Description
March J. M. DAVIDSON 1,848,515
- WIRE SECURING CLIP 4 Filed May 2, 1928 Patented Mar. 8, 1932 JOHN M. DAVIDSON, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA WIRE snconme CLIP Application filed May 2, 1928. Serial No. 274,656.
This invention relates to a new and improved wire securing clip, and more particularly to a clip of the type adapted for use in securing fence wires to metallic fence posts.
'Metallic fence posts are coming into general use and with such posts there is the necessity for clips or similar devices for securing the wires to the post. Short lengths of wire have been used for this purpose but require considerable labor for their application and tools for properly twisting the ends together. Other forms of clips have been developed, formed from heavy wire and having ends or prongs which are bent in place by hammering. The posts are light and resilient and it is diliicult to satisfactorily hammer clips in place upon them.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved clip adapted to be easily and quickly put in place without the use of special tools. 7
It is a further object to provide a clip which may readily be manufactured with usual forms of wire working machines.
It is also an object to provide a clip which aflords a firm grip upon the wire being secured.
Other and further objects will appear as the description proceeds.
I have illustrated one preferred form of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of a section of a fence post with my clip securing a wire thereto;
Figure 2 is a view of Figure 1 as seen from the right;
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a clip with both loops in the unbent position; and
Figure 5 is a View similar to Figure 4 but with one securing loop bent to the securing position.
The form of fence post shown in Figures 1 to 3 forms no part of the present invention and is merely shown for the purpose of illustrating the application of my improved clip. The clip may be used with other forms of metal posts, and may also be used with concrete or wooden posts.
The post shown has the rear portion 11, the side portions 12 and the serrated edges 13. The wire 14 has'been shown as resting between two serrations against the edges 13.
My improved clip comprises the body por tion 15, the side arms 16 and the securing loops 17. The ends 18 of the loops are bent around the main portion of the wire to afiord a strong construction. The present device therefore results in a clip having a body portion and arm portions which are straight and which lie in the same plane, with securlng loops depending from the arm por- 86 tions at substantially right angles thereto. The clip may be made in the form shown in Figure 4 with both loops extending downwardly or in the form shown in Figure 5 with one loop bent in hook formation.
The form of Figure 4 is applied by placing the wire against the front of the post, placing the hook against the back of the post and moving it downwardly until the loops 17 engage the wire. lVith the clip properly sized and the loops inclining inwardly slightly, the resilience of the clip will-hold the clip and wire in place. To make a permanent connection, each loop 17 is then bent around the wire to the position clearly shown in F igwe 2. This may be readily accomplished by inserting a pointed tool into the loop which may be easily and quickly bent around the W1I8.
The form of construction shown in Figure 5 is applied in a generally similar manner. The reversely bent loop is first hooked over the wire, the clip swung around behind the post and the other loop hooked over the wire. The second loop is then bent around the wire. The first loop may be left as it is or may be tightened up against the wire.
The loop ends on the clips afford a ready purchase for any pointed tool so that the clips may be readily and quickly bent to securing position. These loops also afford a firm and positive double grip upon the fence wire. The holding strain is divided between the two wires and there is much less possibility of the connection Working loose than a With an old type of single tie wire. While I have shown one form of construction by Way of illustration, my invention is a capable of modification for use with diflI'erf ent types of posts and to meet varying coni i shend som mplate su h sheng s and ifie fisi s es soee th n the spirit nd scope of the appended claims. 10 I claim:
1. A Wire attaching etip a' b'ody ortion, a Wire engaging hook carriedat one end of the body portion, and a closed wire engaging loop portion ooaypied at the other 15 end of the body, said loop portion being b n ble by mee wi-e to l ins r ed within the loop to foirn a hook, j p
