My invention relates to reproducing units and more particularly to reproducing units of the character described adapted for use in connection with loud speakers.
An obj ect of the invention is lto provide an improved reproducing unit which is compact, durable, simple in construction, efficient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable.
A particular object of the invention is to provide an improved reproducing unit comprising parts which may be quickly and easily assembled and which will remain in proper alignment with each other.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be Obvious to those skilled in the art from the Vdisclosure herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings wherein I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the reference. character 15 designates a sound box casing member provided with the 1usual neck 1G whereby the unit may be attached to a loud speaker, or the equivalent, the member 15 being provided with an annuiar depression 17 of substantially the same diameter' as a diaphragm 20 which is seated in the depression 17. It will be noted that rings 21 and 22 are provided for mounting the marginal portion of the diaphragm. An annuiar lug 23 formed upon an annular plate 24 projects into the recess 17 and clamps the rings 21 and 22 and the marginal portion'of the diaphragm 2O between itself and the mem;-V ber 15, the annular plate 24 being secured to the member 15 by rivets 25, or the equivalent.
Secured to the annular plate 24are bolts27 whereby a permanent magnet 29 is rigidly secured to the annular plate, nuts 30 screwthreaded upon the bolts 27 being provided for this purpose. As shown, the magnet 29 is provided with pole pieces 31 and 31a which are preferably identical in construction. One of these pole pieces is illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 and it will be noted that it comprises a back plate or member 32 providedwith 4a slot 33 through which one of the bolts'27 is ada-ptcd to pass when the apparatus is assembled. Projecting from the pole piece 31 shown in Fig. 8 are integral lugs 34, the construction being such that the end of the pole piece 31 which has the projecting lugs 34 is substantially U-shaped in cross section. As shown, the outer ends of the lugs 34 are provided with rabbets 35. As seit forthabove, the pole piece 31a is preferably identical in construction with the pole piece 31 and I have indicated like parts of the two pole pieces by the same reference characters. When the pole pieces are assembled with the remaining parts of the reproducing unit, the pole piece 31a has its back plate 32 inserted between the annular plate 24 and the magnet 29 while the pole piece 31 has its backplate 32 clamped between the magnet 29 and the nut 30 on one of the bolts 27. When thus arranged, the Vlugs 34 of the pole pieces oppose each other and the rabbets 35 thereof are aligned to receive and hold an armature carrying member 38 Which is preferably formed of brass, or the equivalent material for the purpose. The manner in which the member 38 is seated in the rabbets 35 is best illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 5.
The armature carrying member 38 is preferably stamped fr'om sheet metal and preferably comprises a plate 40 having tWo end Walls 4l formed integral therewith and eX- tending at right angles thereto (Fig. 7). Formed integral with the end Walls 4l and extending substantially parallel to the plate 40 are inwardly projecting lugs 43. At each end of each of the end walls 41 is a lug 45 which is preferably bent as illustrated in Fig. 6 to hold a Winding 47 and apertured plates 48 in place upon the member 38. The Winding 47 is, of course, connected to the output circuit of a radio receiving set, or the equivalent. The plates 48 are preferably formed from a phenolic condensation product, or the equivalent.
It Will be noted that the ends of the armature carrying member 38 abut against surfaces of the rabbets and prevent displacement of the carrying member longitudinally of the Winding 47.
Mounted Within the member 38 is an arm..- ture 50 Which is formed from suitable magnetic material and is secured to the member 38 by a bent Wire 51, the wire 5l being U- shaped and having its lugs projecting through apertures 52 formed in the plate 40 of the member 38. The Wire 5l is preferably soldered to the plate 40 and the ends of the Wire are soldered or otherwise secured to the armature 50, the construction being such that the armature Will vibrate When subjected to the influence of an alternating or fluctuating current flowing in the Winding 47.
