This invention relates to material feeding means for pun-ch presses and has for its object to provide a feeding apparatus having a yielding drive which will prevent any part of the apparatus from being damaged when the material fed by the apparatus jams and prevents the proper working thereof.
This and other objects of this invention will be apparent from the drawings, the specification and the appended claims forming a part thereof.

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the feeding apparatus as it appears when mounted on a punch press.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the feeding apparatus without the punch press.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the push rod and guide of the feeding apparatus, the section being taken on the line 3m3m of Figure 1.
In the several figures of the drawings like reference numerals indicate like parts.
The feeding apparatus forming the subject matter of my present invention is suitable for feeding stock for both blanking and forming operations. In the form illustrated in the figures of the drawings the apparatus is adapted for feeding circular blanks or discs to the die of the punch press to be perforated thereby. lVith slight modifications and adjustments the same apparatus how ever can be adapted to feed other material either for blanking or forming in the die of the punch press and the scope of the invention is therefore not limited by the particular detail design of the apparatus illustrated in the drawings.
The feeding apparatus is supportedon the die block 1 and projects to one side thereof. In the die block is mounted the die 2 with which the punch 3 cooperates to perforate the discs or blanks fed by the feeding apparatus. The punch 3 is mounted in the bottom of the ram a and is reciprocated thereby on the movement of the ram between the gibs 5 and 6 on the operation of the punch press.
A base plate 7 is suitably'fastened to the die block 1 and on it are mounted the brackets 8 and 9. Bracket 8 provides the support der the magazine and placed over the die 2.
This is' done by the push rod or slide 12 which is mounted in the guide channel formed between the guides 13 and 14 at the left of the magazine. The central portion of the push rod or slide: is slotted and into this slot engages the free end of'the bell crank lever 15. The outer end of the push rod or slide 12 is provided with an extension 16 which is adjustably fastened thereto by means of the screws 17 and 18. These screws pass thru slots in the extension 16 so as to permit this extension to be adjusted laterally on the end of the push rod or slide 12. The inner end of the extension 16 is provided with a lug 19 which projects into the slot of the push rod and forms the stop against which the bell crank lever 15 is held by the spring 20. This spring is attached with one end to the bell crank lever 15 and with the other end to the eye 21 depending from the outer end of the push rod extension 16 so that the tension of the spring 20 normally holds the free end of the bell crank against the lug 19 in the slot of the push rod.
The bell crank is operated by the ram 1 of the punch press by means of the arm 21 which is attached thereto and projects to one side thereof. A link 22 connects the arm 21 with the bell crank and is pivoted with one end to the arm and with the other end to the bell crank23 On the reciprocation of the ram of the punch press the bell crank is thus oscillated by the reciprocating movement of the ram on the operation of the punch press. The bell crank in turn operates to move the slide or push rod12 back and forth in its guide channelso that the front end thereof, which passes under the magazine 10, pushes the lowermost of the discs from under the magazine along the runway 11 unt1l it reaches a point above the die'2 where the runway is cut away to allow the disc to drop down onto the die in position to have the punch 3 perforate it on its descent. As will be seen from Figure 1 the connection between the ram and the push rod or slide is such as to cause the slide or push rod to move toward the die and deliver a disc to the die onthe-up stroke of the ram andmove away from the die on the down stroke of the ram while the delivered disc is perforated by the punch carried by the ram.
If for any reason one ofthe discs in the 20, allows the bell crank to swing in the slot ted section of the push rod without moving the push rod in the guide slot. The yielding connection thus prevents the breaking of any part of the driving connection between the ram and the push rod on-the sudden arrest of the movement of the push rod due to the amming of the discs while being fed from the magazine to the die. The b'ell crank will continue to swing in the slot of the push rod on the-operation of the punch press as long as the push rod is held against movement but no harm will be done to the mechanism of either the punch press or the feeding apparatus so that after the cause of the jamming of the disc is corrected the feeding apparatus will be ready to again feed thediscs from the magazine to the die.
