The hub portion 28 of the pinion 27 is formed withan upwardly opening noncircular socket or pocket 33 adapted to receive the lower end of a brake staff or other actuating means (not shown). Referring now to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figures 6 9, inclusive,

Brake mechanism -comprising a casting with a depending bracket portion, a pin between said casting and bracket portion, a winding drum and gear rotatably mounted on said pin, a pinion meshing with said gear, a bearing portion integral with said pinion, said casting being formed with an aperture receiving said bearing portion of the pinion when entered from below, and a bottom bearing bracket for said pinion extending between said casting and gear.
4. Brake mechanism comprisinv a base casting, a brake chain winding darum and main gear rotatably mounted in said casting,
f a'pinion meshing with said maing ear, and inrISK tegral hub portlon on said pinion extending upwardly into and rotatably received in said base casting, and "a bottom bearing bracket y:for said pinion connected yto the lower face of said casting above the gear and formed with a supporting Spud extending into the end of the pinion.
5L Brake mechanism comprising a base casting formed` with a depending bracket portion,a pin extending between said casting and bracket portion, a key passing through the lofwer end of said pin and through slots in said bracketportion, and a winding drum and main gear rotatably mounted o'n said pin, the slots in the bracket portion'being so formed that the pin may be removed upon partial removal only'of the key therefrom and rotation of the pin.
