This invention relates to a device for use in store windows, show cases, and other similar display spaces.
The general object of our invention is to provide an attractive and inexpensive device for use in connection with goods displayed in such windows and-show cases for the purpose of enhancing the attractiveness of the goods displayed. More particularly, our object is the provision of a transparent container for supporting suchdecorative devices as may be used in the decoration of such Window or show case. To this end our invention consists in the combinations hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the appended drawings.
In the drawings: i
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a device embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of portions of the structure shown in Fig. 1,
Figs. 3 and 4; are fragmentary views showing modified structures, and
Fig. 5 illustrates the transparent covering of the device.
For the purpose of this description, let it be assumed that the structure of our invention is to be install-ed within the show case where edibles are displayed such as meat, fish, and all such articles that do not possess, within themselves, any artistic qualities. In such exhibits, it has been found good business practice to add trimming of a more artistic nature. This was first accomplished by placing rows of artificial plants or colored paper simulating vegetables and the like between the pieces of meat displayed, but such decorations, although very attractive, have been condemned as unsanitary and their use discontinued.
At present, the decorative trimming mostly used is parsley, water-cress, or other similar fresh, green vegetables. Such trimming is not only attractive and artistic, but also, while the vegetables remain fresh, entirely wholesome. The objection to this type of trimming is partly that it is expensive, and also that it very quickly becomes wilted and commences to decay, necessitating its frequent replacement.
The structure hereinafter described is designed to retain the artistic qualities of the vegetable trimming above referred to, to be of a permanent nature and not perishable as such vegetables are, and to be wholesome, sanitary, and acceptable to the food inspection departments of the various communities.
The structure of Fig. 1 comprises a base 1 to which is attached a transparent cover 2. For the purpose of mounting this cover, the base is shown made with side flanges 3 and 4 for engagement by clips 5 and 6 of the cover. The base is preferably made from thin, non-rusting and non-corroding sheet material, and it is provided, at or near the middle, with two vertical flanges 7 and 8 terminating in a downwardly directed fold 9. In the space between the flanges 7 and 8 is shown seated a support 10 for the decorative material ll. This material may be made from colored paper to resemble the fresh vegetables above referred to, and the support 10 may consist merely of two strips of paper or cardboard between which the material is held in position by means of paste, glue, or the like. The base should be made from sufliciently resilient material to hold the support 10 firmly in place.
The device of Fig. l is, on account of the limited space within the drawings, shown very short, but it is to be understood that it may be made of any length. Its size will depend entirely upon the display space and the size of the goods to be displayed. Ordinarily it would perhaps be a good deal smaller than here shown. The flat'base is made to rest directly on the bottom of the show case, and the containers of our invention are designed to be placed lengthwise and crosswise to divide the show space into compartments within which to place the pieces of meat or other goods to be exhibited. It frequently happens, however, that the goods displayed are held in boxes or trays suitably arranged on the bottom of the show case. As such trays generally are placed close together, no room may be found for placing the containers between the boxes. In order to accommodate the device to displays of this character, we provide a folded strip 15 of metal or other suitable material ice for insertion from below, between the flanges 7 and 8 as indicated in Fig. 1. 'This stri forms a lip or tongue which may be seate between the adjoining sides of the display trays to hold the container firmly in position. The structure of Fig. 3 differs from the foregoing merely in directing the base flanges outwardly instead of upwardly Where a broader container is found desirable?" In fact the flanges 3 and 4 may be directed at any angle required to form the coveri2- into the shape found most desirable. I i The cover itself is in Fig. 5 shown to cone sist of a strip of transparent material such as celluloid, the edges of which are fi'rm'ly held in the folds of the clips 5 and 6. His possible, of course, to form the base 16, as
shown in Fig. 4, with a folded flange to form aclip-for the insertion of the cover 18 In this case, the latter may consist merely of a plain piece of celluloid, the edges of which are ressed into the clips of the base.
e reserve the right to make further modifications of the device so long as such modifications remain within the scope of the following claims.
We claim 1. In a display container, a sheet metal base bent up to provide side flanges and an intermediategrooved flange for frictionally supporting decorative material, and a transparentcover mountable on said base, the
, edgesof the cover'and the flanges of the base being shaped for frictional interengagement I yieldingly to maintain the cover in position on the base 2. A display container comprising a base made with parallel side flanges, and a transparentcover seatable insaid flanges, the said base being madewith a grooved portion intermediate' said flanges for supporting decorative material. y
3. A display container comprising a base made from resilient sheet material formed with parallel side flanges, a piece of transparent material, and resilient clips fastened to-th'e edges of said material for engagementwith the said base flanges, the said transparent material forming a vaulted cover for the base,,the latter being formed interme-- .diate. said flanges with a verticalgrooved flange for supporting decorative materialpositioned within the said cover.
4:. A display container comprising abasemade from thin, resilient material and formed with parallel side flanges, the material of the base being formed intermediate with the said flanges with a vertically directed triple fold, a transparent cover pr o- I vide'd along its side edges with clips for e11- gaging the saidsideflangesof the base, a- U-shaped tongue insertable from'below into theouter grooves of saidtriple fold, the center groove of the said'fold being adapted to support suitable decorative material within the said cover. 7
5. A display container comprising a base made from resilient material, a transparent cover seatable on the side edges of said base,
a tongue downwardly directed from the base for insertiori'betwe'en display trays, the base being made above said tongue with a groove adaptedto support display material within the said cover. I a
into the base intermediate with, said flanges,
the base being grooved abovethe said tongue to support decorative material within the.
vaulted cover formed by curving said transparent material, 7. In a display container, a sheet metal base bent up'to, provide side flanges and an intermediate grooved flange for frictionally supporting (lGCOIfltlVB. material rising from the base, and a transparent cover mountable on the base around saidv decorative material, the edges of said cover and the base flanges being shaped for frictional interengagement yieldingly to maintain the cover in position FREDERICK J.
