This invention relates to a metal plating device and more particularly to an electrolytic weight sealing device for scales using counter weights.
In general practice it is customary to cast the above so-called counter weights a trifle over weight and then either by drilling or some other suitable method the casting is machined, thus gradually reducing its weight until it is of the proper or exact weight. It is practically impossible to cast a 'counter weight accurately, hence the reason for theslight over weight in casting and the subsequent machining process. A considerable amount of time is required to reduce the casting to its proper or exact weight in that it has to be Weighedafter each drilling or machining operation as there is no Way of telling how much or how little of the metal is to be removed during the reducing process. In other Words, after a certain amount of the metal has been drilled or machined, the casting is weighed and if found tobe still over Weight, more of the metal is removed. Also there is a danger of removing too much of the metal resulting either in the loss of the casting or if the casting has been reduced by drilling, the holes may be plugged with lead until the exact or proper value has been reached, which obviously requires a considerable amount of time.
According to the present invention I propose to produce counter Weights of the roper values by casting them a trifle under weight and then increasing their weight by electroplating them until they reach their correct values, thereby saving considerable time as well as assuring an accurate sealing on all castings.
An object of my invention is to provide a device which will seal counter weights automatically.
Another object is to provide a metal plating device which will automatically seal weights at predetermined values.
Another object is to provide a device for automatically applying metal to counter balancing elements and automatically stopping the process when the counter balanclngelement attains a definite weight.
A further object is to provide a device by which a counter balancing element may be subjected to a weight increasing process for a definite predetermined period.
Various other objects and advantages of my invention will be obvious from the following particular description of one form of mechanism embodying the invention or from an inspection of the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of my weight sealing device, parts being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing a modified form of the invention.
Referring to Fig. 1 one form of my weight sealing device is illustrated. The device comprises a container 10 into which a solution of copper sulphate may be contained or any other plating solution suitable for the material being plated. A bracket 11 fixed to the upper right end of the container carries in its upper end an agate 12 upon which a knife edge 14 carried by a balancing beam 15 is mounted.
An adjustable weight 16 is provided on one end of the beam for properly adjusting it as'will be presently described. A knife edge 17 is fixed to the opposite end of the beam 15 upon which is mounted a handle or hook 18.
An arm 19 pivotally mounted above the knife edge 14 is adapted to rock freely about its pivot between a set of limit brackets 19'. The arm 19 cooperates with a latch 20 which latch is biased by a spring 21 into osition to hold contacts 24 and 25 closed. n adjusting stud 23 mounted on the upper right end of the container may be provided as astop for the beam 15. In order to seal a casting which has been cast a trifle under weight it is suspended upon the hook of handle 18. The weight 16 is then adjusted to a'predetermined position along the threaded portion of the beam 14, the position being predetermined in,
accordance with the desired weight of the casting. When inthis position the casting will be immersed in the plating solution as shown in the figure. A switch is then closed establishing a circuit from the positive side of the line through an anode 27, through the plating solution, through the casting 26, through hook 18, through beam 15, through contacts 24 and 25 now closed, through wire 28, back to the negative side of the line. During the flow of current metal is electrolytically deposited upon the casting 26. The beam 15 will become heavier at its left hand end as the metal deposited accumulates on the casting causing the beam to gradually commence to rock counterclockwise. When the casting has fully attained its precise value the beam will be rocked counterclockwise sufficiently to cause the center of balance of the arm 19 to pass to the left hand side of its support so that it will then of its own Weight move to the dotted line position shown in the figure which will in turn move the latch 20 from its heavy line to its dotted line position permitting the contacts 2425 to open.
Referring now to Fig. 2 a modified form of my invention is illustrated. As in Fig. 1 the counter weights are cast below their proper values and then tested and their exact weight ascertained. The castings are then sorted according to their respective weights. The amount of current necessary and the duration of time that each casting is to be subjected to the electroplating process is determined according to the weight of the castin-g. In other words, all castings Weighing Within one ounce of their proper value and all castings weighing within one half ounce or otherwise are separated.
