This invention relates to pipe covering and the object of the invention is to provide acovering for insulating pipe lines which may be readily secured to or removed from a pipe with a minimum of trouble and i-ncon venience.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pipe covering for use in connection with a resilient compressible lnsulating medium in which. the insulating medium is compressed within a casing when positioned on a pipe and the resiliency of the lnsulating medium is utilized sition on the i e.

This invention is designed for use with,
mineral wool on account of its high insulating qualities and the fact that it is resilient and compressible.- .The mineral wool may be used in its raw state but is preferably felted in blocks for use. in this device. The usual method of applying mineral wool to pipe lines is to use the mineral fwool felted in blocks and wrap it around the pipe which is then "covered with a wire mesh secured about the mineral wool to hold the mineral wool in place on the pipe. After this has been done a coating of plaster is laid over the wire mesh and after the plaster hasdried it is covered or wrapped with fabthe installation is completed. While eflicient results are attained in this manner it is impossible to produce ahsmoothand even contour on the finished pipe covering. Another disadvantage is due to the time lost in applying this type of covering to the pipe as it is necessary to wait until the plaster coat has dried before the covering is wrapped on and after the covering'is wrapped and a coat of paint is applied it is necessary'to wait for the paint to dry before a second coat may be applied. Another disadvantage is due to the fact that'considerable of the paint soaks into the covering and thus an excessive quantity of paint is utilized.
In my invention the pipe covering is made up in sections andmay' be applied to the pipe in end to end relation along the pipe lines being covered and the joints between the sections may be covered with a thin metal strap at which time the entirecovering may be given a single thick coat of paint which.
covers the covering and the'installation-is completed at one time without requiring the return of the workers to complete or finish the job. My device, as shown in Fig. 3, consists of a piece of sheet. metal 1 which is first bent to substantially U shaped form as shown in Fig. 3. This member 1 is provided with return bent edge flanges 2 and 3. The-felted block 4 of mineral wool is then applied to the inside of the member 1 with an adhesive at which timethe device is ready for installation. I

and the edges 2 and 3 are turned inwardly to the position shown in Fig.4 and suflicient mineral wool is provided on the-felted block so that it is necessary to'compress the mineral wool about the pipe to bring the,. flanges 2 and 3 to overlapping position. When this has .been do n'e, by means of specialpliers as shown in Fig. 4, the inherent resiliency of the compressed mineral wool tends to, ex-
pand the casing 1 and causesthe flanges 2 and 3 to interengage as shown-in Fig. 4.
As the mineral wool always retains its resiliency a constant pressure is maintained on the outer casin 1 at'all times tending to hold the interlocking flanges 2 and 3 in engagemen... The pipe covering comes in different lengths and the different sections are 7 installed in end to end relation throughout the length of the pipe. Each section of the covering 1 is notched out at 6 where the flanges 2 and 3 come together and when the sections are positioned in abutment the notches provide a space for the thin -1 netal strap 7 which is utilized to cover the oint.
One end of the strap is provided with a link 8 secured thereto and the opposite end of the strap is inserted through this link and bent over as shown to cover the joint 9. Thestallers may install the covering and give it its final coat of paint thus completing the installation at one time and eliminating the necessity ofreturning to the 'ob two or more times to complete the finish ng steps as has been heretofore required. It is also possible to cut the covering with a pair of tin shears to meet special situations or when odd lengths of pipe covering are required .and the installation when completed presents a smooth even surface and finish that cannot be excelled. The casing when installed in this manner is in itself waterproof and fireproof as well'as the insulating material within the casing.
As will be understood from Fig. 4 the special pliers may be used for removmg the pipe covering. By forcing the ends of the pliers inwardly to compress the casing and insulating material the flanges 2 and 3 may be readily'disengaged at which time the covering may bereadil re'movedfrom the pipe and used again. ith the ordinary construction if it is necessary to move a pipe the pipe covering is torn off and thrown away and a new covering isput on. With mypipe covering the pipe covering maybe removed and the pipe moved and the covering may be again replaced on the pipe without impairing its efliciency to the slightest degree? V Whilel have described this invention as used for pipe covering it will be understood that it can be used in the larger sizes for moved from a pipe and provides a device which accomplishes the objects described.
Having thus fully described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. A device of the character described comprising a sheet metal casing cylindrical in form having two edges and adapted for interlocking relation, a resilient and compressible lining, such as felted mineral wool, secured to the casing by cementing the outer surface of the linin member thereto, the arrangement provi ing that in placin the device about a member to be insulated t e lining directly engages the member and by reason of its resilient and compressible characteristics permits the edges of the sheet metal casing to be interlocked and maintained under tension by the lining.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a pipe coveringmanufactured and sold to the trade in the form of a sheet of metal of the desired length and width, the opposite edges of which are return-bent, and a resilient and compressible insulation-secured to the casing and the whole bent to U form with the metal sheet on the exterior of the article, the said edges being adapted to be interlocked in assembling the device on a pipe or the like by folding the legs of the U together to thereby place the lining under compression and hold the said interlocked edges in tension.
