Description

March 29, 1932. c. WAL ER 1",'851,554
PISTON GIB 7 Filed Aug. 50, 193Q Fig.1. I 2.
IN VEN TOR.
Patented Mar. '29, 1932 I oLnv'ron Li WALKER, or PIEDMONT, CALIFORNIA PISTON IB Application filed August 30,1930. Serial No. 478,884.
This invention relates to pistons for use in pumps, engines, and the like, and more particularly to the means for connectingthe pistons to the crank shaft in that'type of 5 engine employing the Scotch yoke mechanism such for instance, as is particularly shown in my patent entitled Air pump #1,263,166, April 16, 1918. This type of pump or engine consists of a straight shaft to which is attached. one or more eccentrics and surrounding eacheccentric is a rectangular frame, said frames beingv fitted to the eccentric and being formed of the right types of metal to permit'of high rotational speed as between these parts. This rectangular frame has fiat, smooth and parallel surfaces on two or four sides according to whether two or four cylinders are operated from each eccentric. This frame in turn, bears against a,
flat surface ona gib, mounted in thepiston proper, and it is the object of this invention to improve the bearing and lubricating con-" ditionsas between the rectangular frame and a the bearing gib. This ,is accomplished in this invention by increasing the length of the contacting surfaces between the frame and the gib to such an extent that the length of the gio exceeds the diameter of the bore of the cylinder. g 7
One form'which my invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a piston showing the piston and a side View ofthe gib to" ether with a fragment of the rods connectmg the pairs of pistons which are employed inithis type of opposed motor.
Fig. 2 is also a side elevation of the piston,
40 but shows an end view of-the bearing gib. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the gib.
Fig. 4 is a diagram illustrating the general type of engine or pump to which this construction is attached. a I
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views of the accompanying drawings.
- 1 illustrates the skirt of the piston having the usual ring and head section; 2 illustrates the back side of the gib which comes in contact with a seat of corresponding contourin the piston and corresponds to the wrist pin used in the conventional type of connecting rod engine. 3 1s a; channel member attached rigidly to 25 but" is greaterinlength-than 2 for thelpurpose' of increasing the bearing areaof the inner face of the channel and to reduce the amount of oil'thrown into: the cylinder at the end of the stroke; 4 are connect:
ing rods, four in number for each pair of pistons operating oflfrom each pair ofparal- V p lel sides of'the rectangular frame.
It has been found "from experience; that" unless the length .of the bearing surface be-f' tween'the frame and the gib-jexceeds thejbore of the cylinder that the oil'and the bearing metalparticularly adjacent the ends o'flthe T gib' 'will breakdown, and that an'exce'ss of f oil will be. thrown into the cylinder-at the, 1
outer end of the stroke, but whereth i length of the fgib is" increased greater than thebbre of the "cylinder,.;"the condition will i be materiallyjmprove'd. a s
-While cer tain features of the present in;
vention are more or'less specifically illustrated',1 I wishit' understood that various changes in form and proportion may. be resortedto within vthescopeiof the appended claims; I similarly- Wish it understood that" the materials and finish of the several parts employed maybe such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer'may dictatev or various uses demand. a I 7 Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim and desire-t0 secure by Letters Pat ent is: V r
