Description

y 1.932. G. VIRNEBURG 1,857,989
WASHING IMPLEMENT Filed March 6, 1930 INVENTOR.
A TTORNEYS.
lfatented May 10, 1932 siren stares? PATENT OFFICE GEORGE VIRNEB'C'BG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WASHING MPLEMENT Application filed March 6,
' a users hand and be retained in position while in use.
Another object is to provide suchimplement with means for holding a piece of soap, so that when said implement is being rubbed against the users body foam will be formed on the outside thereof.
A still further object of this invention is to construct the implement of an elastic material in form of a tubular body so that owing to its elasticity it can be applied to hands of different sizes and will be retained thereon by friction, thereby eliminating any special fastening means. Still another object of this invention is to construct the means for holding the soap, in form of a pocket on the inner face of the implement and to make said pocket of a nonporous material, so that the soap when contained in said pocket will not-form foam on the hand. a
And a still further object is to so shape the tubular body that the latter can be easily and convenientl turned-inside out to permit the insertion o a fresh piece of soap, and that while applied to the hand it will permit free movement of the fingers and wrist of the hand.
With theseand other objects in view my invention consists substantially in the novel combination, arrangement and-construction of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification and in which similar references denote corresponding parts Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of my device;
Fi 2 is a cross sectional elevation along line 22 of 1;
Fig. 3 is a si e elevation partially in sec tion of my device; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one method of making my implement.
Referriaigto the drawings Figs. 1-3 in- 1930. Serial No. 433,528.
elusive, my device maybe constructed of a pieceof expandible material 10-such as rubber sponge or the like which is adapted to be formed into a tube by connecting opposite edges 11 and 12 either by gluing vulcanizing or otherwise suitably fastening the same. The portion of the tube where the joint is made is shorter than the opposite portion 13 of the said tubular body and the ends of said body taper from said joint to said opposite face. The body 10 is made porous by providing it with a plurality of slits or openings 14 for a purpose hereinafterspecified.
The interior face of said body if made of rubber sponge may be covered over its en- 6 tirety with a non-porous thin rubber sheet 15 through which extend the slits 1 1. Internally of said tubular body and mounted on said sheet 15 over said openings 14 is mounted a sheet of flexible non-porous material 16 of sheet rubber, rubberized cloth or the like which may be fastened by gluing of its edges to the inner face of said sheet 15or in any other way. A portion of the edge of said sheet is left unglued as at 16 so that 7 acake of soap S or the like may be inserted into the pocket formed by said sheet 16.
. In order to provide a suitable rubbing and massaging surface which will be free from soap, 1 provide the member 17 which may be of similar material to that of said tubular body or of any other suitable material and of any desired shape or size. The said member may be suitably fastened to said tubular body as for instance by gluing it or in any other Way, over the joint between the edges lland 12 of said member 10, said member serving thereby incidentally also as an additional joint between said edges.
In use my device is operated as follows The tubular body may be turned inside out, soap inserted into the pocket formed by said sheet 16 and turned back to normal. Then the hand is inserted into the tubular body with the palm over said pocket. The i on. If now said body is wetted and rubbed over anything such as the bodv or other surfaces, foam from soap suds forms and is extruded through the openings 14 onto the outer face of said tube and the body or other surface may be washed with said foam and is rubbed and massaged at the same time. If further massage Without foam is desired the surface of the body being cleansed may be rinsed and the member 17 which is free from such foam may be used. Since the pocket forming member 16 is non-porous practically none of the foam will form on the hand of the user as the latter is in no direct contact with the soap.
The fact that the edges of the tubular body are tapered affords freer movement of the hand and fingers in said body and adds to the flexibility of the device. After use the device may be rinsed and used over again.
To facilitate the manufacturing of the device in large quantities and reduce the cost thereof and eliminate waste of material the following method may be used.
A long tube 18 'may be initially cast or formed and subsequently cut up into individbular body of porous material whose ends are cut on a bias along planes which intersect, an inner lining of non-porous material for said body, and a non porous sheet mounted on said lining to form a soap pocket between itself and said lining, said lining having perforations beneath said non-porous pocket forming sheet which also extend through said porous body whereby soap foam may pass from said pocket to the exterior of said tubular body.
5. A washing implement comprising a tubular body of sponge rubber whose ends are cut on a bias along planes which intersect, an inner lining of non-porous rubber covering the entire inner wall of said body, and a nonporous rubber sheet mounted on said lining to form a soap pocket between itself and said lining, said lining having slits beneath said non-porous pocket forming sheet which also extend through said porous body whereby soap foam may pass from said pocket to the exterior of said tubular body.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GEORGE VIRNEBURG.
ual sections as shown by the dotted lines 19 (Fig. 4). lhe individual sections may then be'perforated or slitted andprovided with pockets as the device shown in Figs. 1-3 in-' elusive.
My device may be modified in many ways and I do not wish to be limited to the details shown and described.
What I claim is 1. A washing implement comprising a tubular body of sponge rubber, an inner lining of non-porous rubber covering the entire inner wall of said tubular body, and a nonporous sheet of rubber mounted on said lining to form a soap pocket between itself and said lining, said lining having perforations beneath said non-porous pocket forming sheet which also extend through said porous bodyi whereby soap foam may pass from sai pocket to the exterior of said tubular body.
2. A washing implement comprising a tu\ bular body of porous material, an inner lining of non-porous material covering the inner wall of said body, and a non-porous sheet mounted on said lining to form a soap pocket between itself and said lining. said lining having erforations beneath said non-porous pocket orming sheet whereby soap foam may pass from said pocket to the exterior of said tubular body.
3. A washing implement comprising a tubular body of porous material, an inner lining of non-porous rubber covering the inner wall of said body and a non-porous rubber sheet mounted on said lining to form a soap pocket Jetween itself and said lining, said lining having perforations beneath said non-porous pocket forming sheet whereby soap foam may pass from said pocket to the exterior of said tubular body.
