The object of this invention is to provide a phonograph disk record playing mach ne particularly adapted for use in broadcasting and in the talking motion picture industry. A particular object of the invention is to i provide a machine for playing phonograph records, so arranged and constructed so as to completely eliminate all noises and sounds foreign to the musical reproduction. Amother object of the invention is to provlde means whereby the machine may be used to operate a motion picture machine in synchronism with the playing of a phonograph record. Other objects will appear as this specification proceeds while reference is had to the accompanying drawings in whlch Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine with parts broken away and in section and parts omitted.

Figure 2 is a detail view of the phonograph record carrying turntable, partly broken away.

. Figure 3 is a detail view of parts shown 1n Figures 1 and 2.

Referring to the drawings, the phonograph record to be played, that is broadcasted is designated 1 and is carried by a turntable comprising a record supporting disk 2 and a turntable base 3. The supporting disk 2 is 3 provided with the usual center stud or pin as shown. The two latter elements are connected in a manner permitting automatlc centering and levelling of the supporting disk with terposed between the supporting disk 2 and the turntable base 3. The other spring 5 is located beneath the base 3. s

The rod 6 extends from the disk 2 and through the base 3. It carries a nut 7 whereby to adjust the tension of the springs 4 and 5. ,The aperture 8 in the base 3 vis large enough to permit lateral movement of the. disk 2 relative to the base 3 without disturbing the action of the spring memberfin supporting the disk 2. v

, The disk carries four lugs 10 and the base carries four lugs 11 in lateral spaced relation andin alinement. A rod 13 passes through each pair of lugs and carries two springs 14 and15, the tension of which may be adjusted byanut16. V 1

From this it will be seen that as the base 3 is rotated, it carries the disk 2 along, permitting lateral centering of the latter, which in turn rests upon and floats on thevertical 05. I

spring members. In this manner all'vibra- 'tion from the driven member 8 is taken up by the spring members and the phonograph record is operated so as to eliminate allnoise and vibrations from the driving mechanism and the machine. a

It has been found that by this construction,

the reproduction of sound from the record lis materially improved and noticeably superior particularly in broadcasting.

The turntable is carried by a shaft 16 which is suitably supported in a gear box 17 filled with oil and in which the shaft carries a worm gear 18 driven from a worm wheel 19 on a shaft 20. The latter is coupled to an electric motor shaft 21 by means; of a flex- .ible coupling 22 of suitable material and construction to eliminate as much as possible noise and vibrations from the motor .24.

The latter is supported on a bracket 25 which also supports the gear box and is secured to the upperend of a support 26 which vis carried by a foot 27 in vertically adjustable relation by means of set screws 28. The foot'is provided with levelling screws To still further steady the machine and avoid vibrations, there is provided an adjustable vertical brace which rests on the foot 27 and supports the motor.

To the bracket 25 there is secured an upright 32 which carries the base 33 of the sound box arm 34 upon soft packings 35, which may be disks of rubber and felt or other like suitable material. The sound box arm is pivoted at 37 and carries a suitable sound box 39 adapted by means of wires 40 to carry the sound from the phonograph record to a broadcasting or amplifying apparatus, not shown.

The bracket 25 may further carry a driving mechanism 44 comprising a shaft 42 driven by a worm and gear 43 and 45 from a coupling 46 similar to the coupling 22 connected to the motor shaft. The shaft 42 may be used to operate a motion picture machine,

not shown. In this manner a motion picture film may be synchronously operated with the phonograph record. The driving mechanism '44 may be detached if the machine is to be used'for broadcasting only.

A protecting shell or shield 49 is secured to turntable base and a guard rail 50 is provided to protect the machine in general.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the machine may be set up, levelled and adjusted vertically for proper operation. A phonograph record may be played alone for broadcasting purposes, or may be played in synchronism with the driving mechanism for a motion picture film.

The record supporting disk 2 floats on the springs 4 and 5 and is centered yieldingly and automatically by the horizontal springs 14 and '15.

While I have shown the invention in its preferred form, nevertheless it will be understood that changes and modifications may be made in the construction without going outside the scope of the appended claim.

I claim In a machine of the character described, in combination, a turntable'shaft, a phonograph record operating turntable carried by said shaft and comprising a lower turntable a lug depending from the record disk cooperating with an upstanding lug from the turntable base, said lugs being spaced and alined in cooperative relation, a through said lugs, a coiled spring on said rod "between the lugs and another coiled spring on-the rod" outside the lugs, a nut on said rod rod passing to adjustthe tension of thesprings, each of SAMUEL ZULLO.
