These, andy such other objects as may hereinafter appear, are obtained by the novel construction, vunique arrangement and improved combination of the several elements which are combined in the invention, a. single embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which.:
Fi re 1 is a plan view of a blank which may e used for producing one of the devices herein described;
Figure 2 is an elevation of a box formed from the blank shown in Figure 1, parts being in section to illustrate the manner of foldigure 3 is a section on the line 3--3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a section at right angles thereto and on the line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view of a modified blank for forming half of a side member; and
Figure 6 is a similar view of a modified blank for forming the other half of said side member.-
Like reference characters are used to designate similar parts in the drawings and in the description of the invention which follows.
. In said blank, which may be of cardboard or other suitable material, there is a generally rectangular 'section 10y which forms the front of the finished'box, the base portion having a U-shaped slot at each side, the slots to be hereinafter later described. At each side of the front section 10 are the ends 11 of the box articulated therefrom by scoring, and appended to ends 11 are compartment walls 12.
iao. serial No. 457,668.
To compartment walls 12 which form a part of the back of the box depend compartment partitions 13. These are each of the depth of the box and walls 12 may be one half the width of the back of the box.
Each of the several sections described is separated from the other by parallel scores, there being six parallel scores upon the blank whereby to provide the front thereof, the ends of the box, and two walls of the two compartments provided therein.
The top of the device is formed from a section 14 articulated from section 10, and from said section 14, and at each side thereof, are wings 15.
At the outer side of said section 14 is a section 16 which formsone half of the outside wall of the back of the box which back is normally two laminations deep throughout. Depending from section 10 at the bottom thereof is a section 17 which has wings 18 at each side thereof, the material of the front 10, ends 11, and compartment walls 12 being cut away to provide intermediate the sections 10, 1l and 12, and section 17 with wings 18 an elliptical slot 30, part of which has heretofore been mentioned.
From 17 depends a section 19 which cooperates with section 16 to form theouter Wall of the back of the device. In section 17 and at opposite sides thereof are two U-shaped slots 31, the purpose of which will later appear.
In the assembly ofthe box by articulation of the blank, scores being provided between all of the sections to provide for ready folding, the sections 10 and 14 are brought to a right angle, the wings 15 being articulated inwardly to a right angle in respect to section 14. Thereafter the ends 11 are folded relatively to section 10 and adhesively secured towings 15. Section 12 and section 13 are folded inwardly at right angles, the abuttingA walls of section 13 generally being adhesively secured one to another.
Two compartments within the box are thus obtained with a reinforced wall therebetween. The ends-of the device are alsofdouble walled thereof.
Next, the'wings 18 are folded upon the bottom 17 and adhesively applied thereto. Thereafterthe section or bottom 17 is folded to a right angle to the member 10, and following this the members 16 and 19 are brought in contact with the outer walls of .sections 12 and adhesively secured thereto,
and .to one another at their edges, thus completing the vassembly of the box and, providing two compartments.
Each of the compartments has a mouth 32 formed by the registration of the material about the slots and 31, the edges of slot 31 registering with the edges of slot 30 in order that an opening will be provided permitting the bottom package of ,a series stacked in either compartment tobe drawn therefrom by gripping the-package between thethumb and one of the fingers.
A box of the type described may be. filled with packages anterior to complete assembly or thereafter, as desired. When 'loaded with package merchandise, the device may be sealed about the mouths 32 thereof4 either by a sliding sleeve, bywrapping materialhor in any other suitable manier until the device is delivered to a retail store where it is to be used. In such retail store, the mouths 32 are cleared of any obstruction used during shipping, and thereafter the device is kept on display in a vertical position resting4 upon the bottom 17. Clerks or customers may pull from either mouth 32 thereof, as desired, packages one at a time until the two compartments are emptied of the packaged mervchandise contained in stacked relation in the two vertical parts of said box.
Thus, a neat dispensing carton or container is provided from the blank shown 1n F1gure 1 in which there are two or more stacks of merchandise, and from which package merchandise may be conveniently drawn one package at a time. provides a highly effective dlspensing system for merchandise, and deters `shop l1ft1ng. Forming as it does, a dispensing de vlce, the petty thief is not interested in a-devlce from which he can draw but one package at a time,
and prefers to take a handfulv of packages,
if he is going to pilfer at all.
Such a device because of its handlness insures that it will be placed upon the counter for self service, this making it a display device, and in this respect, it possesses an advantage over the conventional carton which is used only for storage purposes and 1s normally kept out of view.
The size of the vertical compartments may be changed by shortening the width of the partition walls 12. The partitions 13 will remain the same width and reach to the wall 10 but the partitions 13 are then not contiguous and hence are not glued together. The carton will be sturdy, however, for the flaps 16 and 17 will engage the walls 12 and Such an arrangement be adhesively secured thereto. This permits a quick change in the deviceto meet changes in the size o packages dispensed therefrom without disturbing the external walls which are generaly printed and lithographed. This means that no new printing plates are needed when there is a change in package size. 'Ordinarily, a package change means a'total destruction of all cartons.
The arrangement of the device in respect to i portions of section 160 and 190, corresponding to sections 16 and 19 of the first illustrated form of the invention.
In Figure 5, the side blank 16() is shown.
Therein is disposed two angular slots having two sections, 161 and 162.
In Figure 6, a modified form of side blank 19, designated 190, is employed. This section comprises two wings 191 and 192 at each side and which are separated by notches. Intermediate wings 192 is a centrally disposed notch 193.
In the assembly of the device, each wing is adapted to be forced into a slot comprislng sections 161 and 162, the inter-locking of said wings within said slots bein facilitated by the notch 193 intermediate wings 192 so that there is no necessity to dama gly deform the material of 190 in order to orce the wings 192 into the slot sections 161 and 162. Lateral play between opposite wings 192 is thus possible in the assembling operation.
Locking of parts 160 and 190 normally will maintain thel whole device in correctly assembled relation.
of merchandise, and comprising a sheet of material articulated to provide a plurality of vertically parallel sections, each section having a discharge opening extending across one side -thereof and into the front and back thereof.
2. A carton suitable for the counter dispensing of merchandise, and comprising a sheet of material articulated to provide a plurality 'of vertical parallel sections, each section having a discharge opening in three planes, one of which planes extends entirely across one side of. each section, the other planes being normal to said first mentioned p ane. y
3. A blank of sheet material havin a main body for forming the front and wit extensions at the edges thereof for forming the sides, top, bottom and back of a carton, the extensions of material from said main bod comprising the sides of the carton being d1- vided by scores into4 three portions one of which portions forms a part of the back of the carton and another'a part of a. dividing portion, there being a slot extendinwvholly across the side forming portion an partly lo I, across the main bodyr and the back forming portions, the bottom and topforming extensions depending from said main body and having opposed lateral wings, the wings on the top forming extensions each being of a length equal in width to the major transverse dimension of the carton and the wings on the bottom forming extensions'each belng of a length equal to one half of the major transverse dimension of the carton, the material of said top and bottom forming lextensions beyond sald wings being of the same width as the carton and one half lits height and forming a part of the back of the carton, that portion of the extension forming part of lower portion of said back having opposed slots complemental to the lslots in said main -body when said blank is folded, whereby the resulting carton has two separated sections to hold merchandise, each section with a, discharge opening equal to the width of the carton and extending into thematerial at the front and back thereof and has two laminations of material at the back, in the dividing partition therein, and on the bottom.
