IMPROVEMENT IN CAN-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,563, dated December 19, 1876; application filed October 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES C. MOORE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can- Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which-' Figure 1 is a "ertical section. perspective view of my invention.
This invention is designed to facilitate the opening of cans; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a canhead having a lid-plate soldered to the opening in the head by the marginal edges of said opening, and having a peripheral margin projecting outward from the soldered line, whereby a purchase can be obtained for the ready detachment of the plate, as will he hereinafter more fully explained.

B represents the cap-plate or disk, which is of sufiicient diameter to span the opening a, and to have a peripheral extension, 1), beyond the edge thereof. This cap-plate or disk is secured to the head A by soldering it to the edge or margin of the opening a on the inside, the solder being designed not to extend to the peripheral edge of the disk, to prevent which the space between the projecting margin of the plate and the beveled margin of the opening a is usually found sufficient. Therefore the peripheral margin of the plate or disk will be free, and the plate will be attached to head by a thin convex line of solder at the margin of the opening. The intervening space between the free edge of the cap and the head is wedge form, and the line of solder will readily yield upon the introduction of an instrument under said edge.
The can to which the said improvement is applied is generally filled, the head having the cap-plate being the lowermost during such operation. The other head is then soldered down and the can reversed. This is found to be more convenient, because the capplate is soldered to the head from the inside, and more care is required in its adjustment than is necessary with the bottom, which may be attached quickly from the outside.
To open the can it is only necessary to insert the end of a knife or other flat instrument under the free peripheral edge of the capplate, and tear it away from the margin of the opening without difficulty.

The can-head having a central opening, a, and a cap-plate, B, soldered from the inside to the marginal edge of said opening, and extending by its free concentric periphery I) outward beyond said marginal edge, substantially as specified.
