Description

L. ROBINSON..
SEWING-MACHINE. No.18 6,061. Patented Jan.9, 1877.
N. PETERS PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON, D 2v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LYMAN ROBINSON, OF MATTEAWAN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,061, dated January 9, 1877; application filed May 1,
To all whom it-may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN ROBINSON, of Matteawan, Dutchess county, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sewing-Machine, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to adapt a sewing-machine for sewing on the binding of the brims of stiff hats, which, up to this time, have been sewed by hand, the shape of the brims being such that they cannot be sewed by the machines as now constructed.
My invention consists of the needle and the presser-foot projected outward from the head in which the bar works, to allow room for turning the crown of the hat over toward the head, so that the needle and presser-foot can work on the upper side of the brim along the sides, which are curved up toward the crown, the same being effected by setting the head back ot' the throat-plate and shuttle-race, and providing a horizontal arm or extension of the needle and presser bars, in which the needle and presser are supported outwardly from the head in the line of the arm of the machine, on which the needle and presser bars work.
The drawing is a side elevation of the presser and needle bars, and the head in which they work, showing my improvement.
A is the needle-bar; B, the presser-bar, and O the head in which they work. D is the horizontal arm of the needle-bar, and E is the horizontal arm of the presser-bar, by which the needle F and the presser G are projected beyond the head in the line of the arm H, (dotted,) so that room is provided for swinging the crown lot the hat toward the head far enough for the needle and presser to work inside of the upwardly-curved edge J oi the brim along the sides of the hat, to sew the binding.
The arm H of the machine will be shortened the length of the arms D and E; or, if pre ferred, the shuttle and feeder may be advanced in the same measure, but probably the simplest way is to shorten the arm.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sewing-machine having the needle F and the presser G, projected laterally from the plane of the head by horizontal extensions or projections of the needle and presser bars, substantially as herein shown and described.
LYMAN ROBINSON.
