Description

W. H. MALONE.
PRESS FOR GOMPRES SING TOBACCO AND OTHER ARTICLES.
No.186,049. Patented Jan. 9, 1877 ATTORNEYS.
I N. PETERS. PHD a-LITHDGRAPHUL WASHINGTON- D Q NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. MALONE, OF FARMINGTON, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSES FOR COMPRESSING TOBACCO AND OTHER ARTICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 186,049, dated January 9, 1877 application filed November 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MALONE, of Farmington, in the county of Graves and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Press for (.lompressin g Tobacco and other articles, of which the following is a specification Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the pawls and ratchet-racks.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in the arrangement, in a suitable frame, of a lever, which is pivoted in one of the upright ends of the frame, and moves in a slot in the opposite end of the frame, the said slot being provided with ratchet-racks, which are engaged by pawls attached to the end of the lever. It further consists of a lever, which is fulcrumed in the said frame, and carries a ratchet-bar that engages with, and moves, the first-mentioned lever. It also consists in a device for raising the main lever after the bale has been pressed.
The object of the invention is to provide a press which is simple and inexpensive in its construction, which possesses the requisite strength, and which may be rapidly operated.
Referring to the drawing, A and B are vertical posts, which are connected by timbers O, that are gained and secured to the posts, which are also gained by keys a. D is a lever, that is pivoted in a mortise in the post A, and moves in a slot, b, in the post B. The said slot is provided with a ratchet-rack, c, at each side, and the lever D carries two pawls, e,
that may be thrown over, so that they will engage with the racks c. E is a lever fulcrumed in a mortise in the post B, and slotted to receive the ratchet-bar F, which is pivoted at d. The ratchet-bar extends upward through a mortise near the free end of the lever D, and engages with a pin, it, that runs through the said mortise. A hole is made in the upper end of the ratchet-bar, to receive acord,f, that runs through astaple, g, in the top of the post B, for the purpose of releasing the bar F. G is a bar that is pivoted in the short arm of the lever E, and extends upward through a mortise in the lever D, and is provided with the pin it. Pins it project from the face of the post B for receiving a bar, j, that is placed under the lever D, when it is desired to hold it up out of the way. The article to be compressed is placed on the timbers O, and the lever D is lowered until it rests on the bale. The lever E is raised, and the ratchet-bar F moves upward through the slot in the lever. It falls against the pin it by its own gravity, so that when the lever E is moved downward it carries the end of the lever D with it. The pawls c engage with the ratchet-racks c, and prevent the lever D from rising while the lever E is raised, and the bar F again engages the pin it. The operation is repeated until the lever D is brought down as far as may be desired. The lever D is raised by throwing back the pawls c and disengaging the ratchetbar F by drawing the cordfand pressing the lever E down until the lever D is raised the required height by means of the said lever E acting through the bar G, when the rod j is placed under the lever and upon the pins t to support the lever while arranging the bale in the press.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a press, the combination of the levers D and E, ratchet-bar F, pin it. ratchetracks c, and pawls e, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the levers D and E, and the bar G, provided with the pin h, substantially as shown and described.
3. The posts A B, timbers G, lever D, ratchet-racks c, pawls e, lever E, ratchet-bar F, pin is, cordf, and bar G, having the pin h, substantially as shown and described.
WILLIAM HUTGHISON MALONE.
