THE GRAPHIC C0.N.Y
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. BARKER, OF POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOWlNG-MACHINE SHARPENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,424, dated December 19, 1876; application filed October 16, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. BARKER, of the city of Poughkeepsie, county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harvester- Outter Sharpeners; and I hereby declare the following to be. a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a view of an ordinary file or rasp. Fig. 2 is an obverse view of the same, showing an abrasive compound applied.
My invention consists in applying to one side or edge of a file of any desired form, a composition of emery or other abrasive substance.
A special purpose to which my improved implement is applied is in removing the rough or ragged edges from the teeth of harvester-cutters by first using the file portion and then applying the emery side to produce a smooth cutting-edge.
I do not confine myself, however, to thisspecial use, as the implement is well adapted for metal-workers wherever a file and polishing-stick are needed.
The composition may be applied in a plastic state, and allowed to dry, or be placed in an oven and baked. It may be formed of any degree of fineness, and be applied in one or more layers. The teeth of the file serve to retain the composition in place, but it may be applied to a smooth surface. An interposed layer of wood may also be employed between the file and composition.
I am aware that emery-sticks for the purposes described are not new; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A new article of manufacture, consisting of a file having one of its sides or edges coated with emery or other abrading substance, substantial] y as described.
2. In combination with a file of any desired form, a layer of wood attached thereto, and coated with an abrasive substance, as set forth.
WILLIAM C. BARKER.
