Description

May 24, 1932. J. J. CARNEY CALIPER\ iled Dec.
lllmimmum'l' m mmmmumum //y WEN 7-0;?
Patented May 2.4, 1932 JAMES J. GABNEY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNO'R TO THE UNITED TOOL & DIE COMPANY, INC., OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, A. CORPORATION OF CONNECT- IOUT CALIF-ER Application filed December 10, 1929. Serial No. 413,026.
My invention relates to that class of devices comprising relatively movable blades or legs employed for measuring diameters of devices, and an object of my invention, among 6 others, is to obtain an instrument of this kind that shall be particularly handy to use and that shall be accurate and efiicient in operation.
One form of a device embodying my invention, and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved instrument.
Figure 2 is a detail view, scale enlarged, in section on a plane denoted by the dotted line 22 of Figure 1.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 3 denotes what 1 term a fixed blade or leg comprised in my improved calipers, this blade being curved in shape and preferably tapered from a wider dimension at its base to a narrower dimension at its point 4;, and also tapering rearwardly into a shank 5 that is extended into and secured in a handle 6. An indicator 7 of any ordinary type is secured to the fixed blade 3, this indicator embodying a hand or pointer 8 operating in connection with the dial- 9 having graduations for denoting the amount of movement of the pointer to such degree as may be desired. A plunger 10 is mounted in a stem 11 extending from the edge of the case of the indicator, and any suitable mechanism for connecting the plunger with the dial hand or pointer 8 may be employed to cause such pointer to register in multiplied amounts the movements of the plunger. Such mechanism is common to structures of this class and a further and detailed showing and description are omitted herein.
The plunger 10 has a rack 12 on one edge that meshes with a pinion 13 secured to rotate with a movable blade or leg 14 mounted on the body of the blade 3. rangement, and as shown herein, a stud 15 is screw threadedly secured in a screw threaded hole in the hub of a spacer 16, which hub is also secured to the blade 14 in any suitable manner as by a driving fit or by brazing. The
In the preferred arpinion 13is' secured to the spacer 16 in any suitable manner as by a driving fit or by brazing, the hub of said spacer being mounted to rotate freely in the blade 3, and as shown 1 in Figure 2 of the drawings. The head of the stud 15 is secured against the end of said hub, clearance enough being left between said head and the plate 3 to permit turning movement ofthe hub in said plate.
A. finger piece 18 projects from the outer edge ofthe blade 14:, and a spring 19 secured to and extending from the blade 14: to the blade 3 causes the points of the blades to be normally held incontact.
j The operation will be readily understood, it being noted that by grasping the handle 6 in the hand and using the index finger upon the finger piece 18, the blades may be separated to permit the insertion therebetween of a device to be measured, and pressure on the finger piece being released, the spring 19 Will cause the points of both blades to makecontact with the devices on oppositesidesthere of. The rotation of the pinion 13in this opv eration will have moved the hand or pointer 8 to a" position to indicate on the dial the amount of separation of the points of the two blades and hence the dimensions of devices being measured, this in a manner thatwill be readily understood.
It will be noted that although the point of the movable blade or leg travels on the arc of a circle, the connections between such blade and the dial or register are so proportioned and arranged as to register the proper distance at any point between the two legs or blades of the instrument.
I claim 1. Calipers including a blade having a widened base with a shank projecting therefrom into a handle, an indicator including an index finger secured on said widened base near said shank, a blade pivotally mounted adjacent one end on said base adjacent to said shank, a pinion secured to the pivotally mounted blade to form a segment extending across the pivoted end of the blade, and a plunger operatively connected with said indeX finger and projecting across the pivoted end of said pivoted blade and having a rack engaged with said pinion.
2. Calipers including a supporting blade having a handle portion rigid therewith, a blade pivotally mounted adjacent one end on the supporting blade, an indicator including an index finger mounted on said supporting blade, a plunger connected with said indicator and extending laterally across the pivv oted end of said pivotally mounted blade, a
rack on said plunger, and a toothed member secured to the pivoted blade and having its teeth extending transversely across the pivoted end of said pivoted blade and engaged v with said rack.
3. Calipers including a supporting blade, a blade pivotally mounted adjacent one end on said supporting blade, a toothed member secured to said pivotally mounted blade at the pivoted end thereof, an indicator including an index finger mounted on said supporting blade, a plunger projecting'from said indicator and operatively connected with said finger, and a rack on said plunger engaged with said toothed member.
4:. Calipers including a supporting blade, an indicator including an index finger mounted on said blade, a spacer in the form of a button having a hub projecting through and rotatably mounted in said supporting blade, a pivotally mounted blade having a hole through which said hub projects, means attached to said hub for securing said blades against separation while permitting pivotal movement of the pivoted blade, a pinion secured to said spacer, a plunger projecting from said indicator and operatively connected with said finger, and a rack on said plung-r er having teeth engaged with teeth onsaid JAMES J. CARNEY.
pinion.
