L. c. GREINER CABINET FOR CALCULATING MACHINES 7 9 n R b J 4 A3 I e Patented Jan. 8, 1924.
UNITED STATES LOUIS C. GREINER, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
CABINET FOR CALCULATING MACHINES.
Application filed September 20, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS C. Gnnrnnn, a citizen ofv the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets for Calculating Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to cabinets for calculating or other keyboard machines, in which the machine is supported on a platform somewhat below the top of the cabinet and is arranged to be covered up when not in use by a movable cover which, when in closed position is continuous with the top of the cabinet, and is so arranged that it maybe swung upward and rearward and dropped into vertical position at the rear of the cabinet, this movement of the movable cover operating to raise the platform carrying the machine into position for convenient operation of the keys of its keyboard. Cabinets embodying this general construction are in general use for typewriting machines and are commonly known as typewriter cabinets. It is the object of my invention to provide a cabinet of this general class which will be simple and strong in construction and will be particularly adapted for use with calculating machines and other keyboard machines which for convenience in use should be brought nearer the operator than is necessary with a typewriting machine and should be inclined forward instead of being on a horizontal plane. A further object of the invention is to provide means by which, when the cabinet is closed, the entrance of dust will be effectively prevented. A further object of the invention is to provide means by which, if desired, the platform carrying the Serial No. 501,911.
Figure 4 is a detail view of the support for;1 the front of the supporting platform, an
Figures 5 and 6 are detail viewsrespectively of the spring for raising the support shown inFigure 4 and the clip for engag- 1ng it.
In the drawings 1 indicates the fixed top of the cabinet here shown as supported on front legs 2 and back legs 3, the legs being connected at their upper ends by front board 4, back board 5 and suitable end boards to form a rigid structure. Towards one end this top 1 is cut away to form a space sufficient in size to receive the calculating machine 6. In this space is mounted the movable cover 7 ,which, when in closed position,
is continuous with the top 1, and the supportis carried and will move it forward so that its front end will project in front of the line of the front of the cabinet, and will also cause the platform to be inclined forward so as to bring its keys into convenient position for use and to enable the paper roll at the back of the machine to be easily seen.
The front board 4 is cut away in line with the space for the movable cover nearly to its lower edge leaving a strip 4 to serve as a support for the front end of the platform 8 when the cabinet is open. The movable cover 7 is provided near its front edge with a depending board 9 which, when the movable cover is in horizontal position fills the space formed by cutting away the front board 4 and rests on the upper edge of the strip 4. At the sides'of the space in which the machine is received are side boards 10 and 11, the upper edges of which form ledges on which the side edges of the movable cover rest when it is in closed position. These side boards are cut away at their rear ends on curves as shown at 12 these curves serving to guide the rear portion of the movable cover as it is forced rearward into the vertical positioni'n which it is shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Extending rearward from thelower edge of the strip 1 and inclined downward towards the rear. is a bottom board 13 extendrear end of this bottom board 13 is hinged,
' by a spring hinge 16, a downwardly opening door 17 the free edge of which, when it is in closed position, abuts against the lower edge of the back board 5. This door serves to close the space between the rear edge of the bottom board and the back board against entrance of dust or insects when the movable cover is in closed position and is adapted to yield to permit the rear end of the movable cover to pass downward between the rear edge of the bottom board and the back board into the position in which it is shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The supporting platform 8 on which the calculating machine is carried, when. the movable cover is in closed position, rests on the bottom board 13 with its projection 15 extending downward through the opening 14, the platform closing this opening against the entrance of dust or insects.
front end rides up on inclines 18 which are provided on the side boards 10 and 11 just inside the strip 4 at the front end of the bottom board onto the upper edge of the strip, and, by the means hereinafter described, is caused to project a substantial distance in front of this strip.
The movement of the platform 8 with the machine carried by it is effected by the movement of the movable cover through levers 21 and links 20. Lever 21 has a fixed pivot 22 on the side board10 (or ll). It is pivoted at one end to the movable cover just inside the board 9, and its other end is connected by link 20 with the rear end of the platform 8.- It is, of course, to be understood that a lever 21 and link 20 is provided at each side of the platform 8. When the cabinet is to be opened, the parts being in the position in which they are shown in Figure 3, the movable cover is raised to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, which swings the levers 21 on their pivots 22 causing the links 20 to begin to push the platform 8 forward. As the movement of the movable cover continues its rear end passes down into the space between the rear edgeof the bottom board and the back board and the levers 21 carry the upper ends of links 20 upward and forward lifting the rear end of the platform to the position shown in Figure 2 and forcing the front end of the platform over the edge of the strip a. The weight of the movable cover, when it is in its rearmost vertical position,
serves to hold the levers 21 in the positionshown in Figure 2 and to hold the rear end of the platform in the position shown.
YVhen the supporting platform is moved forward its The links 20 being, in the position shown,
so nearly in line with the levers 21, any rearward'or downward pressure on the platform is without effect to swing the levers to raise the movable cover.
other thin materialsecured to the under side of the movable cover at its rear edge serve to close the opening between the rear edge of the movablecover and the portion of the top in rear of the space in which the mov able cover is arranged, when the cabinet is closed. A handle 27 on theboard 9 serves as a hand hold in movingthe cover. The
projection 15 in the platform serves'as a weight to cause the rear end of the platform to drop readily when the movable c-over'is drawn. forward from the position in which it is shown in Figures 1 and 2 and tends to counter-balance the effect due to the forward inclination of the machine on the platform. The forward curved edge of this pro j ection 15 serves in cooperation with the front end of the opening 1 1 in the bottom:
If it is desired to have the machine-on'a horizontal instead. of aforwardly inclined.
base, the devices shown in Figures 1, 5 and 6 may be used. Theseconsist of a u shaped support 30 having the ends 31 of its legsoutwardly extended to form pintles having,
bearings in blocks 32 secured to the bottom.
board at its front end just inside the strip 4. This support, when the cabinet is closed,
rests on the bottom. board as shown in Figure 3. The platform is provided on its under side with a spring 33 adapted when.
which position it sustains the front end of:
the platform at the same level at which its rear end is sustained by the levers 21 and links 21.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In a cabinet for keyboard machines, the combination of a cover arranged to be movable from forward horizontal position to rearward vertical position, a supporting platform for the keyboard machine having a downwardly extending projection on its under side, a fixed bottom board adapted to receive and support the supporting platform in its rearward position having an opening therein to receive said downwardly extending projection, means 0 rated by the cover for moving the supporting platform bodily forward on the bottom 'board, raising its rear end and sustaining it in raised position, comprising levers having fixed pivots between their ends and having pivoted connection at one end with the forward end of the cover and links pivoted at one end to the free end of a lever and at the other end pivoted to the rear end of the supporting platform, and means for sustaining the front end of the supporting platform, the
downwardly extending projection, on the 15 means near the front edge of the bottom 20 board for supporting the front edge of the supporting platform above the front board.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
LOUIS C. GREINER.
