Description

March 22, 1932. w, M SCHQLL 1,859,852
FOOT MEASURING DEVICE Filed Aug. 26. 1927 V I U E MY/l'am M 60/20 Patentecl Mar; ,22, 1 9321 UNITED STATES} P ama WILLIAM M. soHoLL, or QEIIIQAGQILLiKQIS FOOT MEASURING pmiicn Application filed August 26, $1927- finial 10. 21515132 7 The invention relates to devices for measuring the human foot.-
Arch supports, for relieving, raising and supporting the various arches ofthe foot, have a definite size relation to the distance between the rear of the heel and the point where the first metatarsal articulates with a corresponding phalang-e, or in other words, the lateral projection of the large toe joint.
For the purpose of uniformity the arch supports have been consecutively numbered to approximately correspond with the shoe numbers, there is however, some variation in sizes required in unusual cases.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device which may be used to accurately measure the foot and directly indicate in whole numbers the size of arch support best adapted for the foot measured.
Another object is to provide a device which accurately will measure the distance. from the rear of the heel to the center of the great toe joint for determining the size or length of a shoe or an arch support for the foot so measured, and which will bear a visible indication of the measurement so made in terms of numbers which the shoe or arch support bears.
ther obj ects, advantages and benefits will hereinafter appear from a consideration of the following description when taken with i the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 shows an outline of a foot in side elevation with the device applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a plan outline of a foot showing the device applied thereto.
Figure 3 is a section taken on line III1II of Figure 2.
Figures isia transverse section taken on line IVIV ofFigure 2.
In all the views the same reference char.- acters indicate similar parts.
The device consists of two members. The
inner member 5 is provided with a ring 6 on one end, and, for convenience, a handle part 7 on the other end. The ring is intended T to overlie the laterally exteding protuberance 8, whichis the location near the first metatarsal of a natural foot;

2. In a device of the class described, a pair of relatively movable members engageable with different parts of a foot to indicate the distance therebetween, one of said members gohaving graduations in the form of notches and the other having a pointer in the form of a yieldable pawl selectively engageable in said notches to yieldably maintain said members in a selected adjustment and at the same time indicate the adjusted relation of said members, said members having perpendicularly related portions engageable respectively with the back of the heel and a forward portion of the foot, whereby to insure measurement of the true distance of said portion of the foot forwardly of the heel, regardless whether a right or a left foot is involved. In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name at Chicago, Cook County,
as Illinois.
