This invention` relates to lighting devices of the sparking type heretofore employed in igniting gas and other combustibles and more specically to an improved lighting device of this type which is designed so as to more efficiently perform its function than did similar devices heretofore known, the predominant obj-ect of the invention being to provide an improved lighting device of the type referredto which is provided with a plurality 'of sparking `elements adjustable successively into operative position relative to an'abrasive member whereby the period of time during which the device may be used before it is necessary to renew the spark producing means thereof is very greatly increased.
Lighting devices of the type disclosed here-y in are used extensively in igniting the gases issuing from gas-burning cutting and welding torches, and considerable annoyance `was causedby the fact that the devices heretofore employed for this purpose each included a single sparking element which very quickly was consum-ed by repeated operation of they lighting device and hence had to be frequently renewed. To eliminate this annoyance we have devised the improved lighting devicedisclosed herein. which, briefly stated, includes a plurality of sparking elements which are adjustable successively into operative position relative to the abrasive member of the device'. The handle l preferably is formed from a strip of metal, or other suitable material, which isr possessed of considerable resiliency, said strip of material being bent to assume a substantially U shaped form as shown in' Fig. l and with a bowedr connecting portion l? at the outer end of the handle. For the purpose of convenience 2 is an venlarged section on line 2-2 l' in describing the invention we designate one leg portion of the handle by the reference character lb and the other leg portion thereof by the reference character 1.
The end portion of the leg portion 1b of the handle l opposite the end thereof which joins the bowed connecting portion la is shaped as clearly illustrated in Fig. lof the drawings; that is to say a yoke 4 is provided which is comprised of oppositely disposed side walls 4a and 4b and a top or end wall 4c which is formed integral with said side walls 4 and 4h. The yoke 4, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings is integrally joined to the leg portion 1) of the handle 1 by an inclined connecting portion 5 whereby the handle 1 and the yoke 4 provide a unitary structure. Also the side wall 4b of the yoke is elongated as indicated at 6 in Fig. 1 for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. f 1
Supported within the yoke 4 is a box-like structure 7 whichhouses the abrasive member 2 of the device, said box-like structure comprising oppositely disposed end Walls 7, top and bottom walls 7* and 7c respectively, and a back wall 7d. The walls referred to produce an integral structure which is open at the front as shown clearly in Fig. 2, the top Wall b of this structure preferably being of less width than the bottom wall 7 c and being in contact with the inner facey of the wall 4L of the yoke 4. The abrasive member 2, which may formed of any suitable material such as metal or the material known commercially as Lava, is provided with an opening 2 which extends longitudinally therethrough from end to endthereof,-and the end walls 7'a of the box-like structure 7 are provided with openings 8y which are alined with said opening 2. In like manner the side walls 4a and4bof the yoke structure are provided with openings 9 formed therethrough which are alined with thel opening 2 formed through the abrasive member and the openings 8 formed in the end walls of the boxlike structure 7. Extended through the alined openings 2, 8, and 9 in the abrasive member 2,` yoke 4, and the box-like structure 7 is a bolt 10 which is provided with a head portion 1()a at one end, and a screwthreaded portion at the opposite end which receives a nut 11. The nut 11. is screwed inwardly on thev screwthreaded end portion of the bolt 10 so as to cause said nut and; the head portion of the bolt to lfirmly contact with the side walls 4a and 4b whereby the yoke 4 and boxlikeV structure 7 are securely fixed together and the abrasive member is maintained in its proper position.V
The end portion 12 of the leg portion 1c of the handle 1 is twisted with respect to the remainder of said leg portion until the width of said portion 12 is disposed in a vertical plane which is approximately parallel with respect to the axis of `the abrasive member 1. Also this portion 12 is provided with an extension 12v at its upper end which isr shaped as shown in Fig. 1., The portion12- is alsoy provided with an opening 13 through which a screwthreadcd bolt 14 is exten ded, the head portion- 14 of said bolt being in Contact with the outer face of the portion 12 and being permanently secured to said face by solder or other means 14a.
Rotatably supported by the bolt 14 in contact with the inner face of the portion 12 of the leg portion 1C is a head 15 which is provided with a plurality of radial arms 16. Also said head, at points intermediate the arms 16 is provided in an edge portion thereof with a plurality of notches 17. The portion 12 of the leg portion lC is provided with a pin 18 which extends inwardly from the inner face of said portion 12, said pin being provided with a reduced portion 19 which is disposed in an aperture formed through the portion l2 and is rivetedk in place therein whereby said pin is securely fixed in place. AsV shown very clearly in Figs. 1 and 3 the lowermost notch 17 of the head 15 embraces the pin 18 in a manner to prevent unintended rotation of the head. 15 about the bolt 10. Mounted on the screwthreaded end portion of the bolt 14 is a nut 21 which is provided with an elongated sleeve 21. T he inner end of the sleeve 21" ofthe nut referred to may be screwed into close contact with theV head 15 so as to force said head into firm contact with the inner face of the portion 12 of the leg portion 1c of the handle 1. It will be noted by referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings that the downwardly extended portion 6 of the side wall 4b of the yoke 4 serves as a stop with which the sleeve 21 ofthe nut 21 may contact to prevent undue outward movement of the portion of the leg portion 1 which supports the sparking elements. Also as shown in Fig. 2 the head portion ofy the nut 21 overlaps the box-like structure 7 whereby the end of the leg portion 1c which supports the sparking elements is prevented by contact of said head portion of the bolt with the rear wall of said box-like structure, from springing in a direction away from the abrasive member 2.
The portions 22 of the handle which are grippedy when the device is being operated are preferably curved slightly in a transverse direction as indicated in Fig. 4. Also these portions 22 are disposed at such angles that when pressure is applied, in a manner to be hereinafter described, to cause the effective sparking element 3 to move longitudinally in contact with the abrasive member 2, such pressure, because same exerts a force at a right angle to the planes of portions will cause the effective sparking element to be forced rmly against the face of the abrasive member. In order to aid the natural resiliency ofthe handlefwe may, ilr desired, provide the device with a spring suchas that designated by the reference character 23.

