This invention relates to copying or trans-- fer sets having carbon sheets included therein to form unitary devices.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described having original and copy sheets together with carbon sheets detachably interconnected in an improved manner.
Another object is the provision of an improved unit including a top face element and one or more associated elements positioned thereunder with one or more interposed members for transferring or facilitating the transfer of an indicia from the top to a lower element, and wherein the members for effecting the transfer are readily removable from the unit, or all parts of the latter separable in any desired order and preferably without mutilation of the elements,
Other objects of the invention reside in the provision of an improved means for detachably connecting a carbon sheet or the like; an improved construction of a carbon sheet, or the like; an improved unit having relatively few and simple parts, and which is inexpensive to manufacture, and convenient, expeditions, reliable and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects and advantages of the incation proceeds.
With the aforesaid objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described in, their preferred embodiments, pointed out in the subjoined claims, and il lustrated on the annexed drawings, wherein like parts are designated by the same reference characters throughout the several views.

Generally described, the invention provides an improved copying unit which can be vention will become apparent as the specifi-' quickly, easily handled and which may include an original and one or more copy sheets together with carbon or equivalent means for bringing about a suitable transfer. of indicia from the original to the copy sheets. This unit may be embodied in widely varying forms and constructions and for many different purposes. While the original and copy sheets may be in the nature of printed forms, they may also be otherwise prepared, or may even be blank. The unit may be inserted into a typewriter or other machine, but the indioia may also be formed or impressed by hand. While the material of which the'unit consists may be paper, other materials may i also be employed according to the required purposes and uses of the invention. In the preferred use of the device, it is contemplated that after the unit has been withdrawn from the typewriter, the carbon sheets shall be removed all together and in a single operation. The original and copy sheets may be coincidentally separated, or subsequently detached from one another, in any suitable manner but preferably without mutilation of said sheets, or requiring any act other than the separation itself. Thus the original and copy sheets may be detachably interconnected along one portionor edge, but without connection with the carbon sheets, and there being a separate line of detachable interconnection'between the carbon sheets and any or all of the other sheets. These lines of interconnection may be of substantially equal Strength but preferably the latter is weaker than the former. The lines of connection may be in any suitable relation or proximity but are preferably suitably spaced or remote from each other. The line of connection between the original and copy sheets may include any desired fastenings such as clips, adhesive, or the like, while the line of connection for. the carbon sheets may include similar detachable fastenings, but preferably small spaced points of connection which may include adhesive, or perforations forming connecting burr like portions, or otherwise creating a thin easily detachable line of engagement. Where a carbon sheet is used'and attached as above men- 0 tioned, it is desirable that the connected por- \m tion of the carbon sheet shall be suitably treated or caused to be free of carbon and oleaginous material which may tend to hinder the connection, and if perforations be used, might cause slipping and accidental release of the engaging burr like portions.
The advantages of the invention as here outlined are best realized when all of its features and instrumentalities are combined in one and the same structure, but, useful devices may be produced embodying less than the whole.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, that the same may be incorporated in several different constructions. The accompanying drawings, therefore, are submitted merely as showing the preferred exemplification'of the invention.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 10 denotes a device embodying the invention. The same may include an original sheet 11 and one or more copy sheets 12 of any desired relative form or size, and preferably coextensive as shown. These sheets 11 and 12 may have similar ruled lines thereon if desired. interposed between said sheets, there may be provided transfer means such as one or more carbon sheets 13, which may for distinction, be shown slightly thicker than the other sheets. These carbon sheets may terminate at 14: in spaced relation to the upper edge 15 of the original and copy sheets, and may have any other or all its remaining edges in coincidence with those of the sheets 11, 12. For instance all side edges of the sheets 11, 12, 13 may coincide at 16, and at the bottom at 17, except that a suitable cutout may be pro-- vided in the original and copy sheets, at some practical point, asat 18, at which the carbon sheets may project as at 19 to afiord a finger grip. At the top 15 of the unit, there maybe provided a detachable binding or fastening 20, which may interconnect the original and copy sheets, but without engaging the carbon sheets that are spaced therefrom. The fastening 20 may preferably be of a type such as is commonly used for connecting together the sheets of a pad of paper, and consisting of a fabric of loose mesh with a filling of adhesive material that engages the sheets of paper.
