My invention aims to provide improvements in separable fasteners.
In the drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a sectional view of a snap fastener stud installation embodying my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the stud member prior to attachment to a support.
While I have selected a well known type of snap fastener stud member with which to illustrate my invention, it should be understood that other types of separable fastening members and installations may be pro-- vided with my invention.
The stud member illustrated by the drawings is pressed from sheet metal and has a base 1, a neck 2, a ring-shaped head 3 and a central depressed portion 4. A snap fastener stud member having all of these elements when considered broadly is shown in my United States Letters Patent No. 1,641; 917, issued September 6, 1927. In my present invention, however, the bottom 5 of the central depressed portion 4 is curved to provide an anvil which cooperates with an apertured plate 6 to upset and clench the attaching means presented by an attaching part, as shown in Figure 1.
The attaching part particularly adapted for use with my fastener unit is a so-called double pointed tack 7 having prongs 8 whlch are pointed to penetrate cloth, leather and the like to which the stud may be secured, as shown in Figure 1.
The plat-e 6 is secured to the base 1 of the stud by a flange 9 extending over the edge and against the under side of the plate. Two apertures 1010 (Fig. 2) are provided in the plate through which the prongs 8 of the double pointed tack 7 are adapted to pass after penetrating the flexible material 11. These apertures are elongated in one cllrection (Fig. 2) and the material between them presents a curved surface for purposes hereinafter described.
Any suitable attaching means may be used for attaching the stud and tack to opposite sides of the flexible material 11. Since the bar 12 between the slots 10-10 presents a with the surface 5 they will be turned inwardly over the bar 12, as shown inFigure 1, thereby securing the parts together and gripping the carrying medium 11 tightly between them.
My improved construction provides a durable and simple attachment for the installation of a separable fastening member and while I have illustrated and described a specific embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereby because the scope of my invention is best defined by the following claims.
Claims:
1. A separable snap fastener member having a head, a depressed portion provided in said head as an integral part thereof, said depressed portion having a bottom for upsetting the shank of an attaching member, said bottom being convex in cross-section facing toward the head, a base provided by said fastener member and a part secured to said base and having means located directly beneath the bottom of said depressed portion and adapted to be engaged by the upset shank of the attaching member when upset by the inner surface of said curved bottom to prevent separation of the attaching member from the snap fastener member.
2. A two-piece snap fastener stud member comprising a socket-engaging part having a head, a neck and a base portion, a central depressed portion formed in said head and having a curved bottom which curves upwardly toward the open end of said depressed portion and a plate secured within the base of said socket-engaging part and having an aperture through which the shank of an attaching member may pass to be upset by said curved bottom and means formed as a part of said plate to receive the upset portion of said shank thereby to secure the, members together.
