Patented Mar. 15, 1932 New. mi a orties ERNEST L. SMITH, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR 'T0 RING-LETTE PERMA- NENT COMPANY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA APPARATUS FOR USE IN CONNECTION WITH HAIR CUR-LING- AND WAVING- DEVICES .Application filed April 2,
This invention relates to improvements in hair curling and waving apparatus ot that type illustrated in my co-pending application, Serial Number 286,809, iiled J une 20th,
1928, and application-Hair curling apparatus, iiled by me on the th day orP March, 1929, Serial Number 344,256.
The particular novelty in the present invention resides in the construction of a hand carrying case designed to aii'ord a resistance panel compartment of such design that an inexperienced operator will be enabled to readily determine the correct current flow for the number ot' curling units in use.
A further object is to provide safety devices within the resistance circuit which will automatically operate to protect the customer from shock or injury due to excess temperature; another object is to provide a i 'i novel form of case, wherein the instruments and elements employed by the operator may be carried when not in use, making the apparatus self-contained, ready for attachment to a source or" electricity at any time the wav- .5 ing units are in position, and the operator is ready to form the curl.
l/Vith the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion', size and minor details ot construction with- 5 in the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrilicing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more clearly comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a plurality of curlers, arranged in operative position on the head, connected in series, with the conductor wires connected at the 5 proper point in the resistance box for the number of curlers employed.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view on line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corre- 1929. Serial .'LTo. 352,026.
sponding parts, the numerals 1 and 1 indicate complementary container members substantially oblong in plan, and their upper peripheral edges being inwardly flanged at 2 to afford strength to the respective sections. The container sections are hinged at 3 along correspondin(y adjacent edges and retaining members l on the respective sections cooperate with the sections which swing to closed position to afford retaining' means for holding the sections in closed position. A handle 5 serves as a means for transporting the apparatus.
rlhe container' section 1 is adapted to be closed by a sliding closure member 6 operating in grooves 7 beneath the langed edge 2 thereof, and the closure member is adapted for opening and closing movement by reciprocation longitudinally from one end of the container section 1.
top lugs 8 coact with the flange 2 of the opposing' container section when the sections are closed to prevent the withdrawal of the cover or closure member 6 from the section 1.
`Within the container section 1 is positioned a flanged trame 9, its lower edge resting on the bottom wall of the container section and its upper anged edge extending inwardly circumterentially of the container section at a distance below its top edge, as at 10. The side wall of the container section 1 and the side wall of the member 9 are -formed with registering vents 11 which permit the heat to pass from the container 1, and the upper flanged wall'l() is also vented at 12.
Closing the apertures in the frame 9 is a panel board 13 of balielite or other insulating material, it being held in position by screws or other fastening devices 1e.
Disposed transversely of the container section 1, beneath the panel board 13, are insulating supporting cores 15 having wound thereon resistances 16, the resistances being arranged in series, as indicated in Fig. 1. The series of resistances are provided at points between adjacent resistances with tap switches 17 accessible through apertures 18 in the panel board 13, the apertures being consecutively numbered from one end of the series toward the other, and at the end of the series of resistances is located a fuse 19 and a lamp When in use, the operator aiixes the number of curling units desired onto the head of the customer, the units being of the-type set Jforth and 'described in my application filed on the 5th day of March, 1929 and eutitled-Hair curling apparatus; connects the units in series, asat A, and from one end of the series plugs a lead-in B into the tap switch marked corresponding to the number of units employed. The other end of the series of units (lead C) connects with a source of current, as does the lead D, which taps into tap switch 21 at the endof the series of resistances. The capacity of the resistances between leads B and D is suiiicient to reduce the current'low through the curling device to insure heating to the proper temperature, it being understood that the greater the number of curling units employed the lesser number of resistancesV are included between leads B and D. l v i Y 25 Y The container section' 1 aii'ords a receptacle for the curlingunits and accessories employed in the treatment of the hair, and the parts are precluded from accidentally falling out of the section by the cover 6, the latter also 1M precluding contact between the accessories and the face of the panel board 13.
I claim Y In a. hair curling and waving device having a plurality of curler members connected 2&5 in series andeach provided witha heating element and removable contacts Jfor intake and outlet of electric current, a rheostat comprising a plurality of resistance units having substantially similar capacity and mounted 4 in spaced parallel relation and connected in Y n Y series at their ends by an electrical conduit,
a tap switch in each of said conduitsintermediate ends of resistanceunits connected thereby, a `non-conducting plate overlying if] said resistance units provided with openings A in communication with Veach of said tap switches'and adapted to receive therein a contact member, and an electric circuit adapted to connect one end of saidseries of curlers Vto a source of electrical energy, and the other endV of said series of curlers to a source of electrical energy through said rer sistances. i Y Y 5 In testimony whereof I have signed my Y 1" name to this specification.
