This invention relates to a handle adapted to be attached to and removed from handleless containers whereby such articlesl may be given an added usefulness.
An object of the invention is to provide aI handle of the class described which is adjustable to containers of varying shapes and wall thicknesses.
Another object is to provide such a device which is non-removable and non-slipping when in position.
. Another object is to provide such a handle Vwhich is simple in use and in construction.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein and set forth in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an isometric view of a handle of this invention positioned upon a container.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the cam plate forming a part of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig` 3 is a side elevational view of a modihed form of handle in position, parts of the container being broken away.
Fig. t is a view on line 1- 4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an isometric view of another modified` form of the invention, with part broken away.
The device of the present invention is useful upon any vessel upon which it may be de sirable temporarily to attach a handle. It is particularly useful as an article of camp equipment since emptied tins may, by its use, be utilized for drinking, cooking, etc. ln this connection it might be pointed out that the f later type of can opener provides a smooth,
rounded and beaded edge upon opening of the tin, so that the uses above suggested are quite practicable. It is' a tin opened in this fashion which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The handles of this invention are preferably formed of metal strips. The handle 8, in Fig. 1, comprises the upper, substantially straight portion 9 terminating in a downward hook portion 10 disposed at substantially right angles thereto. The lower end 11 of handle 8 is given a slight outward bend. The
handle portion intermediate the ends is curved in the usual way to provide for convenient gripping. Portion 9 is perforated as 1930. serial No. 460,230-
at 12 for loosely receiving a threaded bolt 13 having the knurled head 14, with, preferably, a contact shoulder 14:0 therebeneath. A cam plate 15 is disposed beneath portion 9 and threadedly receives bolt 13. Plate 15 may be 55 of the same width as handle 8, is substantially rectangular and has a cut corner 16 at its front end. The threaded perforation 17 is1 disposed somewhat forwardly of the center. lnv positioning the handle, lplate 15 is turned 60 so as to extend transversely of portion 9, with the cut corner 16 disposed adjacent the tin. The hook 10 is placed over the beaded edge 18 and in abutment with the inner face of the tin. Plate l'ma'y then be conveniently 65 turned with the forefinger so as to bring the edge 19 of the plate'into contact against the outside face ofthe tin directly beneath the bead 18. Cut corner 16 permits the necessary clearance for this pivotal movement. In this position thefrear edge 2O of the plate contacts the curved'portion of handle 8, as indicated at 200. Turningl of threaded bolt 13 results in firm binding of plate 15 against the tin and the handle. v-The handle is removed by the reverse process. lt should be noted that edge 19 of plate 15, by advancement of bolt 13, is drawn upwardlyv into binding relationshipL against head 18, and that the lower end 11 of the handle comes into firm contact with the lower face of the can when the handle is positioned. The relation of plate 15`with the adjacent portions of the handle makes possible a wide range of adjustment to varying types and thicknesses of containers.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the curve of the handle is carried up higher and a. straight vertical section 21 is provided adjacent the upper end. Said end is cut longitudinally so as to provide a pair of tongues 9o 22 and 23 in the same plane as section 21, and an inwardly bent intermediate tongue 24 in spaced relationship with tongues 22 and 23. The lower portion of tongue 2d is threadedly perforated to receive the threaded bolt 25. The bifurcated end thus formed is adapted to engage the top edge of a container with tongues 22 and 23 abutting the inner face of the tin and lying upon opposite sides of the usual seam 26, and the tongue 24 abutting 100 L2YY i Y 1,848,649
the outer face of bead 18. The bolt 25 is advanced to contact the tin directly beneath bead 18, for securing the handle in position. The association oftongues 22 and 23 with 5 seaml 26 precludes lateral movement of the handle. l
The modication 30 shown in Fig. 5 is similar'- in form? tothe'. device?, jnstl described. In this modification, the central tongue 27 is 10 straight and the lateral tongues 28 and 29 are bent forwardly at their"` poi-ntsoi juncture With the handle. Tongue 27 is likewise provided with tightening bolt 25. Thebentpor-l tions of tongues 28 and 29 contact the top 15 of beaded edge 18 andtl'etighteningof boit Y 25 against: the llower edge of said. beadresults in a rigid'positiloning ofthehandldrendering unnecessary the association of' the. handle With avertical seanfnras` is desirable. 20 in Y'the modification previously described., V Similar.A modifications, coming Within, thev spirit of thisv invention, Will `become appar.-V ent `upon. consideration of the disclosures: herein.