In order to properly seal a casting after it has been tested and its weight ascertained, it is suspended upon the handle 31 as shown in the figure. The amount of current necessary to add suflicient metal to the casting to bring it to its exact or proper value and the duration of time required to do this having been previously determined, the rheostat 32 is then set to indicate the determined amount of current on the ammeter 33 and the time controlled switch 34 is likewise set to control the length of time that the current shall flow. The circuit is then closed and continues to flow until the time switch 32, previously set, automatically opens the circuit at the expiration of the predetermined period at which time the proper amount of metal will have been deposited by the anode 27 upon the casting to bring it to its exact or proper value.
The device as will be noted comprises a .container 29 similar to that of Fig. 1 into which a plating solution is contained. Fixed to theupper left end of the container is a bracket 30 carrying a handle or hook 31 suspended therefrom. The hook 31 is ofa sufficient length to allow a casting when hung thereon to be immersed in the plating solution. A clock or timecontrolled switch 34, an ammeter 33 and a rheostat 32 are'connected in. the circuit for reasons previously set forth.. f
\Vhen a switch is closed a circuit will be established from the positive side of the line,
through the anode 27 casting 26, hook 31,
bracket 30, rheostat 32, ammeter 33, time controlled switch 34 and back to the negative side of the line.
lVhile I have shown and described and pointed out the fundamental novel features of the invention as applied to a single modification it will be understood that various omissions and substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention. I intend to be limited therefore only as indicated by the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A device for sealing counter weights in an electroplating bath, comprising a pivoted lever having a weight on one arm and means for suspending a counter weight immersed in said bath from the other arm of said lever, an electroplating circuit including a circuit closer controlled by said lever to open the circuit when the suspended counter weight counterbalances said weight on the opposite arm of the pivot and mechanical means pivotally attached to said lever-for accelerating the movement of said lever on the counterbalancing operation to insure quick opening of said circuit.
2. A device for sealing counter Weights in an electroplating bath, comprising a pivoted lever having a weight on one arm and means for suspending a counter weight immersed in said bath on the opposite arm of the lever, an electroplating circuit including a circuit closer controlled by a weight element balancingly supported by said lever and adapted to open the circuit when the suspended counter weight counterbalances the weight on the opposite arm of the pivot.
3. A device for sealing counter weights in an electroplating bath, comprising a pivoted lever having a weight on one arm and means for suspending a counter weight immersed in said bath on the opposite arm of the lever, an electroplating circuit including a circuit closer and a weighted element balancingly supported by said lever for accelerating the movement of said lever on the counterbalancing operation and adapted to quickly open said circuit after counterbalancing has occurred.
4. A device comprising an even balance beam having weights connected to opposite arms thereof, and a lever pivoted at a point on a vertical line through the pivot of the beam for selectively adding to the pull on either arm in accordance with the position of the beam.
5. A device comprising an even balance beam carrying weights at both ends thereof, a top heavy lever connected to the beam and selectively inclined towards either end of the beam in accordance with the position of the latter.
6. A device comprising an even balance beam, an electric circuit, contacts for controlling said circuit, and pendulous means carried by the beam for operating said contacts.
7. In device for sealing counterweights and forming them of accurate weight in one 01)- eration,ja Weighing element having means for carrying the counter weight to be sealed, an electroplating circuit for depositing material of indefinite weight on said counter weight, a lever pivotally mounted on said element for suddenly interrupting the circuit, and an extension on said element for actuating said lever when the counter weight and material added thereto reaches a predetermined weight.
8. A' device comprising an even balance beam, an electric circuit, contacts forcontrolling said circuit, a latch for said contacts, a lever having a weighted end pivoted on said beam and adapted .to move as accelerated by'the weighted end to operate said latch when the beam assumes a predetermined position.
