The invention relates to drop-pit jacks. The objects of the invention are to provide; a single-screw jack whi-ch is adapted more particularly for lighter work in repair shops, such as the removal ofthe tender-wheels, car-axles, and the like; a single-screw jack with simple mechanism, including anelectric motor for operating the screw; a screw jack of this type which is adapted to `operate in a comparatively shallow pit; and a singlescrew jack in which the lower end of the lifting screw is efficientlyV protected against the entry of water which sometimes 'accumulates in the bottom of the pit, and is guided to prevent 'cramping of the screw. Other objects of the invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

rlhe jack which forms the subject matter of the invention is mounted on a wheeled truck in a pit and is adapted for use in connection with a shop having a track which extends over the pit and permits railway rolling stock needing wheel or axle repair to be brought into position over the jack,
so that the axles and wheels to be repaired by the jack.v The pit, as ilof the track on the shopfloor and is below the track level. The track on the floor comprises fixed rail sections a laid in the floor a3 of the shop and on sleepers a and pit-bridging sectionsy a? which are pivotally supported as they may-be swung into bridgingposition or transversely thereto to clear the pit so an axle with its wheels can be lowered.V Each of the rail-sections L? is fixed on a beam a4 which is `pivotally mounted on a vertical bracket a5, being connected thereto by a vertical pivot-rod c which extends vertically through lugs at the top and bottom of said bracket. A brace-rod a7 extends between the lower end of the pivot rod a and the central portion of the beam at, and a brace-rod a8 extends between the central portion of brace a7 and the upper end of the rod a6. Stop plates a and alo are secured to the rail-sections a2 and rails a respectively to align the said sections and rails. This construction permits each of the rail-sections a2 to be swung into position to bridge the rails a or transversely thereto to clear the pit below the track.' A work-pit b in the fioor extends longitudinally of the track, so that workmen can inspect or work on parts underneath the rolling stock. The transfer pit c intersects the working pit b, and is provided with rails c laid on sleepers c2 which are secured on the bottomvwall 03 of the pit c, and these rails form a track for wheeled truck D which carries the screw-jack for raising and lowering the axle wheels.
The truck D comprises a frame composed of longitudinal channelled side-beams Z and channelled cross-beams CZ at the ends of, and rigidly secured to, the side-beams by plates d2. Carrying wheels Z3 are adapted to run on the rails c and are secured to axlescl1r which are mounted in bearings Z5 fixed to the sid-e beams d. These wheels are disposed inwardly of the side beams. A platform d, preferably of wood, is laid and secured on strips (Z7, so that the workmen may conveniently walk on the truck and across the transverse pit, and so that parts may be laid thereon and transported along the pit.
A pair of transverse channel beams e are secured by angle plates e to the side beams (Z of the truck-frame to support the liftingscrew and its operating gearing. The lifting mechanism comprises a. single, vertical, bodily movable screw g, the upper end of which is provided with a fork or bracket g for engaging an axle. The lower en'd of the screw is fixed by a pin g2 to a collar or head g3, which is held against rotation to secure the screw against rotation. A gear housing, composed of upper and lower sections f and f, bears on the top flanges of, extends between, and is fixed-to, the beams e, and the the combination of a floor track, a pit intersecting the track, a wheeled truck movable to traverse the pit crosswis-e of the track, a single vertically movable lifting-screw mounted on and centrally of the truck and provided with means at its upper end for receiving a load, gearing on the truck for raising and lowering the screw, a motor stationarily mounted on the truck and connected to operate said gearing, and means at the lower' end of the screw for holding it against rotation.
2. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a floor track, a pit intersecting the track, a wheeled truck movable to traverse the pit crosswise of the track, a single vertically movable lifting screw mounted on and centrally of the truck and provided with means at its upper end for receiving a load, gearing on the truck for raising and lowering the screw comprising a worm gear on the screw and a worm engaging said gear, an electric motor mounted on the truck and connected to operate said gearing, and means for holding the screw against rotation.
3. In apparatus of the character described, th-e combination of a floor track, a pit interse-cting the track, a wheeled truck movable to traverse the pit and crosswise of the track, a single vertically movable lifting screw mounted on and centrally of the truck and provided with means at its upper `end for engaging a load, gearing on the truck for raising and lowering the screw, an electric motor stationarily mounted on the truck connected to operate said gearing, a head on the lower end of the screw, and a housing depending from the truck and in which the head travels.
4. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a Hoor track, a pit intersecting the track, a wheeled truck movable to traverse the pit crosswise of the track, a single vertically movable lifting screw mounted on and centrally of the truck and provided with means at its upper end for engaging a load, gearing on the truck for raising and lowering the screw, an electric motor stationarily mounted on the truck and connected to operate said gearing, and slidably mounted means depending from the truck for guiding the lower'end of the screw.
5. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a floor track, a pit intersecting the track, a wheeled truck movable to traverse the pit crosswise of the track, a single vertically movable lifting screw mounted on and centrally of the truck and provided with means at its u ner end for enga-rinnr l o o c a load, gearing on the truck for raising and lowering the screw, an electric motor stationarily mounted on the truck and connected to operate said gearing, and a housing depending from the truck and provided with a vertical rotation.
6.a In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a door track, a pit intersecting the track, a wheeled truck movable to traverse the pit crosswise of the track, a single vertically movable lifting 'screw mounted on and centrally of the truck and provided with means at its upper end for engaging a load,gearing on the truck for raising and lowering the screw, a motor stationarily mounted on the truck and'connected to operate said gearing, and means depending from the truck for guiding the lower end of the screw and holding it against rotation.
7. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a floor track, a pit intersecting the track, a wheeled truck movable to traverse the pit crosswise of the track, a single vertically movable lifting screw mounted on and centrally of the truck and provided with means at its upper end for engaging a. load, gea-ring on the truck for raising and lowering the screw, an electric motor mounted on the truck and connected to operate said gearing, a head on the lower end of the screw, a rigid housing depending from the truck, and vertical Guides in the housing interlitting said head.
8. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a ioor track, a pit intersecting the track, a wheeled truck movable to traverse the pit crosswise of the track, a single vertically movable non-rotatable lifting screw mounted on and centrally of the truck and provided with means at its upper end for engaging a load, transverse beams on the truck, a gear-case mounted on the beams, gearing in said case, for raising and lowering said screw,vand an electric motor mounted on the truck and connected to operate said gearing.
9. In apparatus of the character described, the combination ofa Hoor track, a pit intersecting the track, a wheeled truck movable to traverse the pit crosswise of the track, a single vertically movable non-rotatable lifting screw mounted on andy centrally of the truck and provided with means at its upper end for engaging a load, transverse beams on the truck, a gear case mounted on the beams, gearing in said case for raising and lowering said screw, an electric motor mounte ed on the truck and connected to operate said gearing, and a housing depending from said beams in which the lower end of the screw travels.
