This invention relates to a new and useful device in the nature of a door lock and opener especially adapted for use on motor vehicle doors.
The object of the invention to provide a door lock and opener which will not only hold the door in a closed position but which will greatly faciltate the opening of the said door, eliminating the ordinarymanual eXertion of pushing the door free of the door frame when opening the said door.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the classdescribed of novel construction and arrangement of parts here inafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 isa front elevational view of my improved device as viewed from the outside of a door.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view thereof in an unlocked position as same would appear when viewed from the inside of a door.
Fig. 3 is a similar view to that shown in Fig. 2, showing my improved'device in a locked position. T
Fig. 4; is a transverse sectional viewta-ken on the line4.4ofFig. 3. i
Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3. f
Fig. 6 is a similar View taken on the line 66 of Fig. 2. r
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary elevational View showing in particular a further development of the door openermember as embodied in my improved device.
Fig. 8 isa front'elevational iew of the adjusting device as embodied in my improved door lock and opener. I Y i Fig. 9 is a side elevational view thereof.
As here embodied my improved deyice comprises a case 10 of plate like construction preferably rectangular in shape and having formed therein a pluralityof apertures 11 adapted to receive screws bolts, studs or the like as a means of attaching same to the'frame or any convenient, suitable portion of a' door. A look bar 12 is slidably mounted horizontally in brackets 13 and 14,,or suitabie guides secured to the case 10. The lock bar 12 has formed therein gear teeth 15" adapted toen-v gage, similar gear teeth 16 formed in a disc member 17 rigidly secured to a shaft 18. The
:18 is rotatively mounted in the case. 10 and in a support 19 secured to-the outer surface of the case 10. A handle 20 of any 7 desired suitable shape or contour, knob or the like is secu'redto the outer extended extrernity of the shaft18. Y A keeper 21 of rectangular block like construction has formed therein suitable apertures 22 adapted to receive screws, bolts, studs or the like as a means of attaching same to a door jamb in alignment with the case/10,
as is customary in ordinary practice. This as wi l p rm tt 'e enlarg eXtremity 24 0f the lock bar 12 to be slidahly engaged in the opening 23 formed in the keeper 21 when the door is in a closed position, by means of a partial rotation of the handle 20, for the purpose of holding the door in a locked or closed position. It is understood that the handle 20 is for the locking or unlocking of the door from the-outside of the motor vehicle.
An operating lever 25 is pivoted at its lower extremity as at26 on a pin carried in the case 10,;and is provided with an enlarged free extremity 27 or handle element extended somewhat above the case 10. This operating. lever 25 engages intermediate a pair of side extended elements 28 and 29 of the above mentioned lock'bar 12.
- i The latter described construction is such as willperrnit the lock bar 12 to be operated by pivoting or swinging the operating lever 2?, ifor the purpose as above set forth, and so as to provide a means of inside manipulation.
opener member 30 of bar like construction has formed therein an intermediate elongated aperture 31 adapted to receive the pin 32 secured to the case 10, as a means of slidably mounting the opener member 30 on the pin 31. This opener member 30 is positioned approximately horizontally. The opener member'se s pivetelly ou at n t'remity thereof as at 33 on a pin carried bythe lower extended extremity of the pivoted lever 34. This pivoted lever 34 is pivotally v mounted intermediately as at 35 on a .pin
carried in the case 10. The bell crank 34 is provided with an enlarged upper extended extremity 36 having formed therein an elongated aperture 37 adapted to receive the pm 38 secured intermediately to the lock bar 12.
The opener member is provided with an enlarged extended extremity 34 having a tapered side 35 or surface adapted to engage or strike the tapered side or surface 36 of an opening 37 formed in the keeper 21.
The above described construction is such as will permit the enlarged extremity 34 of the opener member 30 to engage or strike the tapered opening 36 of the opening 37 as above set forth slightly or somewhat after the enlarged extremity 24 of the lock bar 12 has beei'lwithdrawn from the aperture 23 formed in the keeper 21 so as to slightly open the door which will free the door from the door frame and permit the door to be readily and easily opened without any exertion or physical strain on the part of the person desiring to enter or leave the motor vehicle. v In Figs. 7, 8 and 9, I have shown the above mentioned opener member constructed of two members 39 and 39, so as to permit the use of a turn buckle having-a serrated body 40 or main portion and threaded oppositely ex tendedelements 41 and 42 adapted to engage in suitable threaded openings 43 and 44 formed in the above mentioned members 39' and 39; It is understood that the threaded portions 41 and 42 are left and right hand threaded, as is usual with turn buckles. A bracket member 43 substantially of plate like construction is slidably mounted in the pins 44 secured'to and extended from the holder member 45 of plate like construction. These pins 44 are providedwith enlarged extended extremities 46 or heads so as to hold the holder member 43 thereon. Expansion springs 47 are positioned coaxially on the pins '44 as a means of normally holding the bracket member 43 in an outwardly extended position from the holder member 45. 7
An operating member 48 of cylinder like construction having a serrated periphery 49 is rotatively carried on the pin 50 carried in the lug elements 51 and 52 of the bracket member 43. The holder member 45 has formed therein an enlarged opening 53 adapted to freely receive the operating member 48.
This holder member 45 has also formed therein a plurality of apertures 54 adapted to receive, screws, bolts, studs or the like as a means of attaching the holder member 45 to any suitable convenient portion of the case 10.
,The latter described construction is such as will permit the serrated periphery 49 of the operating member 48 to engage the serrated body 40 of the turn buckle when the operating member 48 is manually pressed or urged inwardly as a means of manipulating the turn buckle for the purpose of correctly positioning the enlarged extremity 34 of the opener member so as to provide a more effective and eflicient device.
A suitable spring 25' is provided for keeping the door lock in normally closed position.
It is understood that my improved device may be used on any door such as safe doors, doors of buildings, etc.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit, myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and theright is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims;
Having thus described'my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of lows the United States is asfol- 1; In combination with a door lock'of the receive a pin secured to the case of the said 7 device as a means of slidabl mountin i the 7 y b said opener member on the said: pm, said opener member pivotally mounted at one extremity thereof on a pin carried by the lower extremity of a pivoted lever, said pivoted lever pivotally mounted intermediately on a pin carried in the said case, said pivoted lever operatively connected to the mechanism adapted to operate'the said door lock, the said opener member provided with an enlarged extremity adapted to engage in an opening formed in a catch member as a means of partially opening the said door, an operatingmember' as a means of adjusting the said openermember, said operating member comprising a cylindrical member having tremity thereof on a pin carried by the lower extremity of a pivoted lever, said pivoted lever pivotally mounted intermediately on a pin carried in the'said case, said pivoted lever operatively connected to the mechanism adapted to operatethe said doorlock, the
