Another object of the invention is the provision of an aperture through the backhead of the firebox together with new and improved means for conducting fuel from a source of supply through said opening and distributing the same over the grates of said firebox. l
A specific embodiment of the invention is illustrated on the-drawings and hereinafter described, this application being a division of my application, Serial No. 95,918, filed March 19, 1926, Patent No. 1,718,065, June 18, 1929.

Re erring now to the drawings, the reference character 9 designates a locomotive having the conventional backhead 10 thereof provided with an aperture 11 in its lower portion, which may, if desired, extend to a point above the cab deck 15 as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In the form of construction selected to illustrate one embodiment of the invention, this conveying mechanism mainly includes a fuel conveying conduit 14, located below the deck 15 of the locomotive cab 16 and it extendsforward under the lower margin i of the casing or cover 12, its inner end 17 being upturned forward of the casing and being housed within the chamber or alcove. This upstanding portion of the conduit may be readily removed from the section of which it forms a continuation. The casing 12 also serves to form a closure between the aperture 11 and the cab 16 of the locomotive.
A fuel advancing element, such as the screw 18, is housed within the conduit and terminates at the elbow from which the upstanding section 17 rises. The fuel is forced upwardly past the elbow to the delivery end of the conduit by pressure of the forwardly advancing stream of fuel being conveyed by the screw. 1
A steam nozzle 19 is located immediately above the delivery end of the conduit and at its rearward side, and will deliver a steam blast in the form of one or more jets across,

The casing 12 is preferably provided with an openable section '22, suitably secured, as by a hinge, as shown, and which permits ready access to the chamber or alcove for the purpose of observation or rectification of any irregularity in the fuel delivery.
With this formation of the firebox backhead the repair or replacement of the fuel feeding conduit can be readily made byvremoving the casing 12, and the upstanding the relative sizes of the conduit 17 and section 17 of the conduit may be removed; Its repairs or replacement may be made while a fire is maintained on the grates, and, in a comparatively short time, the necessity for shopping the locomotive for such repairs being avoided.
The size and shape or form of theclosure 11 may be varied, as conditions may require or as necessitated by the desired shape and form of the conduit 14.
The construction illustrated permits the use of the invention with existing locomotives, not requiring the necessity of providing a new backhead and it has the further advantage in the provision of a chamber or alcove formation of the backhead, that can be readily and inexpensively constructed in the railroad shops and by unskilled mechanics.
It is apparent that this invention provides for the introduction of fuel to the firebox through a fuel feeding conduit removed from the space usually occupied by the grate, and therefore, the fuel feeding device does not encroach upon or restrict the grate area of the firebox. The invention further pro- Vides an arragement in which the delivery element of the fuel feeding device is somewhat removed from the zone of intense heat, thereby reducing the maintenance of the device and further protecting the conduit by the introduction of air from without the firebox.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, a firebox provided with a backhead havin an aperture therein and a grate extending forwardly from the backhead, a fuel transfer conduit communicating with the firebox outside of the rear margin of the grate through said aperture in the backhead and delivering upwardly, an external cover separable from the backhead for said aperture ofi'set outwardly to inclose the delivery end of said conduit, and means for scattering the fuel from the conduit over the firebox.
2. In combination, a locomotive having a cab and a firebox provided with a backhead having an aperture therethrough for introduction of fuel to the firebox, an external cover separable from the backhead for said aperture forming a closure between such aperture and the cab of said locomotive, a fuel transfer conduit extending forward below the lower margin of said cover and delivering into the firebox through said aperture and means for scattering fuel from the conduit over the firebed.
3. In combination, a locomotive having a cab and a firebox provided with a backhead having an opening therethrough for the introduction of fuel to the firebox, an external cover separable from the backhead for said opening forming a closure between such opening and the cab of said locomotive, a fuel a backhead having an aperture therethrough,
an external cover separable from the backhead for said aperture, the lower margin of said cover having such contour in relation to said aperture as to provide an entrance the'rethrough for the introduction of fuel by power means to the firebox, said power means comprising a fuel transfer conduit extending forward below the lower margin of said cover and communicating with the firebox through said aperture, and means for scattering fuel delivered by the conduit over the fire.
5. In combination, a firebox provided with a backwall having an aperture through its lower marginal portion, grates extending forwardly from said backhead, an external cover separable from the backhead, and covering the aperture to form an alcove exteriorly to the firebox, a fuel feeding conduit delivering into the alcove, and means for scattering the fuel through said aperture and over the grate in aerial paths.-
6. In combination, a firebox having its backhead apertured, a casing secured to the backhead and covering the aperture to form an alcove exteriorly to the firebox, a fuel conveying conduit delivering into the alcove, and a steam nozzle for directing a distributing blast through the alcove into the firebox.
7. In combination, a firebox having its backhead apertured adjacent its lower margin, a casing secured to the backhead and covering the aperture to form an alcove, a fuel conveying conduit delivering within the alcove, and a steam nozzle for directing a distributing blast through the alcove into the firebox.
8. In combination, a firebox' having its backhead apertured adjacent its lower margin, a casing removably secured to the backhead and covering the aperture to form an alcove, a fuel conveying conduit delivering within the alcove, the end of the conduit being removable, and a steam nozzle for directing a distributing blast through the alcove into the fire box.
