Bymdozh A orney Patented May 3, 1932 PATENT OFFICE CECELIA H. COHEN, OIF IB-ROOKLYN, NEW YORK SAMPLE DISPLAY TAB Application led January 9, 1930. Serial No. 419,629.
This invention relates to improvements in sample display tabs and to the method of making the same.
Heretofore, it has been the practice in mounting sample fabrics upon cards or tabs, to Wrap the material around the card and adhesively secure the fabric thereto. This necessitates the mounting of the fabric on individual cards requiring considerable labor and time as well as a waste of material as the same is applied so as to cover one side of the card with the edges folded back and secured against the rear side. It is, therefore, the primary object of my invention to expedite the manufacture of such sample tabs at a low cost of material and labor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new method of mounting sample fabrics on insert tabs by providing a back mat against which the length of sample fabric is placed, then folding a mask having spaced Awindows therein over the mat and sample fabric, adhesively securing the meeting faces of said mask and mat together, and then cutting the strip or gang-0f tabs loose on a plane intermediate the window openings.
' Another obj ect of the invention is the provision of a sample fabric display tab in which the sample fabric is interposed or sandwiched between tWo layers of cardboard, one of which is provided with a window opening for displaying the color and texture of the sample material.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sample tab having insert tongues on opposite ends thereof, one of the end walls of the window opening being cut to a shape so vthat it co-acts with the walls of the slit or cutout of the mounting sheet to provide an attractive enclosure design for the display Yof the printed color name or stock or catalog number of the particular sample fabric supported thereon.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in a certain novel construction, combination anl arrangement of parts, the vessential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out inthe appended claim and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of a gang of tabs before folding.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the same in folded position.
Figure 3 is a verticallongitudinal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the display tabs per se.
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the .line 5 5 of Figure et.
Figure G is a lfragmentary plan view of a mounting sheet for the tabs shown in Figure 4..
AFigure 7 is a similar view but showing the tabs mounted upon the mounting sheet.
Figure 8 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 8-8 of Figure 7.
Figure 9 is a plan view of a slightly modified form showing adouble gang of tabs before folding.
Figure 10 is a further modification showing the blank from which the tab is formed before folding.
Figure 11 is a horizontal sectional View of the form shown in Figure 10 in a. folded position with a sample fabric secured therein.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, the numeral 10 designates a back mat of cardboard or other like material which is cut to provide transversely disposed end tongues 11 and 12 along opposite sides thereof. The mat 10 may be of any length depending of course upon the number of tabs to be cut from a single strip. Associated with the back mat 10 is a front mask 18, the longitudinal sides of which are provided with spaced opposed tongues 14 and 15, the latter tongues being joined to the tongues 12 of the mat 10 so that all of the tongues 11, 12, lt and 15 are in horizontal alignment. Both the mat 10 and the frontmask 18 are constructed from a single blank of cardboard material cut in a single operation and are foldable one over the other on the scored or folded lines 16 dividing the tongues 12 from the tongues 15. The mask 13 is provided with cutout openings or Windows 17 in alignment with the respective opposed tongues l 14 and 15 and are shown as substantially rectangular in configuration, the end walls of the cutout openings adjacent the tongues 15 being of a shape tor point inwardly for a purpose to be presently explained.
