Description
n. MOWEN. FLY-BRUSH.
Pafenbed. 1360.5. 1876.
N- FEIQS. FHOTDTUTHDGRAPHERL WASHINGTONv D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT v OFFICE.
DANIEL H. MOWEN, OF GREENOASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLY-BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,042. dated December 5, 1876; applicationfiled October 23, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL H. MOW'EN, of Greencastle, in the county of Franklin and I State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Fly-Brush, of which the follow ing is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a top view of the brush-arm and shaft.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in the arrangement of a vertical shaft carrying a horizontal brushwhich is provided with a screw, a, by which it may be attached to a table, chair, or other suitable object. B is a vertical rocking shaft, that is journaled in the clamp A, and is cut away at one side for a short distance at the upper end. D is a block, that is bored to receive the shaft B, and mortised transversely to receive the brush-arm O, which is squared and notched at b 11, forming a series of wedges, which, being drawn against the fiat side of the shaft B, bind the arm 0 and block D firmly to the said shaft, so that they move with it. The length of the arm 0 is adjusted by changing notches bin the block D. The brush 0, attached to the arm 0, may be made from paper or other suitable material.
E is a lever, that is hinged to the clamp A at d, and connected, by a link, a, with an arm, f, that is attached to the. vertical shaft B. The. clamp A is chambered out to receive a spring, g, that is attached to the shaft B, for returning it to its normal position after being moved.
The clamp A- is secured to the table by means'of the screw a, and the brush is operated by pressing the knee against the lever E. A slight movement of the knee is sufficient to create motion in the brush 0, which will effectually drive the flies from the table.
Having thus described my invention, [claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the clamp A, vertical shaft B, spring 9, arm f, lever E, link 0, and brush-arm O, substantially as shown and described.
2. The arm G,'having the notches b, in combination with the block D and shaft B, substantially as shown and described.
' DANIEL H. MOWEN.
