RI, .ASSIGNOR TO MISSISSIPPI GLASS COM- A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK A'PPARATUS FOR MAKING WIRE GLASS Application mea october 9, 1930. serial No. 487,408.
This invention lpertains to the manufacture of sheet glass reinforced by wire mesh, and is particularly adapted to the manufacture of wire glass by the continuous process. An object of the invention is to feed the wirev mesh into the molten metal at a point close to a forming pass in order that the wire may be accurately positioned in the metal.
the lwire must travel in the molten metal before reaching the pass, in order to more accurately position the wire in the sheet.
Further and other objects and advantages will be apparent from the specification and l5 claims, and from the accompanying drawings which illustrate whatis now considered the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows.a vsomewhat diagrammatic view of the invention Fig. 2 is a `cros .of Fig. 1.
Molten metal 10 flows from furnace 12 over lip 14 onto roll 16, to be carried thereby to the left under ate 18 by which a preliml5 inary sheet 20 o? predetermined thickness is formed. This sheet afterwards passes through the final forming pass between lower roll 16 and upper roll 22, to emerge therefrom as sheet 24, which is thereafter treated 0 in the usual manner. Any surplus metal passing under gate 18 accumulates as a ball 25. The lip 14 and gate 18 form the dis'- charge throat for the furnace and as clearly disclosed, these parts cooperate with the roll i 16 to determine effectively the amount of metal discharged through the pass 16-18.
The reinforcing wire mesh 26 is fed by bristle roller 27 over bar 28 an 8O into molten metal 10at a point between lip 14 and roll 16, thence under gate 18 as part of the preliminary sheet 20, to finally emerge as part of sheet 24.
Bar 28 has a boss 32 lengthwise thereof, into which are inserted stems 34 of guide lingers 30. Bar 28 is adjustably supported at its ends by plates 36 -attachedto frame 38 by bolts 40 passing through slots 42 of brackets 36. Bar 28 is an larly adjustable in brackets 36 by means o set screws 44 and 46 threaded through ears 48 and 50 and abuts-section on the line 2-2 ing -pass much closer to lip 14 Another object is to reduce the distance' d guide fingersf boss 32. By this rotated to simultanefingers 30 in order to olten metal 10 at any ting opposite sides o means bar 28 may be ously position all guide feed wire 26 into the m desired point.
By the use of a gate 18 to liminary sheet, it is possible t 55 form the preo place a formthan is possible when a roll is used to form the pass, as will be readily apparent by comparison of the relative shapes of gate 18 and roll 22 in the drawings.
From the above description it will be appreciated that fingers 30 support and guide the wire mesh to a point closely adjacent metal 10 between lip 14 and roll 16, and that the wire almost immediately after leaving fingers 30 passes into control of the pass betweengate 18 and roll 16.
The space between roll 16 and li course, restricted suiiicientl of metal therethrough.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiment herein villustrated and described, but may be used in other ways without departure from its spirit as defined by the claims which follow.
I claim- 1.'In a p 14 is, of y to prevent flow pparatus for forming reinforced wire glass, in combination, a rotatable roll, a lip over which molten metal is fed onto the upper surface of said roll, a gate spaced above said roll cooperating therewith to form a pass between said gate and said roll, and meansy for guiding wire mesh between said lip and roll into said metal and toward said pass, substantially as described.
In apparatus for forming reinforced wire glass, in combination, a rotatable roll, a lip over which molten metal is 'fed onto said roll, a gate spaced from said roll to form a pass whereby a metal 'sheet of predetermined thickness is formed between said gate and said roll, and means between said lip and said roll for uiding wire mesh into said sheet as said sheet 1s being formed, whereby a sheet of wire glass is formed supported by said roll.
3. In apparatus for forming reinforced wire glass, in combination, a. rotatable roll, a lip over which molten metal is fed onto said roll, a gate spaced from said roll to form tween the roll and iin a metal sheet of predeterapass` whereby mined thickness 1s formed between said gate and said roll, ileans between said lip and said roll for guiding wire mesh into said sheet as said sheet is being formed, whereby a. sheet of wire glass is formed supported by said roll, and a second roll adjacent said first roll whereby a roll pass is formed between saidrolls, to receive the sheet from the pass between the gate and roll.
14. In apparatus for forming sheet wire g ass charge throat formed in part by a gate, a roll spaced rom and cooperating with said ate to form a pass whereby a sheet of preetermined thickness is formed between the Y'gate and roll, and means for guiding wire mesh directly into the metal discharged from said throat and into said pass.
5. In apparatus for forming sheet wire glass, in'combinatlon, a spaced from and cooperatin with said gate to form a pass, a lip on the4 a throat wall, and means for guiding wire mesh beneath said lip and into the metal beate. 6. In apparatus or forming sheet wire lass, in combination, a furnace, a roll located low the discharge throat of said furnace, a gate s aced from and cooperating with said ro l to orm a. pass and control the discharge of metal from the furnace whereby a sheet of predetermined thickness is formed between the ate and roll, and means for guiding` wire mes into the metal in said pass. p In testimony whereof I hereto aiix my signature.
