This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for purifying condensing smoke discharged from smelters, industrial furnaces and the like and aims to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted to be placed in communication with the discharge end of the furnace smoke stack so as to purify the smoke and for condensing the same to a certain extent resulting in the saving of valuable by-products that become lost when the entire volume of smoke is permitted to escape in the atmosphere.
Other objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same comprising the novel form, combi nation, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views: 7
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device,
Figure 2 is a detail horizontal section through the upper end thereof and taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a detail horizontal section taken upon the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal sec tion through the upper end of the outermost type of the smoke coil.
Now having particular reference to the drawings my novel invention consists of a smoke coil 5 consisting of three or more vertically extending and communicating pipes one end of the coil adapted to be arranged in communication with the smoke stack, said coil providing a circuitous pathway for the smoke travelling therethrough.
Arranged within the upper ends of the two outermost pipe sections of the coil are water distributing coils 66 having communication with a source of water supply, said water being projected through said coils by suitable pressure pump 7. Arranged horizontally within the communicating lower ends of the outermost section of said coil and a perforated plate 8 through which the condensed products reclaimed from the smoke. will pass together with the water being dis-"" 9 charged through the coils 6-6.
Leading from this portion of the coil is a discharge pipe 9 having communication with a suitable slime tank 10 which in-turn come, municates with a top side of a settling" tank 11. v
Arranged over an opening in the innermost section of the coil adjacent its upper end is a semi-circular band casing 12 jour-v naled through the inner side of which is a shaft 13 that carries a fanunit 14, this shaft. is adapted to be driven in any suitable man- 7 ner so as to cause a forced draft upwardly through the innermost section of the coil to pr ciject the smoke outwardly through said co1 1 Obviously the smoke passing through the coil will become charged with water being discharged from the coils 66 causing oer-l tain elements within the smoke to condense 0 within the coil, the condensation passing into the slime tank and in the settling tank as just mentioned. That portion of the smoke that does not condense will become purified due'to I, the action of the water and when discharging fromithe coil will commingle with the air without polluting the same.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a novel, simple and useful smoke purifying and condensing apparatus and even though I 1 have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of certain details of structural elements it is nevertheless to be under stood that minor changes may be made therein without affecting the spirit and scopeof the appended claim. p
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is: p
A smoke purifying device comprising a vertically arranged smoke'conducting pipe? a U-shaped pipe, an inverted U-shaped tubu lar part connecting the upper end of the first mentionedpipe with the upper end of one of the limbs of the U-shaped pipe, a fan project-.
ing into the'upper part of the vertical pipe for forcing the smoke from the vertical pipe through the inverted u-shapedmember into theupper end of said limb of the U-shaped pipe, the second limb of the U-shaped pipe extending above the top of the inverted U- shaped member and acting as a dischargefor the smoke, a spray device in the upper part of each limbof the U-shaped pipe, means for conducting Water to said spray device, a screen in the bight of the U-shaped pipe; and
a discharge pipe connected-with the bottom N part of the'bight of said U-shaped pipe.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. OLIVER LAMB
