Description
R. S. PERRIN.
BRUSHES.
Patented Dec. 12, 1878.
\ ....VNI!
'K I bre-Ju) ATTORNEY WITNESSES NTTED STETEs PATENT RAYMOND S. PERRIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO RAYMOND S. PERRIN BRUSH COMPANY, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 85,256, dated December 12, 1876; application tiled October 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND S. PERmN, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and'exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artA to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to brushes, having for its object a brush which will unite strength of body and tastefulness of appearance. It moreespecially refers to that class of brushes in which the bristles are connected with a plug or filling independent ofthe handle, and my design is to so secure the ring or metallic jacket surrounding this killing that the two may be firmly attached together, and at the same time will confine the bristles with a crowding action approximate to their engagement with the lling. This I accomplish by the following construction; and my invention hence consists in the construction and arrangement ofthe several parts of a paint-brush, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a' brush made in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 being a central longitudinal section of same. Y
A is the handle, made of an independent piece from the illing or plug B, both of which may be of any suit-able material and appropri-ate dimension. The point or lower end of the handle projects below the lower surface ot' -the plug; but it is evident that my improvethe incasing ring or thimble G, of which latter this tongue or bead forms a part.
Both the upper and the lower circular end extremities are flanged or turned in toward the vertical center of the plug, by which means the ring is both the better secured to the plug at its top, and also serves at its bottom to compress and retain the bristles as the latter connect with the plug.
By my construction I am enabled to use to advantage the zinc metal in the composite material of the ring, since this peculiar construction of same imparts rigidity to it, thus acting' as a strengthening-rib.
The manner of attaching this ring to its supporting-plug, constituting the elemental feature of the invention, consists in placing the ring, having a smooth plane surface body, over its plug, and then stamping, or in any way forcing, the waist of the ring into the centrai annular recess of thel plug, and tlanging or turning the upper and lower peripheries of same in against the respective end extremities of the plug.
Under this construction a metallic ring can be connected by inwardly projecting end flanges and a central depressed rib to a plug, in a manner which necessitates a secure joint, and possessing corresponding advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a paint-brush, the combination, with the plug B and independent handle, the latter constructed with the portion engaging with the plug, ot' parallel sides, and having a pointed end, whereby it is driven downwardly through the plug, of the metallic ferrule C, formed with upper and lowerinwardly-turned flanges, and a central inwardly-depressed groove, whereby the plug and bristles are securely held in place, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
lIn testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of October, 1876.
RAYMOND S. PERRIN.
