V DOOR BUFFER Filed Feb. 23, 1928 E =Z 175512527 22252" 2% w mega Patented May 17, 1932 El STATES PATEN noon BnFFER Application filed February 23, 1928. Serial No. 256,347.
so that the exact amount of projection of- 16 head from the casing may be regulated or adjusted, as required.
Further objects are to provide a buffer which is formed from a tubular casing with an inwardly pressed annular flange and an outwardly pressed bead adjacent its outer end, the bead limiting the insertion into the hole in the door casing and the annular flange limiting the outward motion of a spring pressed plunger, and to associate with this spring pressed plunger a striking head spaced from the plunger by a plurality of removable washers so that the exact projection of of bufler for doors has been provided by this the head may be accurately adjusted by the removal or insertion of washers.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view showing the buffer in place and the door closed;
Figure 2 is a view corresponding to F igure 1 showing the door partly opened;
Figure 3 is a sectional View through the bufier showing it in position.
Referringto the drawings, it will be seen that an automobile door 1 has been indicated as associated with a door casing 2. The casing or the door may be provided with a hole for the reception of the buffer. As an example, the casing 2 has been shown as provided with a hole 8 into which the buffer is driven. This buiier consists of a tubular casing 4 which has an inturned annular flange 5 at its forward end and an outwardly turned head 6. The bead 6 limits the insertion of the casing 4 and insures the correct positioning of the butter. Within the casing, a
' plunger 7 is positioned and is provided with i an outwardly projecting stem 8. This plunger is pressed outwardly by means of a spring 9 and the inner end of the spring bears against an inturned flange 10 which may be spun or pressed inwardly from the body portion of the shell or casing 4. The stem 8 is provided with a threaded aperture which receives the threaded stem 11 of the striking head 12. Preferably, this striking head is knurled to provide a roughened surface sothat it may be readily gripped between the thumb and finger of the operator. Between the head 12 and the outer end of the stem 8, a plurality of removable Washers 13 are carried.
These washers serve as spacers to space the head 12 from the outer end of the stem 8 any desired amount. Obviously, for doors which have different spacings from the door 7o casing, this adjustable feature is highly desirable as it adapts the butter to any type of door. For example, when there is a small space between the door and door casing, only a few washers need be used, a larger space requiring'a larger number of washers.
It will be seen therefore that a novel form invention which is of the utmost simplicity, which is extemely rugged, which may be cheaply manufactured, and which is easy to install.
It will also be seen that the buffer provides a substantial cushioning efi'ect for the door .and prevents slamming of the door.
Although the invention has been described in'considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be deter- 5 mined as claimed.
I claim:
1. A door bufier comprising a casing, a plunger slidably carried by and projecting from said casing and having a threaded hole, '95
a head having a threaded shank screwed into said hole, awasher located on said shank between said head and the outer end of said plunger for regulating the distance between said plunger and head, a spring disposed be- 51% tween said casing and plunger for urging said plunger outwardly, and means for limiting the outward motion of said plunger.
2. A door buffer comprising an integral casing formed of sheet metal having an outwardly folded portion forming an external flange to limit the insertion of the casing in a receiving hole, the upper layer of said outwardly folded portion projecting inwardly and forming an inner flange, a plunger slidable in said casing and having an integral annular flange at its inner end adapted to engage the inwardly projecting flange of said casing to limit the outward motion of said plunger, a spring urging said plunger outwardly, an adjustable head having a shank threaded into said plunger, and a washer located on said shank between the outer end of said plunger and said head for regulating the distance of said head from said plunger.
3. A door buifer comprising an integral casing formed of sheet metal having an outwardly folded portion forming an external flange to limit the insertion of the casing in a receiving hole, the upper layer of said outwardly folded portion projecting inwardly and forming an inner flange, a plunger slidable in said casing and having an integral annular flange disposed within said casing and adapted to engage the inwardly projecting flange of said casing to limit the outward movement of said plunger, a spring urging said plunger outwardly and bearing directly against said plunger, and an adjustable head having a shank threaded into said plunger, and a washer located on said shank between said head and the outer end of said plunger for regulating the distance of said head from said plunger.
4. A door bufler comprising a thimble provided with an internal and external flange adjacent its mouth, the external flange serving to limit the insertion of the thimble in a receiving aperture, a plunger slidable in said casing and having an annular flange at its inner end adapted to engage said internal flange to limit the outward movement of said plunger, a spring urging said plunger outwardly, an adjustable head having a shank threaded into said plunger, and a washer located on said shank between the outer end of said plunger and said head for regulating the distance of said head from said plunger.
5. A door buffer comprising a casing, a plunger slidably carried by and projecting from said casing, an adjustable head having a shank threaded into the end of said plunger, a washer located on said shank between said head and the outer end of said plunger for regulating the distance between said plunger and said head, said washers being of the same diameter as said plunger to allow them to enter said casing, a spring disposed between said casing and plunger for urging said plunger outwardly, and means for limiting the outward motion of said plunger.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in
the county of Milwaukee and State of Wis- 1 consin.
EDWARD J. DEGUENTHER.
