interleaved with clutch 'plates 27 carried by e a rotatable drivingsleeve or spider 28."A Thisl vdrive'sleeve is journaled in ball' bearings29` and 30 suitably supportedv Within the drill" interposed between the adjacent endsof the clutch plate and the bearing 30. Encircling the drive sleeve 28 and slidably mounted thereon is a clutch applying member 32 normally held in clutch applying position by al coil spring 33 encircling the drive sleevel 28 and reacting against a sleeve 34 abutting against an adjustable collar 35 tlirea-dedly connected to the rotatable drive sleeve 28. As
Y 42 for the drilling tool.
As shown, the gear 23 meshes with a spur gear r45 having a different tooth ratio from the gear 24 and rotatably mounted on a bearing sleeve 46. This gear 45 has a sleeve portion which carries clutch plates 47 which are interleaved with clutch plates 48 carried by a drive sleeve or tubular drivemember 49.
` This sleeve member 49 is keyed at 50 to a memberl in turn keyed at 52' to a sleeve or tubular drive member 53, the sleeve 49 being mounted on the member 53. The tubular drive sleeve 53 is journaled in ball bearings 54 and 55 suitably carried within the drill casing. The member 51 is interposed between 'the clutch plates and the bearing 54 and forms a support for the bearing sleeve 46. lAs illustrated the tubular member 53 is provided with a radial flange 56 interposedr between the inner race of thecontiguous ball bearings and a ball thrust bearing 5,7.,l j Slidably mounted on the sleeve 491s a clutch applying member 58 normally held in clutch applying position by a coil spring 59 encircling the sleeve 49 and reacting against a sleeve 60 engaging Van adjustable collar 61,.
threadedly connected to the sleeve 49. The mechanism for releasing the drive clutch 26, 27 and the feed clutch 47, 48 is substantially the same as that kdescribed in the copending application mentioned above and since 'it does not specifically enter into this invention further description 'is deemed unnecesary.
In accordance with this illustrative form l' of the invention the tubular member or drive sleeve 38 has formed thereon at its rear end a feed nut 62 threadedly connected 'to a. .feed screw 63 extending centrally within the driving sleeve 38, this feed screw being adapted to move inwardly and outwardly with respect yto the drive sleeve 38 as will hereinafter be deseribedl Keyed at 64 to a rearward extension 65 formed integral with the feed .screw 63 is a member 66 held in position by a lock nut 67 fthreadedly connected to the extension 65. This member 66 has laterally projecting keys 68 engaging longitudinal flutes or keyways extending throughout a portion of the bore within the drive sleeve 53, as clearly shown in Fig. l. The rear end of the drive sleeve 53 is closed by a cap member 69 against which the rear end of the member 66 is adapted to abut during the feeding operation of the mechanism as will later be described. T his cap member 69 is provided with a recess 70 within which the lock nut 67 is adapted to enter when the feed screw is in its retracted position.
In the operation of the improved drilling mechanism the tubular supporting arm is adjusted in a manner clearly described in the eopending application mentioned above and the drill suitably positioned adjacent the coal face. The operator then inserts the drilling tool 41 within the chuck 39 and then grasps the chuck casing and moves the drilling tool forwardly yuntil the cutting bit engages the coal face, the tubular drive sleeve 38, the feed screw 63, and the member 66 sliding axially relative to thesleeve 28 and tubular member 53. After the drilling tool of the drill is positioned adjacent the coal face, the driving ymotor is started and the'operator then suit;
ably 'manipulates the clutch controlling means thereby moving the clutch members 32 and 58 into released position, the coil springs 33 and 59 automatically applying the clutches. .Since the gear 45 rotates at a speed `slower than the gear 24 the tubular drive member 53together with the feed screw 63 are rotated at a. speed slower than the tubular drive member 38 yand as a result the feed screw 63 is fed slowly rearwardly from the position shown in F ig. 1 until the member 66 engages the cap 69-as shown in Fig. 4. W'hen the member 66 engages this cap axial rearward movement of the feed screw is prevenu ed and consequently, since the tubular drive sleeve 38 rotates at a speed slightly faster ythan the feed screw 63, the feed nut 62 moves axially forwardly relative to the feed. screw thereby feeding the drilling tool into the coal at a relatively slow drilling speed. After the hole is completed or if it is desired to change the drilling tool `the operator releases the clutch applying member 32 while the clutch 47, 48 remains applied.' Resultantly the tubular drive sleeve 53 together with the feed screw 63 arey rotated relative to the then stationary feed nut 62 and consequently the feed screw moves forwardly axially ata relatively high speed from the position shown in Fig. 4to the position shown in Fig. 1. The feed screw andthe tubular drive sleeve 38 thereupon turn together with no axial feeding movement. y The operator then grasps the chuck 39 and manually slides the tubular drive member 38, feed screw 63, and member 66 rearwardly into their initial starting posimissie,
l tion,` these partsy being shoved` rearwardly untiltlie memberv 65 engages the capy 69;'
