwith the-drum. A
It is also an object of the invention to provide' in the casing of a freezer of the aforesaid character a window permitting a} visual inspection of the scrapings receiver so that it may be:readil y ascertained when 'said receiver is full. x I I These and various other objects the invention attains by the construction hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawingspwhereinz i Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal vertical section of the improved freezer.

Figure 7 is a fragmentary elevation in parof the drum.
- Figure 8 is a similar view of the rear journal. of the drum. I j 1 Briefly referring firstto the primary ele-' ments of the improved freezer, the reference characters 1 and 2 designate. upper and lowor members of a casing, theformer providing a cover for the latter, and the latter being adapted to receive in its lower portion a liquid ice cream mixture. In said casing is journaleda drum 3, adapted tov receive a freezing mixture such as ice and salt, the axis of said drumbeing preferably in the meeting plane ofthe upper and lower casing members the lower portion of said drum be ing in'us'e immersed in said ice cream mixture. A handle 4, or' other suitable drive element for the drumfls carried thereby in an exterior relationlto the casing. There is further arranged within the casing and preferably upon the upper member thereof, a
gage. the exteriorfaceof the drum for substantially its entire length to remove a layer ofice cream from said face. Finally the casingrcontains T a receiver 6 mounted in such proximity to the drum and scraperas to receive the scrapings and preferably also in such a relation to'the scraper that the latter pack the contents of said 'ing. a journalpin 8 integrally projecting from abracket' 9 which is interiorly at tached tothemember 2;of the casing at the upperedge of said" memberl' 'The'other exscraperblade .5, normally positioned to entremity' of thedrum is, formed centrally with an openingIlO, providing for the intro- 1 l duction into and'removal from the drum of a freezing mixture. Marginally of said ning, a collar 11 projects outwardly from tli drum, and within said collar an annular seat 12 for a closure 13 is provided. A pair of lugs 14 radially projecting from said closure? at opposite, points thereof, are adapted toifit into anpair of recesses 15in said collar to assure disposal of the closure in. either of two positions. Centrally pivoted upon the closure is a latchbar 1:6 which hasitse'n'ds hooked as-indicated' at 17 and projecting stifficiently beyond said closure to engage an annular rib 18 formed as a radial projection upon the collar 11. .To..allow ,the hooked 15 ends of said latch bar to engage said iii) the collie 11 is formedrwith" a pain. of :dimmctricall opposed notches 191thu0ugh iwhie'lrzthe 17:may.pass as. the closure linisiinserted in said collar. \Vhen the closure itesubatantiallyseated,"thinker/161 mayober-rotated upon its central pivot-toeugageritheahooks thereofiwvith said rib and; secure thanlrmu'e in place. . In; the operationof the described a pliance a sufioientguantity oithe'ice-creain orming liquid is. introducedinto' .the casing member 1 to fullyi-mmersethe', lower portion. o'fisaid casing, an'd' from' time to' time inlthe operation of the machinethis liquid may be replenished as becomes necessary. In introducing said liquidthe receiver 6 will preferably be partially withdrawn from the casing as shown in Figure 3, being tilted in such position as said figure indicates, the liquid then being poured into the member 1 through said receiven The drum 3 is initially substantially filled with a suitable freezing mixture such as broken ice and salt. The operator now gradually rotatesthe drum 3 in the direction of the arrow in Figure 1, and the ice-creamforming liquid will soon become so chilled as to deposit a thin layer of ice cream upon the outer face of said drum. The formation of this layer will primarily occur upon the bottom portion of the drum, since the portion of the liquid contacting with the drum bottom is relativelythin and will consequently be more completelyand rapidly chilled by the drum than other portions of the liquid.
This progressively formed frozen layer will be carried around by rotation of the drum until it encounters the scraperblade 5, being removed by the latter and discharged into the receiver 6. Thus as the drum is rotated the scrapings of ice cream will continuously accumulate in the receiver 6, and from time to time may be packed down by the operator by use of the scraper member 5 as is indicated in dash lines in Figure 1. To permit manipulation of the blade 5 so that it may serve both as a'scraper and apacker a handle 34 is secured to the rear journal member of said blade, exteriorly of the casing. Thereceiver 6 is removed when filled, and its contents dis charged into some suitable receptacle and is then replaced for another filling.
The production of ice cream by this improved freezer is accomplished rapidly and with very slight manual exertion, it being possible for a child to operate the freezer without difficulty. Apart from the bracket 9 and the'blade 5 there are no interior projections upon'the casing 1,2 so-that the latter may be easily and thoroughly cleaned.
Also the described provision for sealing the filling opening of the drum permits the closure for said opening to-be quickly sealed in place as to positively assure against any contamination of the ice cream by the contents What'we claim is: 7;
