Description
y 1932- c. G. DEWHIRST 1,858,140
' CHART Filed Oct. 8, 1930 [bra 6202071276? IN ENTOR ATTORNEY Patented May 10, 1932 PATENT OFFICE CORA GRACE DEWHIRST, OF PAYSON, ILLINOIS CHART Application filed October 8, 1930. Serial No. 487,300.
This invention relates to certain new and useful methods of teaching music from preliminary stages.
One of the principal objects of the invention consists of a form of abacus having slides in the forms of notes, sharps, flats and the like and from which different signatures and selections may be built up.
With the above and other objects in view,
'- the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the dual wires or guides for the abacus showing a fiat symbol mounted for shifting motion thereon.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 show- F ing one of the colored notes mounted for sliding motion.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character indicates generally the frame structure of an elongated form of abacus having a backing 11 upon one side faced with legends or other symbols in the nature of treble clefs and has clefs as well as the respective lines upon which the different notes are lo 3 drawings that the treble clef and bass clef may be readily distinguished between the lines. The members 14 and 15, symbolic of sharps and flats, are provided with s aced ears 16 upon the inner sides thereo and which are bent over and about the guide wires 12 and 13 in the manner suggested in Figure 3 of the drawings whereby the sharps and flats may be slidably positioned upon the Wires and shifted to occupy different positions in the length of the particular musical selection. The notes, generally indicated as at 17, shaped in conformity to that of the different notes employed in musical compositions are provided with parallel passages to accommodate the respective wires 12 and 13 whereby the notes may be arranged in any number and in different positions upon the wires to make up the desired selection.
The notes are also of different colors upon each of the several lines of the contemplated chart and each color represents a certain note.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A musical notation device comprising a frame, a backing crossing one side thereof, clef characters upon said backing indicating treble and bass staffs spaced wires stretched across the frame and said clef characters are spaced from the backing, each alternate wire being of one shade to represent lines of the stafi and the intervening wires being of a differentshade indicating spaces of the staff and note bodies slidable upon the wires.
2. A musical notation device comprising a frame, a backing crossing one side thereof, clef characters upon said backing indicating treble and bass staffs spaced wires stretched across the frame and said clef characters are spaced from the backing, each alternate wire being of one shade to represent lines of the staff and the intervening wires being of a different shade indicating spaces of the staff and note bodies slidable upon the wires, and sharp and flat symbols detachably mounted upon the wires.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
COR-A GRACE DEWHIRST.
