i Myyinvention relates to mattresses'and has among its objects the' productionof a mat-i tress'of the kind described which is comfortable, simple, durable, attractiveA in appearance, efficient and'satisfactory. The mattress is of the type known as an inner spring Inattress in which a suitable spring construction is enclosed within the mattress.
The invention has particularly as an object the production of a mattress that is construct-l ed so that it will to a very large extent retain its original shape and'attractive appearance even after long use, without in any way impairing or sacrificing the most desirable requirement of a mattress, to-wit, itscomfort and rest giving qualities.
With the improved mattress herein described the inner springs are permitted their full play, resiliency and movement, unrestricted insofar as their intendedaction is concerned. It has, as further objects the production o f a mattress of the kind described in which the side boxing may be so made that flexing and buckling is reduced to a minimum 25 when the mattressis carrying a load, and
totally absent when the mattress is 'not 0c cupied.
Itl has as a further object the production of. a mattress having a quilted side boxing 99 which is ornamental and distinctive in appearance, as well as eli'ective to permit the passage of air into or out of the mattress,-
I thereby preventing flexing or buckling of the boxing due to air-pressure as in the case of a sealed boxing. It also has as an object .the lproduction of a sid'e'boxing affording a novel tufted eiif'ect not possible to secure with stitches extending acrossA or lengthwisethe Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the Adisclosure herein given.
To this en d my invention 'consists 'in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinshown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claim. g
In the drawings,; wherei n' 'like 'reference quilting;
characters indicate like or corresponding Fig. 1 is a plan view'ofone corner'of a mattress;
Fig. 2 is` an edge elevation of the same; 5'5 Fig. 3 is a sectional view t-aken substantially online 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 isa sectional view taken substantiallyon line 4-4 of Fig. 2, showing the 00 Fig. 5 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3, illustrating a modified type of inner spring construction Fig. 6 is a perspective view illustrating the method of foldlng the edges of the inner ply 9 of the edge boxing.; and
Fig. -7 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 7-7 of 6.
Referring to the drawings in which only two embodiments of the invention are shown, one type or form is illustrated in Fig. 3 and the other form to be hereinafter described is l illustrated in Fig. 5. As shown, 1 represents aspring construction made up of the 'desired number and styles of springs, theparticular construction in itself forming no part of the present invention. In some constructions the springsare'uncovered or bare, while in othersathe same are entirely encased in a` covering' of canvass, burlap or the like. In other 80 types=of constructions, each coil is enclosed in a pocketzand the several pockets secured' together.' Extended over4 the faces ofthe spring'construction are cover sheets 2 and 3 of burlap, canvass or the like, 6 and 7 repre- 85 senting vouter cover sheets of ticking or other suitable material between which and the re-v spective sheets 2 and 3. is arranged -filling 4 and 5 of cotton, hair, kapok, or any material commonly used or suitableA for the purpose. The outer cover sheets 6 and-7 are made of a width and length greater than the Width. and length of the springconstruction Ar-v 'ranged about the edge of the mattress is a boxing which in the preferred construction consists of an outer ply 8, an inner ply 9, and filling material 10 arranged between the two,`the inner and outer plies and-filling being quilted or secured together by means of 'tubular eyelets 11 or their equivalent for lo" the purpose. The eyelets shown not onlyv ly shown in Fig. 3, the inner ply 9 is con-,
siderably Wider than the outer ply 8, so that' it may be folded over and in as indicated at 12 at the two edges and overlie the inner Asheets 2 and 3, the same beingpreferably of a size so that it will extend inwardly a substantial distance from the'edg'es of the mattress. As most clearly shown at 14 in Fig. 6,
the inwardly extending portions 12 may be stitched or tacked together at the corners. Ordinarily the edge portions extend inwardly af-substantial distance. 'The mattress may be tufted in the usual manner as indicated at 15 by extending the usual tie entirely through and connecting the cover sheets or merely through the cover sheet filling and adjacent inner sheet at each side.v It is immaterial whether or not the'ties extend through the portions 12, this depending entirely on the length or width of portions 12, as well as the location of the tufting ties 15.
The edge portions 17 of the outer sheet are secured to the edge portions'18 of the cover sheets Band 7. The same may be hemmed or bound -as indicated' at 19 if so desired. It is preferred generally to form the mattress With rolls 16, and this is' accomplished by stitching back and forth throughthe filling, and the outer ply and cover sheet as indicated at 20.
The form of mattress shown in. Fig. 5 is more or less similar except in this style the` spring construction is made up of the desired number of springs 21 lor their equivalents which are shown encased in the spring cover 22-23. In some cases spring constructions are sold with covering on, of canvass, burlan or the equivalent and this type of spring is illustrated in Fig. 5. Otherwise the mattress Vis the same as shown in the embodiment first described. Y
The present invention has many advantages over other constructions; The boxing may be made of substantial thickness, theref',
by adding stiffness to the same, and the inner and outer plies and filling may be secured together. leaving/the plies slightly separated with the filling distending the same at substantially all points except where the eyelets 11 are positioned. The eyelets not only retain the boxing together, .but provide for` venting, which is very desirable in a mattress of this kind, and also they allow for the passage of air out 'or in so that the boxing is not pushed in and out. or buckled when the mattress is4 in use. By putting the extending parts 12H on the boxing. this substantially connects the boxing lto the filling and cover.v sheets so .that when the mattress is-occupied at a point inward from the] edge there is a pull'at this point on the boxing tending to maintain the same more nearly straight or under strain without outward 'or inward 'buckling In making up the mattress, one sheet 2 may be applied to the spring' construction and thence the part 12 folded over the same and the filling applied and then the cover sheet 6. The mattress may then be turned over andthe op osite side similarly assembled. .The edges 1 and 18 may be theny sewed together, after which the-roll-forming stitches 20 are put in. The extending-portions 12 maintain the boxing in place, thereby facilitating the sewing up of the cover and boxing and forming the roll '.edges. Obviously the depression of the mattress inwardly of the edges tends to maintain the boxing more or less taut, and prevent buckling between the rolls. l
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that Various immaterial modifications may4 be-Inade 'in the same Without de-` parting from the spirit of my invention, hence I do not wish to be understood as limit-- ing myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinv shown and described or uses mentioned.
Whatl I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a mattress, the combination of an inner structure-comprising a plurality of vertical springs arranged in transverse and longitudinal rows, topl andv bottom tick portions, a
quilted boxing' comprising inner and outer plies of textile fabric and interposed filling material', said outer ply being connected with th` marginal edges of said tick portions, said inner ply having wide marginal. edges projecting under the ticking and covering a plurality of the adjacent rows -of springs,
` said projecting marginal edges having their overlapping corner' portions stitched together. v
vIn testimony whereof, I have hereunto si ed-m name.
.gny MAX MARSACK.
