This invention relates to improvements in spinning and twisting machines and has for its object to provide a novel mechanism for driving a plurality of spindles disposed in rows on opposite sides of the machine, together with means for automaticall keeping a predetermined tension on the driving belt without affecting the position of the belt with respect to the spindles actuated thereby.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which ig. 1 represents a detail side elevation, partly in section, of one end of a spinning and twisting machine, having two decks of spindles superposed in a frame and my im-- proved driving and tension mechanism applied to each deck;

The end frame of the machine is denoted by 1, and the. upper and lower pairs of rods or pipes denoted by 2, 3, which are secured to the end frames at 4, 5 respectively. The pairs of rods 2, 3 are disposed on opposite sides of the frame and extend throughout the length'of the machine. It is to be understood that a similar end frame serves to sup- .port the opposite end of the several rods, etc.
An upright 6 is spaced from the end frame 1 and connected thereto by horizontally disposed rails 7, 8, 9, 10, of which one end of each rail is fixed to the upri' ht 6, while the other end is secured to the en frame 1. The rails are disposed horizontall 'in upper and lower pairs, of which the rai s 7, 8 are substantially in alinement with the upper pairs of rods or pipes 2, 3 and the rails 9, 1O arranged to aline with the lower pairs of rods or pipes2, 3. - A carrier is disposed between each pair of rails and arranged to slide lengthwise toward and away from the upright 6 and end frame 1. This carrier comprises a plate 11 havi a shaft 12 journaled in bearings 13, 14 at one end of the plate and a shaft 15 mounted in 17 at the other end of the plate. The shaft 12 is provided on its outer ends with anti-friction rollers 18, 19, while the shaft 15 carries pinions 20, 21.
Each pair of rails is formed with oppositely disposed upper flanges 22, 23 and oppositely arranged lower flanges 24, 25, between which upper and lower flanges the rollers 18, 19 and pinions 20,21 of the carrier move. are provided with racks with the pinions 20, 21,

A motor 30 is suspended from the plate 11, by means of bolts -1 and its driving pulley 32 disposed above the plate 11 in position to 1 26, 27 which coact receivea driving belt 33. This belt 33 is 8.1-
7 while the other end has a loo-p 43 arranged to receive a weight 44 which depends therefrom. It will be understood that the shaft ranged .to ass through the end frame 1, around gui e ulleys 34, carried by suitable brackets xed to the rods or pipes 2, 3, respectively, and then lengthwise through the machine inposition to frlctionally engage the spindles 36, each of which is mounted in a bearing 37 carried by supports 38 secured to the rods or pipes 2, 3 by bolts 39.
i In order to maintain the driving belt at aconstant tension, the shaft 15 is extended out wardly so as to project through an elongated 1 slot 40 in the rails 7, 9 in position to receivega' counterbalance, in the present instance, in the form of a pulley 41 provided with a strap 42, one end of which is fixed to the pulley 4'1,

From the foregoing it will be seen that a constant tension will be applied to the belt 33 through the weight 44tending to exert its pressure on the pulley 41 through the strap 42 apd hence to the shaft 15 which, in turn,
parting from the spirit and scope of my invention; and hence, I do not intend to be limited to the details herein shown and described, except as they may be included in the claims What I claim is 1. The combination wlth a s inning and twistin machine having an en frame and a spind e driving belt of an auxiliary frame secured to said end' frame, longitudinal guide rails and racks on said auxiliary frame, a carrier having a shaft provided with pinions thereon arran ed to coact with said racks, a motor and its riving pulley mounted on said carrier, and means carried by said shaft for actuating the pinions to move the carrier, motor and its drivingpulley to adjust the tension of the belt. i

The combination with'a s inning and twisting machine having an end frame and a spindle drivingbelt of an auxiliar I frame secured to said end frame, longltudinal guide rails and racks on said auxiliary frame, a carrier having'a shaft provided with pinions thereon arranged to coact with said racks, a motor and its driving pulley mounted neoazee on said carrier, and a counterbalance carried by said shaft for actuatin the pinions to rails and racks on said auxiliary frame, a carrier having anti-friction rollers slidable on said guide rails, a shaft journaled in the carrier and provided with pinions arranged m posltion to coact with said racks, a motor and itsv driving pulley mounted on the carr ier, and means carried by said shaft for actuating the pinions to move the carrier,
motor and its driving pulley to adjust the tension of the belt.

The combination with a spinning and twisting machine having an end frame and a spindle driving belt of an auxiliar frame secured to said end frame, longitu inal guide rails and racks on said auxiliary frame, a carrierihaving anti-friction rollers 'slidable on said guide rails, a shaft journaled in the carrier and provided with pinions arranged in position to coact with said racks,'a motor and its driving pulley mounted on the carrier, and a counterbalance carried by said shaft for actuating the pinions to move the carrier, motor and its driving pulley to adjust the tension of the belt.

A belt tightener for twisting machines comprising a pulley, a. motor connected with said pulley for driving the same, reciprocating means for su porting said motor and'pulley, abracket or supporting said .reciprocatmg means, a rack positioned substantiallyparallel to said bracket and to thedirection of movement of said reciprocating means, a rod carried by said reciprocating means a pinion mounted on said rod and continually meshing with said rack, and a weighted member acting on said pinion for 'ving the inion a tendency to rotate wheresa1d reciprocating means will automatica 1y move the motor and the pulley in a di rection for causing tension to be brought to bear on a belt mounted on the pulley.
6. A belt tightener for twisting machines comprising a ulley, a motor connected with said ,pulley or driving it, reciprocating means for supporting said motor and pulley,
a fixed rack positioned substantially parallel to the movementof said supporting means, a rotatable pinion carried by said supporting means and meshing with said rack, an

A belt tightener for twisting machines comprising a said pulley or driving it, reciprocating means for supporting saidmotor and pulley, a pair of fixed racks positioned substantially parallel to the movement of said supporting means, a rotatable pinion for each rack carried by saidsupporting means and meshing with said racks, and means acting on said supporting means for normally giving the pinions a tendency to rotate whereby said reciprocating means will automatically move the motor and pulley in a direction for causing tension to be brought to bear on a belt mounted on the pulley.

A belt tightener comprising a drivin I pulley, a motor directly connected with sai pulley, a reciprocating carriage supporting said motor, a bracket for supportlng said carriage, a pinion rotatably mounted on said carriage, a rack meshing with said pinion, said rack being carried by said bracket, and means connecting said pinion whereby as the means moves in one irection said inion will be. rotated, and through the coactlon of said rack, said carriage and the parts carried in one direction said pinions will be rotated 1st day of October,
and caused to move along said racks for shiftin the position of said carriage, motor and pu ley.
10. A belt tightener including a pair of supporting brackets, each bracket having a slotand a pair of parallel guiding auxiliar brackets forming a track, a stationary rack secured to each of said brackets, a carria e having a plurality of traction wheels, said traction wheels beingfitted into said tracks and guided thereby, said carriage having a rod extending through one of said slots, an electric motor carried by said carriage, a driving pulley supported and driven by said motor, a pair of pinions mounted on said rod and meshing continually with said racks, and means for giving the pinions a tendency to rotate in one direction.
