Description

G. FQWILsoN.
DEVICE FOR STOPPING LEAKS IN PIPES.
N0.185,153. FatentedDec. 5,1875.
WITNEEEEE: INVENTI THE GRAPHIC CiLNM UEEEEE TETES PATENT EEIOE.
GEORGE F. WILSON, 'OF THORNDIKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [85,153, dated December 5, 18715; application filed November 1, 1876.
To all. whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. WILSON, of Thorndike, in the county ot' Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Stopping Leaks in Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to inake and use it, reference heilig had to the accompanying' drawing, which forms part ot' this specification.
My invention relates to au improvement in devices for stopping leaksl in pipes; and'it consists in a circular-shaped casting and a wedge, whereby a packing can be quickly and securely attached to the pipe over the hole, as will he more fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention.
ay represents a common pipe, and c a circular-shaped casting, which is entirely Open on one side, so that it can be applied to the side ot' varioussized pipes. This casting is so formed as to stand a great strain Without breaking, and has a wide dat end, d, under which the packing is applied, and a notch, e,
in its smaller end, so that the wedge g cannot slip out sidewise.
When a leak is found in a pipe, a suitable Washer or packing is applied to the inside of the Wide end d, which is curved so as to conform to the shape of the pipe, and the casting is then applied to the pipe so that the packing will cover the hole. The wedgeg is then driven in between the side of the pipe and the small end of the casting, thereby clamping the casting securely in position.
This device is equally well adapted to Water, steam, or gas pipes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 'Ihe combination of a circular-shaped casting, c, which carries or holds a packing in one end, and a Wedge for vsecuring the casting to the pipea, substantially as shown.
In testimony that I claim lthe foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 27th day of October, 1876.
GEORGE E, WILSON. [1.. s.]