Spaced from the fastening 20, and preferably-formed along an edge of the unit as, for instance, along the bottom edge 17, IS a cooperating detachable fastening 21 which serves particularly to connect the carbon sheets 13 in place. This fastening 21 may, preferably include a line of perforations pressed through the sheets of the unit so that the burr like projections'formed in perforating will interconnect the sheets. The carbon sheets may have an edge portion 22 free. of carbon or oleaginous matter, the perforations tion readily giving being formed through this portion. Hence the perforated connection cannot become accidentally loosened as by a lubricant action. Any number of sheets may be held together in this manner. It will now be seen that the invention includes coacting detachable fasteners, one of which holds all the sheets together, and the other holds only the original and copy sheets together. Due to thespacing of the fasteners, all the sheets are reliably separably held in a unit. Furthermore, the fastening 21 may be considerably weaker than the fastening 20. However, the sheets 11, 12 which closely enibrace the carbon sheets therebetween, aid the fastening 21 for removably securing the carbon sheets, and the fastening 20 in proximity to the carbon sheets also affords an aid. Hence the entire device may be readily handled and manipulated as a unit.
This invention may be inexpensively constructed, as by first forming the sheets 11, 12 and interconnecting the same at 20. Then the carbon sheets 13 may be inserted, and the line of perforations 21 formed, completing the unit.
In operation, the device may be inserted into a typewriter, and withdrawn therefrom in a unitary form. Then the portion 19 of the carbon sheets may be grasped, and in a single movement, all the carbon sheets may be withdrawn the perforated line of connecway under the pull, so as to leave only the sheets 11 and 12 together. The latter may then be detached from each other. The carbon sheets may be discarded. The original and copy sheets will be free of any mutilation, especially at the headings thereof, and the line of small perforations being remote from the heading will be insignificantand W111 not detract from the appearance of the sheets. It will be appreciated that various changes and modifications may be made in the device as shown in the drawings, and that the same is submitted in an illustrative and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the invention being defined in the following claims.
It will be understood that perforations of many different sizes and shapes may be used, and without limiting myself thereto, I have found that perforations of one thirty-second of an inch in diameter or slightly less are amply satisfactory.
Removal of the carbon sheets, altogether, may be effected by fingers as shown at F.
I claim:
1. A device including an original sheet, a copy sheet, a carbon sheet therebetween, and means for detachably interconnecting said sheets including a fastening means for interconnecting the carbon sheet to the other sheets, and a second fastening means for indil sheets being a second fastener terconnecting the original and copy sheets independently of the carbon sheet.
In a device having an original sheet, a copy sheet, and a carbon sheet interposed therebetween, the combination of means for detachably interconnecting all the sheets, and other means remote therefrom for detachably interconnecting the original and copy sheets alone.
3. In a device having an ori inal sheet, a copy sheet, a carbon sheet there etween, and means spaced from the carbon sheet and deachably interconnecting the original and copy sheets, supplemental means for detachably interconnecting the carbon sheet to the original and copy sheet independently of the first mentioned means.
4. A device including an original sheet, a copy sheet, a carbon sheet therebetween, said all detachably interconnected along one line and the original and copy sheets alone being detachably interconnected along a line spaced from the first line.
5. In a device having an original sheet, a copy sheet, and a carbon sheet therebetween, of means for detachably interconnecting said sheets including a fastening between the carbon sheet and certain of the other sheets, and for interconnecting the original and copy sheets alone, the second fastener being stronger than the first fastener.
6. The combination with a device havin an original sheet, acopy sheet, and a carbon sheet therebetween, of a line of registerin perforations through the sheets for detachably interconnecting the same, said perforations having burr-like into holding engagement in other perforations, and a second line of a detachable fastening including an adhesive interconnecting the original and copy sheets alon In a device having an original sheet, a copy sheet, and a carbon sheet therebetween, the combination of a detachable fastening in terconnecting the sheets along one edge there i 1 of, and a second means detachably intercom meeting the original and copy sheets aione along another edge of the device, the second means being stronger than the first mentioned means.
8. In a device having an original sheetaa on sheet therebetween, the combination of, registering perforations through the sheets, the perforations having burr like projections extending into perforations registering therewith for detachably interconnecting the sheets, a cut out in the original and copy sheets, said carbon sheet projecting through said out out, and a second detachable fastening interconnecting the original and copy sheets alone.

10. In a device having an original sheet, a copy sheet, and a carbon sheet therebetween,

terconnecting certain of the sheets including a detachable fastener at one edge portion of the device, and a second detachable fastener at another edge portionof the device, the second fastener having registering perforations incertain of the sheets, and one of the sheets aving projecting edge portions at certain of its perforations, said projecting portions being engaged with the remaining sheets in perforations thereof registering with the first mentioned perforations.
11. In a device having an original sheet, a copy sheet and a carbon sheet therebetween, the combination of a means for detachably interconnecting the original and copy sheets independently of the carbon sheet, and a sec ond means for detachably f interconnectin the carbon sheet to certain of the secondmeans including a plurality of spaced detachable interconnecting portions 2; so constructed as to release the carbon sheet on exerting a pull thereon in the plane of the g carbon sheet.
