The present invention relates to containers for merchandise and the primary object'of the invention is to provide an efficient container useful for packing, displaying and dis- 6 pensing merchandise contained therein. An-

other object of the invention is to simplify the construction of the device so as to facilitate the manufacture thereof and the operation of setting up the container in its opera-- tive condition. Another object is to produce a container which offers the maximum display value obtainable with the size thereof and in which display the merchandise is fully exposed and dispensable one at a time from the container. The articles of merchandise may be conveniently removed from the container but certain operations have to be performed which tend to lessen the liability of surreptitious removal of the articles.

In carrying out the invention the improved container comprises a body member having one or more compartments for containing v the merchandise preferably in a column when the container is standing on its end which is the preferred display position thereof. Supporting means are provided to retain the container in this position. Each compartment has an inspection opening through which the merchandise is visible and the articles of merchandise are removable separately from the bottom through an opening or openings in the side or sides of the container.-

The improved container is preferably con structed of a single sheet of paper board which is cut. scored, folded and delivered in a flat or collapsed position and by a simple operation the container is set up for packing the merchandise therein. The easel or supporting means is preferably an integral part of the container and which supporting means or easel is placed in the operative position by a simple operation.

An embodiment of the invention will be hereinafter more fully described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein;

Figure 4 illustrates the one piece blank of which the complete container and supporting means is constructed.

Referring to the drawings, articularly to Figure 4;, wherein the blank 2 is shown on one side as being in its folded position and on the other side the blank is in its unfolded position. Said blank A is out and scored to divide the same into a number of sections and parts all of which will be designated by different reference numerals and the same numerals are applied to the parts as they appear in the set up position shown in the other fig ures of the drawings.

The sections of the blank A comprise the body section 1 having lateral extensions 2. The body section 1 forms the display front of the container and which front has therein an inspection opening 3 facing each compartment preferably one on each side so as to balance the container. The extension 2 is divided by score or folding lines 4 into sections 5, 6 and 6 which respec tively form the back and side walls of the compartment in which the articles of merchandise are contained. Sections 7 adjoining the sections 6 also defined by score crease lines 4, provide surfaces which are adhesively secured to the back of the front or body section 1. In the gluing operation the extension 2 is folded back on the line 4' whereby the compartment 8 is formed and when so folded the ends 7 of the extension are freeand in the collapsed position of the container these ends lie flat against the back of the container.- When the container is set up in the display position, the ends 7 are folded at substantially right angles to the container and held in this position by an interlocking flap 9 which so engages the folded end 7' to retain it in a rigid position to operate as an easel for the container.

In the embodiment of theinvention as illustrated, the improved display and dispensing container is provided with compartments at each side thereof. The merchandise 10 is carried within these compartments in a column and which merchandise is visible through the opening 3 in the front face of the container. The compartments are filled through the open top thereof and which filling is facilitated through opening 12 in the back wall of the container. The open ends of the compartment are closed by tuck-in flap 13 and which flap when in its closed position tends to operate in conjunction with a tuckin end at the bottom to retain the folded blank in position to form the said compartment. The device for closing the bottom end of the compartment comprises a flap 14 which is cut out of the stock at the bottom of the inspection opening. This cut out portion 14. is arranged to fold so as to form a platform or rest for the column of merchandise.

The contents of the container are removable or dispensable one at a time through an opening 15 which is partially closed by a flap 16. To further facilitate removal of the merchandise, on the opposite side of the compartment, in alignment with the opening 15, another opening 17 is provided and the purpose of this latter opening is to permit the operator to insert his finger therein to push the lowermost article of merchandise or package through the discharge opening 15. In Figures 2 and 3, the container is shown respectively in its display and collapsed position and it will be noted the operation of changing the container from its collapsed position to the said open position is very simple for all that is required is the sections forming the side walls of the compartments are brought over to a position at right angles to the front or display sheet of the container. The merchandise may then be placed into the compartments and the two ends of the compartment are closed as above described and the container is then ready for shipment. In setting the container up for display it is only'required that the easel should be opened and retentive means for holding the same in the open position are brought into the operative position.

The improved container has obvious advantages as a packing and. shippingcontainer and also as a display or advertising device. In the latter use of the container the exposed merchandise in conjunction with the comparatively large area of the advertising surface of the display or front sheet is of special value. In the preferred form, as shown, a compartment is located at each side of the display container and this provides a balanced structure and the easel or supporting means lies between said compartments whereby the support is particularly firm, which is of special advantage when the merchandise is comparatively heavy. In some cases, however, the merchandise may be such that it will be possible to get as good results if only one compartment is used and which compartment would be located at one side of the device. To get this one sided structure the blank A would be modified only in that just one side thereof would be employed. It will be noted both sides of the blank are identical and one side of the blank may be eliminated so as to have a single compartment construction instead of. a double one. In this modification the front sheet could be of increased width so as to allow a greater space for advertising matter.

Various modifications may be made in carrying out the constructional details of the invention hereinbefore described or in the application of the invention, wholly or partly, and it is to be understood that any modification coming fairly within the terms of the appended claims shall be covered thereby.

I claim:

1. A container of the class described composed of a one sheet blank, said blank having a main section forming a front or display sheet having an inspection opening therein, a lateral extension from said main section being folded and adhesively secured to said main section to form a compartment on the back of said main section, said compartment having collapsible side walls provided with openings therein adjacent to the bottom thereof. means for closing the open top and bottom of said compartment, said means operating to retain the compartment in its set up position. and the means for closing the bottom of said compartment comprising a folded portion cut out to provide said inspection opening and said bottom closing means operating as an elevated platform or support for merchandise-contained within said compartment.

2. A container of the class described composed of one sheet blank, said blank having a main section forming a front or display sheet having an inspection opening therein, a lateral extension from said main section being folded and adhesively secured to said main section to form a compartment on the back of said main section, said compartment having collapsible side walls provided with openings therein adjacent to the bottom thereof, means for closing the open top and bottom of said compartment, said means operating to retain the compartment in its set up position, the means for closing the bottom of said compartment comprising a folded portion cut out to provide said inspection opening, said bottom closing means operating as a platform or support for merchandise contained within said compartment, and said extension carrying a wing integral therewith which is adapted to be folded and secured to operate as an easel or support for the container.
