Description
April 2- c. B. POLHEMUS 1,853,319
BARBECUE GRATE Filed Oct. 19,-1929 4 Tron/pa ry Patented Apr. 12, 1932 CHARLES B. POLHEMUS, OI SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA BARBECUE GRATE Application filed October 19, 1929. Serial No. 400,831.
When a fire is built in the fire-box the air is heated in the chamber 9 and since this is a closed chamber the top 8 is quickly heated and maintained in a heated condition even when the fire is reduced to coals.
By manipulating the handle 16 the grate may be raised or lowered as desired to bring the grate into the desired position relativeto the fire, being gradually lowered as the fire dies down so that the heat from the fire may be used most efficiently.
By combining the grate andspit as disclosed either one may be used independently of the other or they may both be used at the same time.
The device may be readily wheeled from place to place, and the construction of the fire-box is such that the fire and heat therefrom is confined within desired limits, permitting use of the device indoors if so de- It is the object of the present invention to provide a barbecue grate so mounted as to be readily transported without disturbing its operative relationship to the fire bed used in conjunction therewith.
It is another object of the invention to provide a device of the character indicated wherein a warming table may be operated in conjunction with the grate as an integral in part of the general assembly.
It is still another object of the invention to provide a device of the character indicated wherein-a grate and spit are operative as a unit relative to the fire bed but independentla) 1y operative for their separate purposes.
Finally, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of the character above indicated that will be economical to manufacture, simple in form and construction, strong,
20 durable, and highly eflicient in its practical application.
The drawing is a perspective illustration of a device embodying my invention, parts broken away.
In the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, I show at 1 a fire-box mounted on wheels as 2 and legs 3 and fitted with a handle 4, the box being lined with fire-brick 5 except at the forward end 6 which conw sists merely of a single sheet metal plate as shown. The forward'end of the box extends a distance beyond plate 6 as indicated at 7 and is provi ed with a sloping bottom 8a and a flat top 8, this end portion being entirely enclosed to form a closed chamber 9.
At 10-10 are a air of standards mounted on opposite en s of the box 1 and connected by a top bar as 11. At opposite ends of bar 11 are mounted pulleys as 12 over which cables 13 operate, the cables supporting a grate 14 as shown. The cables are connected at 15 to a hand lever 16 pivotally mounted as at 17 to an arm 18 on box 1. In the standard 10 adjacent the lever 16 are formed a number of notches at 19 to receive the said lever and hold the same in any given position.
On two opposite corners of the grate 14 are mounted depending ears 2020 to form 0 bearings for a spit 21.
sired.
It is to be understood, of course, that while I have herein shown and described but one specific embodiment of the invention, changes in form, construction, and method of assembly and operation may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
box.
CHARLES POLHEMUS.
