Description

PatentedMay 17, 192
Uui'rtzn STATEs PATENT v 6Fl-4g:
ommen n. wien, or ritrrsnunen, rENNsYLvANfA, nssreuoa To cnncInLn STEEL conm or Amica, a conrgm'rron or NEW Jnnsnrl rnowsnnnn I .Application iisd october 9 Heretnf'ore plowshares have commonly been made of so-ealled soft-center steel,
'meaning essentially a laminated composite carbon content which is hardened. In such prior soft-center plowshares theV inner lowcarbon steel layer has `extended throughout the length of the share; leaving the said in` ner layer exposedalong the edge of the nose and at the nose-point, -altho h in some cases thin pieces or Shins of har steel have been welded above and below, and sometimes on opposite sides of, the npse of the share. In al1 such cases the hardened steel outer layers (one or both) at the nose, and particularly at and near the' point of the nose, lwear away more or le rapidly, thus exposing the inner soft layer directlyto by stones in the ground, and then the plowshare is soon worn ont. It is the object of the present invention to improve the plowshare in the respects, and thus to provide one a naterially l'ong- 1929. Serial N0. 898,277.
being indicated by the numeral' 2, and the:v high-'carbon envelopel by the numeral '3.'
Heretofore'in the manufacture of a plowl share from a composite steel plate such'as is shownin Figure 1, ithas been the practice -to-shear oii, along the dotted lines 4, 4, the1 opposlte solid high-carbon edge portions 5, 5v
of the composite plate, thus leaving the opposlte edges ofthe inner low-carbon layer 2 exposed, and then cut the blank for the plowshare from the -sheared plate. In the manun I facture of my improvedv plowshare -by the procedure now being described I do not shear away the high- carbon edges 5, 5, but I leave the composite plate 1 intact atl its edges, and
I cut out of itv (as shown by the shaded orl tions and by thedotted lines 6) the bla l7,
one of which is shown in Figure2, with *the4 -edges of the low-carbon inner layer 2 exposed upon three sides, and its end taken from the solid high-carbon edge portion 5 of the composite plate 1. The blank 7 is then forged in the usual way to form the lowshare 8 `shown in Fi ures 3 and 4, the igh-carbon "solid edge 5 orming the nose 5 of the plowshare, the nose-point 9 and the lower blade 10 er eeetive life, while not impairing the being sharpened, and the plowshare then submitted to the hardening operation. There is'thus formed a lowshare having the solid pelspectl` `ve view of a plowshare embod g the invention, which has been formed om the blanl'r shown in Figure 2; and Figure 4.
is a. view in cross-section taken on the line IV--IV of Figure 3. It understood igures 1 and2areonly illustrative, and no attem pt at accurate scaling4 has been ma e.
The composite steel plate lof ,has
i been rolled down from a composite mgot having Ta low-carbon core and a envelope ofhigher carbon steel, as 1s a well known-practice, the low-carbon layerA hard steel nose 5 forward of the dotted line 11, Figure 3) and the rearwardly extendin laminated steel bOdy`, composed of the so and tough center 2.and the opposite hard faces 3, 3.
upon the'inner side face of the nose portion o the plowshare aheel or so-called gunwale It has been the practice heretoforeto weld.
12, the'ilange 13 of which has been only of a widthsuicient to giveA a firm weld. Itis a part ofthe present invention to extend the width of this welded flange portion 13A of-the '-mwale beyond the. dotted line 11 of theont edge of the soft center2 of the plowshare, to aboutithe ,extent indicated the dottedline 14 of Figure 3, so that' it will@ reinforce vthe union between the hard steel nose and the front edge of' the inner layer of the plowshare. L v p The terms low-carbon or soft steel and high-carbon o r hard steel, are used herein in a relative isense only. The so-called soft center 2 of the laminated metal plate metal layer. The portions 3 and 5 of the plowshare will have a carbon content higher than that of the center layer 2, and consevmgquently will be harder, being preferably gral illing projecting rearwardly from Said may be of iron, or of any Steel so low in carbon contentl as not to be hardened or only slightly hardene'dby heat treatment, so that it will constitute a tough supporting inner hardened by heat treatment' inthe usual way.
No claim is made herein tothe method of manufacture of lowshares described the foregoing speci cation since the method is made the subject of a separate, divisional application for Letters Patent, led by me on September 3rd, 1931, Serial No. 560,906.
l claim as myuinvention:
A plowshare comprising a solid nose and rearward y projecting opposite wings formed,v
of hard steel, a relatively softA metal intei* nose between said wings, and a gunwale having a flange united to aside face of said nose and extending rearwardly beyond the. line of jiincture of said nose with said soft metal filling.
In testimony 'whereof have hereunto set l my hand. Y a
CLARENCE E. WISE.