The opposite end of the back mat 10 and mask`13 terminate in cutoff iiaps 18 for a purpose to be hereinafter appreciated. In the drawings I have shown the inner surface of the mat 10 asqprovided wit-han adhesive substance 19 which whenvmoistenedwill cause the inner faces of the back. mask and mat to be secured together after the same have been folded on the scored line 16. In the process of manufacturing the display tabs of the kind herein shown, a piece of sample fabric 20 of the kind to be displayed is placed lengthwise'of the back mat 10, the Ygummed surface having first been moistened, after which the gummed surface of the mask 13 is Y likewise moistened and the said mask'folded 0n the fold line 16V so as to overlie the back y' mask, and when v.pressure is .applied to the lines 21l intermediate the respective window openings 17 and adjacent the end windowsv of the stripl whereby i to 4guide the cutting knife when the gang or strip of tabs is inserted in a cutting machine. By cutting the gang of tabs on the lines 21, the same become separated from the strip andform the completed tab T asy shown in Figures4 and 5 of the drawings. The end flaps 18 after. the cutting operation areV discarded but by' cutting the same from the end tabs, the said end tabs appear Videntical to the intermediate ones after the cutting operation. i p
The finished tabpiece as shown in Figures 4 and 5 of thedrawings, include a rear wall,
a front wall havingvth-e window opening 17 therein and insert tongues formed by the registering tongues 11, 12, 14 and 15 and which will be referred to by the numerals 22 and 23. Printed adjacent the pointed end wall 24 of the window opening 17 is the stock number and color of the sample material 20 and which is disposed so as not to be concealed when the tongue 22 is inserted into the slit or cutout opening in theo-maten which the tab is to be mounted and which mat will now be fully described. l f j f' In Figures 6 to 8 inclusive I have shown a cardboard or paper mat 25 which is provided with horizontalV slit or cutoutopenings 26 and Y27 respectively, theformerv being in the nature of a'true trianglefor the reception of the insert tongue 22 of the tab piece, while the square in configuration, the end wall of the cutout opening 17 andthe shape of the insert slot 26 may be variedif desired to form other styles. The inner endsy ofthe inserttongues 22 and 23 terminate in vertical shoulders 28 which abut the walls of the insert slots 26 and 27 for limiting lateral shifting ofthe tabs when in mounted position. a Y,
From the foregoing' description, it will be seen that any number of gangs or strips of tabs may be placedone upon the other in stack formation and cut` in a single operation. This willeffect a saving of both time, labor and material.`
In Figure 9 of the drawings the same idea is embodied as that hereinbefore described but lin this form two mats 29 and 30 are arranged continuous Lto each other while integral with the outer sides of the mat are masks 31 and 32, the said inasks'31 and 32 being foldable over the respective mats 29 and 30, whereupon two strips ofjfoldedtabs may be formed in a single operation and likewise cut in a single operation.
In Figures -10 and 11 I have shown a further modiied form wherein the tab T is constructedof two identical sections 33 and 34 having window openings 35and 36 respectively provided therein, the insert tongues 37 and 38 of the'respective 'sections being joined together but foldable on the line 39. The other ends of the sections 33 and 34 are provided with insert tongues 40 and 41 respectively. The inner surface ofthe tab section 33 is provided with a coatingof gum or other. adhesive substance 42 whereupon folding of the sections 33 andV 34 one upon the other with a piece of sample fabric 43 interposed therebetween, will cause the said sections to become secured together withy the fabric displayed on opposite sides'of the tab proper T By providing a window opening on opposite sides of the tab,;a person may not lonly view the color of the particularl fabric but is permitted to feel the texture and quality of the same. Y n A In the foregoing description I mentioned thata plurality of strips of ytabs may be cut in a single cuttingoperation with one strip arranged on top of another and by this same arrangement, a complete set of various color fes "ion
i'ios 'fills vsample tabs may be cut out in the same operation and byv arranging them in proper order,
CII
they may be removed from the cutting ma` chine for insertion into the mounting mats in the particular order desired. By the conf struction of tabs shown, a relatively thin and light structure is provided so that when mounted upon themounting mats the same y will not appear bulky and when so mounted they will appear uniform and provide a neat and attractive display.
While I have shown and described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that some of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention and I, therefore, do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limit-ed only by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
A sample disp-lay card comprising a pair of identical sect-ions joined together at one end,
., said section having window openings therein and being folded at the joined end one over the other for bringing the window openings in registration, a piece of sample fabric interposed between the folded sections, and means for securing said folded sections together with the sample fabric secured therebetween.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature.
CECELIA H. COHEN.