One end of a rod or pin 54 is soldered to one end of the armature 50, the other end of the pin 54 being secured to the diaphragm 20. The rod or pin 54 is provided with a head 55 and the shank of the rod or pin passes through a bushing 56 which has a -reduced portion arranged to tit snugly in an aperture 57 provided in the diaphragm 20. The bushing 56 engages the inner side of the diaphragm 20 and engaging the outer side thereof is a Washer 58 which snugly ts upon the reduced portion of the bushing 56. The rod or pin 54, th-e diaphragm 20, bushing 56 and the Washer 58 are preferably first assembled in the manner illustrated in Fig. lO and are then placed in a punch press and stamped in such manner that the head 55 and the outer end of the reduced portion of the bushing 56 are upset in the manner illustrated in Fig. l1.. By practicing this method, the rod or pin 54 is easily and quickly secured to the dia- 5 phragm 20.
As best illustrated in Figs. l, 2 and 3, the diaphragm 2O is preferably provided with a plurality of annular corrugations 60 to prevent the plate from having a natural periodicity which Will interfere with its reproduction of sound, it being understood that When the Winding 47 is energized by an alternating or fluctuating current Within the proper range of frequencies, the armature 50 will vibrate and these vibrations will be 'transmitted to the diaphragm 20 through the rod or pin 54 so that the diaphragm will give out a .note or not-es determined by the frequency of the current.
As shown in Fig. 3, I preferably provide a cup-shaped cover 15a for my improved reproducing unit, the cover 15a being preferably provided With a relatively large aperture 15b in its bottom Wall, which aperture is preferably covered by a coarse mesh screen 150. l find this construction advantageous When the reproducing unit is employed in connection with loud speakers of the air column type. Thus, the reproducing unit is preferably positioned adjacent the outlet end of the air column and When relatively high notes are reproduced by the unit, the sound will travel directly therefrom Without lirst passing entirely through the sound passage or air column. he aperture in the cover plate permits the notes to be projected directly from the reproducing unit and the screen protects the apparatus of the unit from injury.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same Without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.

l. A reproducing unit comprising a magnet, detachable pole pieces secured to the magnet, each of said pole pieces having projecting lugs forming a U-shaped end on the pole piece, said lugs being provided with rabbets, an armature, a diaphragm operatively connected to said armature, an armature carrying member mounted in said rabbets, and a coil Wound around said armature carrying member', the ends of said armature carrying member being disposed to abut against surfaces of said rabbets to prevent displacement of said armature carrying member longitudinally of said coil.
2. A reproducing unit comprising a magnet provided With pole pieces, each of said pole pieces having lugs formed thereon, said lugs eing provided With rabbets, an armature, a diaphragm operatively connected to said armature, an armature carrying member mounted in said rabbets, and a coil Wound around said armature carrying member, the
ends of said carrying member being disposed to abut against surfaces of said rabbets to prevent displacement of said carrying member longitudinally of said coil.
3. A reproducing unit comprising a magnet, pole pieces mounted upon opposed faces of said magnet and provided with lugs having rabbets in the ends thereof, an armature, an armature carrying member seated in said rabbets, a coil Wound around said armature carrying member, the ends of said carrying member being disposed to abut against surfaces of said rabbets to preventJ dis lacement of said carrying member longitu inally of said coil, and a diaphragm operatively con nected to said armature.'
4. A reproducing unit comprising a magnet equipped with pole pieces having rabbets 2Q formed therein, an armature carrying member formed from sheet metal and seated in said rabbets, a coil Wound around said armature carrying member, the ends of said carrying member abutting surfaces of said rabbets z5 to prevent displacement of said carrying member longitudinally of said coil, an armature mounted in said carrying member, and
a. diaphragm operatively connected to said armature.
5. A reproducing unit comprising amagnet equipped With pole pieces having rabbets formed therein, a coil, an armature carrying member around which the coil is Wound, said armature carrying member being formed from sheet metal and provided with tabs bent into engagement with said coil to prevent longitudinal displacement thereof, the ends of said carrying member abutting surfaces of said rabbets to prevent displacement of said carrying member relative to said pole pieces in a direction longitudinal of said coil, an armature mounted in said 4carrying member, and a diaphragm operatively connected to said armature.