In order to properly position the blanks or discs over the die a stop mechanism isprovided. This stop mechanism comprises a lever 30 which is pivoted on one side of the runway and carries the pins 31' and 32, one
at each end thereof. A spring 33 is attached to the outer end of the lever 30 and yieldingly holds this end of the lever so that the pin 32 is held in place in the notch 3 1 provided in the side of the runway. In this position the pin offers no obstruction to the passage of the discs or blanks in the runway. While the pin 32 is held nested in the notch 3d the pin 31, carried at the other end of the lever 30, is held to project into the runway or guide channel'of the push rod or slide 12, but when the'slide or push rod is moved andreaches the pin 81, the pin is forced into thegroove in the side of the runway and in doing so rocks the lever 30 and swings the pin 32 out from its notch into the dotted line position illustrated in Figure 2. In this position the pin 32 serves as a stop for the disc or blank which is fed forward by the push rod or slide and stops the disc or blank when it is located end of the slide or push rod has passed thepin 31 on its return movement to the magazine the spring 33 again operates to swing the lever 30 back to its normal position in which the pin 31 is swung out into the guide channel'of'the slide or push rod while the pin 32 is swung back into the groove 34: in the side of the runway. This is necessary. in order to withdraw the stop and allow the-perfo rated disc or blank to-be pushed away from the die'by the pushv rod extension 85. This extension projects forwardly from the bottom of the push rod or slide and is thin so as not to interfere with the action of the end of the push rod against the discs or blanks located in the magazine. The extension 86 projects forwardly of the push rod or slide a distance which brings the outer end of the extension in engagement with the perforated disc or blank and pushes it out of the way before the next disc or blank is fedto the die and. is located thereon by the push rod propern.
I claim:
1. In 7 a feeding apparatus for punch presses the combination of a guide, a push rod having a slot therein mounted.to reciprocate in said guide, an oscillating lever engaging into the slot in said push rod and adapted to swing back and forth therein, a spring connectingsaid lever with said push rod to yieldingly hold said oscillating lever against one end of the slot in said push rod. andreciprocate said push rod on the oscillation of said lever by means of said connecting spring, said push rod being adapted to feeda blank on the movement thereof in one direction.

In afeeding apparatus for punch presses the combination of a guide, a push rod having a slot therein mounted to reciprocate in said guide, an adjustable stop at, one end of the slot, an oscillating lever extending into the slot in said push rod, yielding means connecting saidlever with said push rod and holding said lever against said adjustable stop in said slot, means for oscillating said lever on the operation of the punch press tofeed blanks to the die of the punch press.
3'. In a feeding apparatus for punch presses the combination of a guide, a runway forming a continuation of said guide, a pushrod mounted to reciprocate in said guide, said push rod having a slot therein, a magazine adapted tohold blanks mounted above said runway, an operating lever engaging the slot in said push rod and adapted to swing back and forth therein, yielding means connecting said operating lever with said push rod to hold said push rod against one end of the slot and move said push rod thru said yielding means in one direction, said push rod being adapted to feed a blank from said magazine along said runway.
4. In a feeding apparatus for punch presses the combination of a guide, a runway forming a continuation of said guide, a push rod mounted to reciprocate in said guide, a magazine adapted to hold blanks mounted above said runway, an operating lever for said push rod, yielding means connecting said operating lever with said push rod to move said push rod thru said yielding means in one direction, said push rod being adapted to feed a blank from said magazine along said runway, a stop mechanism comprising a lever, a pin carried at one end of said lever adapted to project into the path of said push rod, a stop pin carried at the opposite end of said lever, said first pin being operated by said push rod to swing said stop pin into said runway and provide a stop for the blank fed by said push rod on its movement in one direction.
5. In a feeding apparatus for punch presses the combination of a guide, a runway forming a continuation of said guide,,a push rod mounted to reciprocate in said guide, a magazine adapted to hold blanks mounted above said runway, an operating lever for said push rod, yielding means connecting said operating lever with said push rod to move said push rod thru said yielding means in one direction, said push rod being adapted to feed a blank from said magazine along said runway, a stop mechanism comprising a lever, a pin carried at one end of said lever adapted to project into the path of said push rocl, a stop pin carried at the opposite end of said lever, said first pin being operated by said push rod to swing said stop pin into said runway and provide a stop for the blank fed by said push rod on its movement in one direction and means for withdrawing said stop pin from the blank on the return movement of said push rod to permit the blank after being operated upon to be moved out of said runway to make room for the next blank fed by said push rod.