A lighting device comprising an abrasive member, a plurality of sparking elements, means for supporting said abrasive member and said sparking elements in a manner to permit movement of said sparking elements relative to said abrasive member, carrying means for said sparking elements, said carrying means being adjustable relative to said supporting means 'in a manner to position one or another of said sparking elements in an operative position adjacent to said abrasive member, and means for locking said carrying means in positions to Which it has been adjusted, the last mentioned means comprising a pin on said supportingY means which is engaged by notches formed in said carrying means in a manner to prevent undesigned movement of said carrying means, a screwthreaded element supported by said supporting means and providing a support for said carrying means, and a nut screwed on said screwthreaded element and engageable with said carrying means in a manner to prevent accidental disengagement of said notches and said pin, said nut being provided with a head portion which overlaps an associated portion of the device in a manner to prevent undue lateral separation of said abrasive member and said sparking elements.

A lighting device comprising a resilientsupporting element of substantially U-shaped formation, an abrasive member supported by a portion of said resilient supporting element, afsparking element supported by another portion of said supporting element, said supporting element being yieldable to permit movement of said sparking element relative to said abrasive member, and angularly disposed gripping portions forming parts of said U-shaped supporting element which serve to force the sparking element into close contact With said abrasive member when the device is operated.

A lighting device comprising an abrasive member, a sparking element movable relative to said abrasive member, means for supporting said abrasive member and said sparking element, means for rotatably supporting said abrasive member, and a groove formed in the face of said abrasive member which provides sharp corners With which the sparking element contacts in a manner to increase the sparking effect of the device.
9. A lighting device comprising an abrasive member, a sparking element movable relative to said abrasive member, means for supporting said abrasive member and said sparking element, means for rotatably supporting said abrasive member, and a curved groove formed in the face of said abrasive member which serves to impart rotary movement to said abrasive member when engaged by said sparking element and provides sharp corners with which the sparking element contacts in a manner to' increase the sparking effeet of the device.
