This invention aims to provide novel means for supporting a persons head, in a vehicle, so that it will be possible for `the person to reoline and restvor sleep.

With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described' and claimed, it being understood that changes may be made in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, within the scope of what is claimed, without de-` parting from the spirit of the invention.

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a flexible head rest 1 which may be made in any desired way, and of any Ydesired materials, such as cloth,` leather, imitation leather, and the like. The flexible head. rest 1 includes side sections 2 and an intermediate sec-tion 3. The head rest, and particularly the side sections 2, may be made as preferred. As shownin Figures 5 and 6, the side sections 2 include an outer body 4 of leather, cloth, or the like, an inner lining 5, which is flexible,

A thin padding 6 may be interposed between the lining 5 and the body 4, if preferred.

Near to Athe forward end of thehead rest 1 itis provided with'longitudinal openings or slits 10 which renders the portions 36 of the head rest that are immediately adjacent to the slits flexible and yielding, so that the head rest can give somewhat, at the places designated by the numeral 36, to accommodate the .ears of the wearer as the head rest bulges outwardly at the ears. The lining 5 may be expanded as shown in Figure 5, at the portions 36 of the head rest toform receptacles 11 for Apillows 12 which may be made of feathers or any other sound-deadening material. The flexible head rest 1 fits about the head of the operator as shown in Figure l of the drawings, the inner or upper edges ofthe head rest 1 having notches 7 which expose the temples of the wearer. The head rest 1 isl provided in its upper Aor inner. edges with notches 8 located near to the inner end 37 of the head rest, the notches 8 vexposing the cheeks of the wearer, coolness being therebyY promoted. The top of the head rest may overlap the forehead of the wearer,

as shown in Figure l at 9.

-At the forward upperv corners of the head -rest 1, there are pockets 14, the constituent walls of which are held together detachably through the instrumentality of snap fasteners 15 or in any other desired way. Headed anchors 16 are secured to the outer walls of the pockets 14.

Loop-shaped connectors 17 are detachably engaged with the anchors 16 and are housed within the pockets 14, so that the connectors will not come into contact with the face of the wearer. Rear suspension members 18, which preferably are elastic, are provided and are formed into adjustable loops 19 engaged through the connectors 17, the loops4 19 being held at adjusted lengths through the instrumentality of buckles 20. `At their upper ends, the rear suspensionmembers 18 carryeyes 21 which are detachably mounted on a hook 22 carried by the roof 23 of the vehicle.

Flexible loops 24 are held through the instrumentality of stitched patches 25 on the forward corners of the head rest 1, near to the upper edge of the headl rest. Flexible tongues 26 are engaged through the loops 24 and are held closed by snap fasteners 27 o-r any other suitable way. The tongues 26 are united to loop-shaped connectors 28. Forward suspension members 30 are provided, the forward suspension members- 30 being elastic. The forward suspension members 30 are looped at 29 through the connectors 28 and are held at adjusted lengths by buckles 38 or equivalent' means." "Snaps 31 are mounted on the upper ends of-the forward suspension members 30 and are engaged with horizontally spaced hooks 32 on the roof 23 of the vehicle.

The numeral 33 designates. atransverse, two-part binder, the constituent members of which -may be secured together bysnap fasteners 3l. At their outer ends, the constituent members of the binder 33 carry rings 35, through which the tongues'26 are detachably engaged.

The device forming the subject matter of this application will be found useful for persons who desi-re to sleep or rest and relax while travelling or standing stil-l in. a vehicle ofany kind, such as an automobile, motor bus, truck, aeroplane, seaplane, dirigible, or the like. The driver may use the device when the vehicle` isv standing still, and passengers may use it at 'any time. Persons who are recovering from illness, and are still.L

weak will find. comfort in riding, whereas, at present, they are unable to relax in a vehicle. Through the instrumentalityA of the device forming the subject matter of this application, persons on long trips can. relieve one another, and thefperson who is off` duty as a driver can rest himselfV or relax. The device may be used by hunters, fishermen, and `others in. the. woods, where sleeping places are not available. The device. willbe foundtol be comfortable to the operator.V ItI holds the head without objectionable jarring, is vnot dangerous or uncomfortable, and permits. theL head to sway a little, if any, turning corners, going around curves, and the like. v

The operator, if he wishes, can unsnap the parts of the binder 33 and permit the sides of the iexible .head rest 1 to swing outwardly. The device may be made in various sizes, depending upon the size of the head of the person who is using it. The cushions 12 of Figure 5 prevent sound from indingits way into the ears of the user appreciably, and refreshing sleep or quiet is thereby assured. jIf the operator, wishes, he may dispense with the rear suspension'members 18, and they vcan then be housed in the pockets 14'. The forward suspension members 30 may be adjusted as to length, owing to the provision of the buckles 38 and the buckles 2O permit an adjustment in the length of the rear suspension members 18. Although the rear suspension members 18 have been shown taut in the drawings, for the sake of simplicity in delineation, they may be left slightly slack, the purpose of the rear suspension members 18 being to limit the side swaying of the head of the user. The relative slant of the suspension members 18 and 30 will depend upon conditions, but they should be adjusted so as to promote comfort, and at the same time4 hold the head in place. Both the suspension members 18 and 30 preferably have a slight forward inclination, and the suspension. members 18 diverge as they extend upwardly. Owing to the relative positions of the hooks 32 and 22, they cause a three-point suspension to be afforded, andA the head will be carried in a naturali and comfortable manner. The forward suspension members 30 carry the weight of the head, and being elastic they yield and avoidv jars, in the event of the vehicle hitting a rough placein theroad.

All vehicles are' not constructed in the same manner, but a skilled mechanic will have no difliculty in mounting the device in the roof or any other accessible part of a vehicle of any kind, regardless of its construction.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

' 1. A device of the class described, comprising a substantially horizontal, flexible, ca-pl like head rest open at its inner end, forward suspension members connected at their lower ends to the sides of the head rest and diverg ing as they extend upwardly, to prevent the inner corners ofthe head rest from-being pulled inwardly against the cheeks of the user, rear suspension members connected at their lower ends to the sides ofthe head rest and converging as they extend upwardly, to

pull in the sides of the head rest, at'the'outer end thereof,and thereby steady the 'head1 of the user, means for anchoring the upper ends of the forward suspension members in spaced relation to each other, and means for mounting the'upper ends of the rear suspension members substantially at a common point, thereby to afford a three-point support for the head rest.

2. A device of the class described,l constructed as set forth in claim 1, and further characterized by the provision of means for adjusting the inner corners of the head rest, to limit the action of the said diverging forward suspension members, said means embodying a releasable binder Yconnecting the sides of the head rest at its forward'y end.

3. A device of the class described, comprising a cap-like head rest having pockets at its sides, suspension members mounted in the pockets, andmeans for connecting the CTI iii)

suspension members to an overhead support, the suspension members being foldable for housing Within the pockets.

4:. A device of the class described, comprising a exible, cap-like head rest, means for suspending the head rest from an overhead support, and ear cushions carried by the sides of the head rest, the head rest having slits at the lower ends of the Cushions.
