while yet not allowing the collected flowers to pass therethrough, the latter being blcwn out through the tube 22. This vane cr gate 28 i may be controlled by a suitable lever 29, which I the 'machine to direct the flowers or plants between the elbows 27 and between the lower portions 7 of the box-like casings 6. These guides 30 are provided with vertical slots 31 therein for receiving and through which the elbows 27 extend, and are adjustably mounted for different elevations.
Disposed ineach of the elbows 27 is a fanshaped spray nozzle 32 adapted to spray the fluid insecticide onto the flowers or planit-s as the machine passes along a row, which fluid is supplied through a pipe 33 from a tanl: 34 mounted upon the box-lilce casing 6. The supply of insecticide is controlled by means of a valvev 35 regulated hy a control lever 36 which also extends to a point within convenient reach of the operator. i
Mounted on the inner sidesof the lower sections7 of the casings are oil pans 37 which contain a suitable poison or insecticide to receive and destroy the insects. 'These pans 37 are open at the top but suitable screens 38 eXtend over the same to prevent the fiowersfrom falling into the pans. Guides 39' are- Secured at the :forward sides of the lower portion's 7 to dir'ect'the flowers or plants between the oil pans 37.
The machine is drawn along the row and so ,as to' straddle the row of cotton stalks or plants, either by self-propelled mechanism or otherwise, and the cotton stalks are directed V by the guides 30 first between the elbows 27, .Wherethey are sprayed with an insecticide through thenozzles 32 and the air discharged from the fans through said elbows. Further movement of the machine causes the stalks to be guided by the guides 39 between the oil pans37 and at least some of the boll weevils or insects fall from the plants into the pans through the screens 38.
The flowers or portionsof the cotton or stalks that have become'dislodged and have 'fallen to the ground are collect'ed by the col-' i lectors ll and the suction created therein by 'the fans and drawn through the fans and the 3 tubes 22 and, discharged into the receptacles' 24:,fromjwhere they may be removed' for destruction either by burning or otherwise. The force of the fans also acts through the baffles 28 and the elbows 27 to enhance the' spraying action of the insecticide from the nozzles 32, which insecticide is supplied from the tanks 34, the supply being regulated by the valves 35 and levers 36, from within con` venient reach of the operator.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a collection receptacle, a suction device for dischargng into said receptacle, collecting tubes communicating with the suction of said suction device, said collection tubes being telescopically and slidably connected together, resilient means nor v the suction 'of said suction device,-said collection tubes being telescopically and slidably 'connected together, means for normallytending to move the collection tubes together, and means for sliding one of the tubes outwardly 'of the other. v
3. In a machine of the character described,

i 5.- Ina machine of the 'character described, the combination of a frame, enclosed casings disposed on opposite sides' of said frame and in spaced relation to straddle a rowof cotton stalks and the like, each of said casings having a] depending lower portion, a partition disposed in and separating the lower and'upper portions of said casing', a` receptacle removablymounted in thelower portion, a fan cas:
ingmounted in the upper portion and hav-` ing a discharge tube'extending through the partition to discharge into the receptacle, discharge elbows extending'downwardly from the? fan casings and dischargingin opposed rel'ation, means for adjustin'gthe'point of dis-* charge of said elbows, an insecticide spray nozzle disposed within the discharge end of each elbow, and a source of supply communicating with said nozzle.
6. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, enclosed casings disposed on opposite sides of said frame and in spaced relation to straddle a row of cotton stalks and the like, each of said casings having a depending lower portion, a partition disposed in and separating the lower and upper portions ofsaid casing, a receptacle removably mounted in the lower portion, a fan casing nounted in the upper portion and having a discharge tube extending through the partition to discharge into the receptacle, discharge elbows extending downwardly from the fan casings and discharging in opposed relation, means for adjusting the point of discharge of said elboWs, an insecticide spray nozzle disposed within the discharge end of each elboW, a source of supply communicating with said nozzle, a conduit communicating with the suction side of each fan casing, and a collecting device communicat ing with each conduit and having tubular members telescopically connected together, means normally tending to move said members together, and means for moving one of the members downwardly of the other.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a wheeled frame, suction mechanism mounted thereon, and one or more tubular gathering units communicating with the suction mechanism, and having telescoping sections, resilient means normally tending to move the gathering end sections of said sections upward, and stirrups connected with said last-mentioned sections for nanually moving the same downward.
8.` In a machine of the character described, the combination of a wheeled frame, a boX- like casing Inounted thereon, and having an enclosed upper portion and an eXtended lower portion, a perforated partition separating said upper and lower portions to permit fumes to pass ofl? from the lower portion, suction mechanism connected with the casing, and means for ventilating the upper portion of the casing.
9. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a wheeled frame, a boxlike casing mountecl thereon, and having an enclosed upper portion and an extended lower portion to catch material, a perforated partition separating said upper and lower por-- tions and permitting fumes to pass through the perforations from the lower to the upper portions, means for ventilating the upper portion, and suction mechanism mounted in the upper portion and having a discharge nozzle extending through the partition.
