CYRIL RGBERT YOUNG, or LoNnoN, ENGLAND MOVABLE TYPEWBI'EEB SUPPORT OR TABLE Applicationfiled January 10, 1930, Serial No. 419,957, and in Great Britain September 26, 1829.
The present invention relates to improvements in those movable typewriter supports or tables on which the typewriter, calculat ng or like machine can be lowered to a position beneath the table top and thus leave it clear for other purposes when the machine is not in use.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simplified form of this class of table or support which can be manufactured in wood or metal at small cost compared to those typewriter tables of this character now in use.
Briefly stated the present invention comprises a movable typewriter platform or table of the above described "class in which the machine platform is suspended beneath the table top on opposite pairs of eara-llel links and 1s retained in an upward and forward position by supporting means adapted to be moved to the inoperative position to lower the platform by a releasing member operated from the front of the table.
In a preferred construction the supporting means is in the form of a hinged flap attached to its rear edge adapted to lie in the horizontal plane when the said platform is pulled forward to the raised position with the rear edge of the flap resting in engagement with a transverse ledge or bracket, mounted on the rear wall of the table framework. When in this position the hinged flap holds the machine platform in the forward and raised position in the well of the table.
My invention is illustrated by way of er;- ample in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the table with the machine platform in the raised position and a machine resting thereon.
Figure 2 shows a front view of the table on an enlarged scale to Figure 1 with the machine support lowered.
Figure 3 shows a sectional side view on the line A-B of Figure 2.
Figure 4 shows a form of leaf spring.
Figure 5 shows a. detail view of a lifting lever for the flap. I
flap fitted with a Figure 6 shows a rod for lifting the flap and v Figure 7 shows a slotted stay for supportthe table cover. Referring now to the drawings, the table top 1 mounted on the framework 13 is provided with an opening 2 through which the machine projects when in the raised position fittedwith a hinged cover 3 adapted to be closed when the machine platform is in the lowered position. This movable machine alatform 5 suspended on opposite pairs of parallel links 7 respectively pivoted to the side walls 6 of the table directly beneath the table top as shown or directly to the underside of the table top. This swinging platform 5 is adapted to be moved from the position shown in Figures 2 and 3 to the raised position shown in Figure 1 and is supported in this posit-on by a hinged flap 8. This hinged flap 8 carries the weightof the platform with its load when the platform has been raised to a point (previously determined) when the hinged flap (being prevented by a stop fitted on the underside of the table top I from falling forward) falls or pivots backwards to a position on the same plane as the horizontal platform at which position it engages with transverse ledge or brackets 12 on the rear wall of the table framework 13. When the machine platform 5 is in this position the parallel links 7 and the hinged flap 8 hold it rigidly in the raised position against any shocks to which it may be subjected during the use of the machine resting thereon. To allow of convenient handling this swinging platform 5 may be fitted with a cutout finger grip as shown or with a handle.
In order to release the flap from the bracket on the rear wall of the table framework means are provided for lifting it slightly so that it may be unhindered ultimately assume a position at right angles to the plane of the platform and allows the said movable platform to'fall to its lowest position in the Well of the table. In its simplest form the flap may be provided with a button 15 conveniently arranged on the left or right hand side as shown so that to lower the table the user quite naturally pulls the platform slightly ice upwards and forward with his left or. right hand to release the engaging flap and then raises the flap with his left or right hand by the button 15. 7
As shown in Figure 4 the supporting flap 8 may be pushed down against a light spring 26 tending to bring the fiapto a position at right angles to the plane of the platform ghen the weight of the table is taken off the ap. Alternatively, as shown in Figure 5, means may be provided for knocking up this sup porting flap 8 formed by an operating rod 16 mounted in bearings 17 in a side wall of the table frame in a horizontal plane about the plane of the ledge across the rear wall of the said frame. This rod is provided with a turning handle 18 in a convenient position in the front of the table and a cranked arm 19 adapted when the rod is turned to engage under the hinged flap to lift the flap off the transverse" ledge 12 towards a position ultimately at right angles to the plane of the a said movable platform thus allowing said platform to fall to its lowest position in the well of the desk or table.
In another alternative form shown in 'Figare 6 the supporting flap 8 is provided with a a a depending angle-piece 20 adapted to be engaged in order to pivot the fiapupwards by a rod 21 sliding in suitable bearings 22 onthe underside machine platform. The free end of this operating rod projects nearly to'the of use and the platform has been lowered beneath the table top to the position shown in Figures 2' and 3 but particularly it is proposed to employ a hanging cover depending from hinges aifixed to the front edge of the cover, 3 which when the cover is closed hangs in a slightly inclined vertical position in front of the lowered machine which is then full enclosed on all six sides.
' T is cover may also be used as a book rest or copy holder 23 in its open position. The cover when raised depends by hinges from the top edge of the cutout portion of the table top and by means of a small pivoting prop 24 is held forward at an approximate angle of 40 and with the aid of a ledge 25 skirting the lower edge of the hinged book rest supports a book or otherreading matter.
Although I hai e described a hinged flap on the rear edge of the platform co-acting with the opposite pairs of parallel links to hold the platform rigidly in the upward and forward positionit should be understood that alternative formsof supporting means to the position.
hinged flap can be used. For instance a transverse rod may be mounted loosely with a short lifting travel on the'underside of the This rod is provided with said platform. projecting ends respectively engaging in opposite curved channels in the side walls of the framework of the table, corresponding in form with the path of the machine platform when it is moved from its lowest position in the well of the table to the forward raised These curved channels are provided with corresponding recesses near their upper ends adapted to receive the said projecting ends of the loose rod as it drops into reeesses on, reaching that position and thus carrythe machine platform in the raised forward position in the well of the table. These recesses are so positioned that the swinging platform can be instantly released and low ered by the action of first lifting the loose rod clear of the said recesses.
