IMPROVEMENT IN VALVE-SEATS.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent N 0. 185,496, dated December 19, 1876; application filed October 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J A0013 F. (300K, of Rockville Centre, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Valve-Seat, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line a; w in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to improvements in the valve-seats of ordinary lifting or forcing pumps 5 and it consists in providing a valveseat of leather or other elastic or yielding material, placed in a channel cut in the bottom of the pump-cylinder around the valve-opening, or placed in a channel in an annular plate, which may also contain the packing for the lower end of the pump-cylinder, and to which the valve may be attached.
The object of the invention is to provide a valve-seat which shall not readily wear, and which will permit the valve to close tightly, and which may be readily repaired.
In the drawing, A is the ordinary weighted flap-valve, and B is a valve-seat, consisting of leather, rubber, or other elastic or yielding material, which, in the present case, is fitted to an annular channel in the metallic plate 0, which surrounds the valveopening D in the said plate. The plate 0 has the same 'diameter as the disk in which the valve A is formed, and its edge is turned under at a, forming a groove, in which a packing-ring, b, is placed. The valve A is attached to the plate (J by the clip 0. packing are attached together in convenient form for attachment to any pump; but I do not limit myself to this construction.
In applying my invention to new pumps, in the process of manufacture I groove the valveseat or lower portion of the pump cylinder around the valve-opening, and place in it the rubber or leather valve-seat B.
The arrangement first described is adapted to repairs, and to pumps made in the ordinary manner.
Having thus described 111 yin vention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1. The combination of the yielding valveseat B, plate 0, packing-ring b, and the valve A, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the yielding part B with the ordinary valve-seat of a pump, the same being grooved to receive the part B, substantially as set forth.
JACOB F. COCK.
