Description

May 17, 1932. J F, HOWE 1,859,143
WIRE ROPE TH'IMBLE Filed May 27. 1931 M087 c507: J4Mf5 Foe/955 Hon 5 Patented May 17, 1932 UNITED STATES .ZPATEN-T OFFICE JAMES FORREST HOWE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSI GNOB TO THE AMERI- CAN STEEL AND WIRE COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY wmi: ROPE THIMBLE Application filed Kay 27,
This invention relates to rope thimbles and has for its object the provision of a novel form of squeezer ring to enclose the rope and a' novel means for securing the ring to the thimble body so as to form a substantially integral structure.
Heretofore the squeezer rings have generally been formed in one piece, which necessitated their being threaded on the rope before it was spliced and before assembling it on the thimble body. The rings generally provided heretofore had a smooth interior surface and were telescoped over the lower end of the thimble body and secured in position by rivets or pins. In use, the ropes passing over the thimble and through the squeezer ring spread outwardly under tension and "if the spread was unequal a shearing strain was delivered to the rivets or pins. The present invention provides means for releasing the means for securing the squeezer rings to the thimble body of this shearing strain and for delivering this strain directly from the squeezer ring to the thimble body.
2 In the drawings:
Figure 1 is .a sectional side elevation through,a rope thimble constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on the 80 line IIII of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevation showin the squeezer ring welded in position.
Figure 4 is a plan of the assembled squeezer ring.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the eye-piece or thimble body 2 is provided with the usual. groove 3 to receive the rope or cable A.
A two-piece squeezer ring 4 is provided on the inner end of the eye or body 2. The ring 4 is preferably divided on a line intermediate the ends of the rope groove 3 in the body 2 and each part of the ring 4 is provided with lugs 5 adapted to be engaged snugly in recesses 6 in the opposite side of the body or eye 2. The ring 4 encloses the rope, being grooved at 7 and flared at 8 so as to permit a spread of the rope beyond the thimble without wearing or cutting the rope, as would be 1931. Serial No. 540,475.
the case if the ring grooves were straight and terminated in a sharp edge.
, The ring.4 may be secured to the body or eye by any suitable means but is preferably Welded at spots,- as indicated at 10, thus forming a substantially integral structure.
By providing the ring 4 in two parts it may be slipped into position after the rope or cable is assembled, thereby avoiding the necessity of threading the rope or cable through the ring prior to assembling.
The lugs 5-serve to deliver strains or stresses caused by the spreading of the rope or cable 7 directly to-the eye or body 2, thus preventing any shearing action of the means securing the ring 4 and body 2 together, such as the welds 10.
While I have 7 shown and described one specific embodiment of my inventionit will be understood that Ido not wish to be limited thereto since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A rope thimble having a rope groove therein and a squeezer ring secured to' said thimble, said squeezer ring having rope grooves at each end provided with outwardly flaring lower ends to permit a spread of the rope mounted on said thimble, said squeezer ring consisting of a two-part ring enclosing the inner end of the thimble, said ring being divided on a line between the ends of the rope groove and each of the arts of said ring being provided with lugs ad acent their abutting ends; and said thlmble being provided with recesses to receive said lugs, said lugs fitting snugly within said recesses so as to deliver the stresses caused by the spread of the rope outwardly against the squeezer ring to the thimble.
2. A rope thimble having a rope groove therein and a squeezer ring secured to said thimble, said squeezer ring having rope grooves at each end provided with outwardly flaring lower ends to permit a spread of the rope mounted onsaid thimble, said squeezer ring consisting of a two-part ring enclosing the inner end of the thimble, said ring being divided on a line between the ends of the 109 ring rope groove and each of the parts of said being welded to said thinlble and being provided with lugs adjacent their abuttin ends, and said thimble being provided wit recesses to receive said lugs said lugs fitting snugly within said recesses so as to deliver the stresses caused by the spread of the rope outwardly a ainst the squeezer ring direct to the thimb e, thereby relieving said welded connections. I
3. A rope thimble having rope groove 7 therein and a squeezer ring secured to said thimble, said squeezer ring "havingrope grooves at each end provided with outwardly aring lower ends to permit'a spread of the rope mounted on said thimble, said squeezer ring consisting of a twoartring enclosing the inner end of the thim 1e, said ring being divided on a line between the ends of the rope groove and each of the arts of said ring being Welded to said thimb c after being as-- sembled in position so as to .forlna substantially integral construction.
4. A rope thimble having a ropegroove therein and a squeezer ring secured to said thimble, said squeezer ring having rope grooves at each end provided with outwardly flaring lower ends to permit a spread of the rope mounted-0n said thimble, said squeezer ring consisting of a ring enclosin theuinner end of the thimble and secured to 51c thimble between the rope grooves by welding to provide a substantially integral construction.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand. a
JAMES FOBRE ST HOWE.
